A tall, brown haired youth craned his neck over the crowd. His face creased with worry as he searched the dozens of faces for one in particular. He couldn't see the one he wanted and his frown deepened. Danmer had only gotten as far as Selenitas Hold, when the news that the Weyr had been attacked came. Only a few days ago, he had left his only sister Merridan here as a candidate. If anything had happened to her, he would never forgive himself.
Danmer grew impatient. He would never find her at this rate. Cupping his hands, he bellowed over the din of voices. "MERRI!" He paused then called again. "MERRI!" Still nothing. Danmer started to raise his voice a third time, when someone dug into his ribs with their elbow.
He turned to see Merridan, her face red with fury and embarrassment. "Dan you great dunghead!" she scowled. "I told you never to call me that!" Danmer grinned happily. Mer had her left arm in a sling, but she was definitely alive. He ruffled her hair fondly. "Call you what, my darling sister?" he asked playfully. Mer scowled and pushed his hand away. "Call me 'Merri' again and you'll see how 'darling' I am," she challenged.
But her anger did not last. Danmer pulled her into a bear of a hug that Mer found herself helpless to escape. "I'm so glad you're alive, little sister," he whispered. "I don't know what I would have done if..." Mer hugged him tightly back then pulled away with a grin. "You sap. You're not going to cry, are you?" she accused with a chuckle. "You know Bendan Riders stand no chance against me!" Danmer laughed with her. "I guess I worry for nothing then." Mer smiled. Shards, but it was good to see him.
