G'tor trotted back into his room with a bowl full of meat scraps from the kitchen. Star immediately zeroed in on the bowl greedily, but G'tor pulled her away. "None for you," he scolded. "You already stuffed yourself with pie, you greedy monster." Indeed, Star's formally lovely white hide was now blotchy purple, despite all G'tor's efforts to wash it out. Berry juice stained easily and it would probably stay that way for several days, even weeks.
Star crawled up to his shoulder and sulked. If the food was not for her, then why bring it. "It's for your new friend," G'tor explained. He took the small fire lizard egg from his pocket and showed her. The woman had said half a day, so he expected it would hatch any moment now. Ruskeath stuck his head in and eyed the egg curiously.
Are you sure this is wise? he asked. My two small kin do not seem to get along often. He was referring to fire lizards and salamandyrs in general. They didn't exactly go together. G'tor shrugged. "It's too late now." The egg was already rocking in his hand.
Star glared at it. Eggs were for eating. "And how are you going to eat an egg?" G'tor asked with a chuckle. It was easy, Star explained with a series of images. She would crack a hole in the egg and inside was yellow goo. She had seen cooks in the kitchen do this. Then she would crawl inside and slurp up the goo like the berry juice in the pies. It was probably very tasty. G'tor shook his head. "All those salamandyrs working to get out of their eggs and I must have the only one who wants to climb back in! You can't eat this one, Star. It's already hatching."
Cracks ran along the shell and all at once a small, green fire lizard broke free. Maybe she wasn't the prettiest ever, but G'tor was delighted to see she was strong and healthy. Creeling with hunger she latched onto the meat G'tor fed her and he felt her emotions rush into him. Impression had been swift. G'tor grinned. "Aren't you a cute little thing?" he crooned.
The green stopped eating and growled. Then, without warning, she bite him hard on the finger. G'tor yowled, more with surprise than pain. "What was that for?!" The green flicked her tail in annoyance and went back to eating. G'tor stuck his finger in his mouth. "Why you little terror." Ruskeath rumbled with amusement above. "What?" G'tor glared up at him. I told you it was not wise the brown commented dryly.
"Thanks, you're a big help," G'tor returned sarcastically. He looked back at the fire lizard. "What's the matter, little darling? Did I hurt you?" She bit him again. "Alright, alright!" He was going to run out of fingers at this rate. "You're not a darling, you're a beast. Vain too, I shouldn't wonder." Will you call her Beast? Ruskeath asked.
G'tor chuckled. "Tempting, but I'm not that heartless." He thought for a moment, rolling words around in his head. "You're name is Tervain. Is that acceptable, miss beast?" When she didn't bite his hand off, he took that as a good sign. "Tervain then. Welcome to the family. Motley bunch that we are."
