Its another average day and Kalina has found herself in the stable. She seemed to have a knack for showing up at places when people where sick and needed help. Today wasn't different as one of the beast handlers was in bed with the sniffles. So with a bright tune to whistle she had finished mucking the stables and was laying hay for the runners to bed.
"So Uminth, when I get done do you want to fly our route again?" She continued to spread the hay. The grin on her face a clue to her thoughts.
Sure Mine, I love to fly. So why do you like spending so much time with earth bound creatures? By now Uminth only looked into stable instead of entering it. She had gotten too big in past months.
"Well....I guess I'm trying to think of ways to earn some marks. We missed the flitter hatch at lesson time so I figure if I save some marks I can just pick one up later on." Kalina moved further into the stable to work on another stall. "Besides, runners are nice too."

Wyn arrived in time to catch Kalina's comment. She considered the girl carefully for a moment. She was a fine young woman, in Wyn's oppinoin. Anyone who took such care of the stables went far in her book. She was also sorry to hear Kalina had missed the hatching. Wyn had never had an interest in fire lizards herself, but she knew how much young people liked them. Maybe she was just growing soft hearted in her old age, but she decided to help. She never spent her marks on anything anyway.
"Marks, eh?" she questioned, coming in behind Kalina. She hid the fact that she was anything but gruff and practical as she usually was. "I might be able to spare a few, but you'll have to earn them." Without waiting for an answer, she walked to the end of the stables and pointed at the one of the stalls. A young herdbeast, probably hardly a week old, lay in the straw. It was wheezing and coughing and looked quite ill. "This little one here is in a bad way," she explained. "I've done what I can, but she needs constant attention if she's going to survive. If you spell me between your classes and other chores, I'll pay you well for it. I'll take the nights."

Kalina straighten at the unfamiliar voice. She turned to face the speaker, not bothering to pluck a stray piece of straw from her hair. At first she was worried but went the woman mentioned earning marks her face relaxed into the easy going smile that usually sticks to her face. She followed the woman over to a stall. "I've never tended a sick herdbeast but I would be glad to help." Her eyes flickered in concern. The little one seemed so fragile.
KaliMine, its so tiny. Do you think it will survive? Why not eat it and end its misery? Uminth was curious about her rider's thoughts. Because people like to see creatures grow and they help us... plus....I don't like seeing any young thing die.

((OOC: I'm going to try and move this along quickly so that Kalina can get to the caravan before it leaves. ^_^ If I'm going too fast, please let me know!))
Wynmuri nodded, please by her response. "It's not hard," she explained. "Just make sure she's warm n' comfortable. She'll need feedin' every couple hours." She pointed to a supply of fresh milk, honey and herbs. "Just mix 'em up in this bottle here and stick it in her mouth. She should chug it down if she's well enough. Yer dragon can call Jarcith if anything's amiss."
For nearly the next sevenday, the little calf lingered between life and death. Some days it was well enough to stand and beg for milk and others it lay still and refused to eat. Wynmuri was growing exhausted and disheartened. It was starting to look as though the young thing wouldn't make it. Finally, however, it got up and stayed up for two days and even began mooing for it's meals and begging for attention from those who tended it.
At the end of the sevenday, Wyn declared the calf well enough to rejoin the others and beamed thanks at Kalina. She must be exhausted. "Well done!" She passed the girl and handful of marks the counted up to seven. "One for each day," she explained. "You earned them." It was rare for Wyn to give such praise and she rewarded highly when she did.

OOC: You're just fine. Thank you!
Kalina followed Wynmuri's instructions to the letter and as promised she carefully watched over the young calf. It didn't take long for her to become attached and eagerly hoping the little one would make it. Through their link, Uminth learned that hers could form attachment even to prey and as Kalina, and through their link, herself cared for the little thing she learned something more about a human's capacity to care.
When the calf started to moo for milk and show actual improvement Kalina was excited. "We did it!" And she hugged Uminth's neck. She smiled and thanked Wyn for giving her the work and experience. Not only did she now know more about herdbeasts and accomplish something, she felt she may have found a Green Rider that she could become friends with or at least....friendly acquaintances.
