Deceased: Died in Selenitas Earthquake Plot
Humans:
Name: K’nam
Age: Twenty-eight
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Rank: Bronzerider
Birth Month: November
Physical Appearance: K’nam is a rather sturdy looking fellow. He’s got a fair bit of muscle on him from Turns of hard work. His skin is tanned from the sun, and is marred by the odd scar here and there. The most recognizable ones are above his right eyebrow and on the back of his left hand.
K’nam’s face is friendly. He almost always has a comforting smile on his lips and looks relaxed. His eyes are dark brown in color that one would almost swear they were black upon first glance. His hair is slightly lighter in color. The style he wears it in is most often times down, messy and curly. The curls usually reach the very tip of his earlobe, rarely ever exceeding that length. If he attempts to tame it, his hair seems to grow a few inches, and sweeps into his gaze. Seeing that as an annoyance, the taming does not happen often.
K’nam wears whatever he feels like at the time, and, most often, will choose comfort over flash any day of the week. At Gathers or formal events, he doesn’t mind getting dressed up and just sort of shrugs if anyone comments on his appearance.
Personality: Calm, collected, K’nam can be quite hard to read what’s going on inside of him. He doesn’t show a lot of emotion on the outside, and sometimes feels numb on the inside. He is very moral, and doesn’t like breaking his code of conduct for anybody. He has no problems with other people’s limits and does not try and force his high standards onto anybody else.
Before K’nam will accept anybody into his life as more of an acquaintance, he feels that he should see some proof that they are decent humans, and this hard to gain trust can be all too easily lost most times. He doesn’t realize that he analyzes people before he accepts them, but he does it all the same. Drunks, unfaithful partners, and people who want to be with everyone intimately have a much lower chance of ever passing into friendship. This doesn’t keep him from being social, though jokes made will often pass him by without much recognition. He doesn’t mind talking to anyone or being part of a crowd, but will slip off if he suddenly finds things too uncomfortable to him.
When it comes to anyone, he is respectful until they do something disrespectful to anyone else. However, when it comes to women, K’nam takes a lot of pushing to lose his respect for them. He is naturally protective of them, and is not afraid to fight in their stead. That being said, his views are a tad bit sexist, as he doesn’t like to see them doing hard work, and will often offer to do their work instead. If a girl uses him, it is likely that he will notice, but there is a high chance that he won’t act out against her.
History: K’nam was born as Kinam to two Holders in Benden Hold who were irresponsible to say the least. His parents were often drunk, and hardly ever home, usually wandering around the Hold, begging for their next drink. While Kinam’s mother sometimes, on her better days, returned home, his father was hardly ever seen by the lad. By the time he was eight, Kinam was already working what odd jobs he could get, supporting his five younger siblings in place of his father. When the rare Holder cared for their poverty, Kinam’s father would catch word and come home long enough to keep his reputation alive before running off. By the time he was twelve, Kinam was the oldest of seven and more of a father than his ever was.
Thought K’nam demonstrated a slight aptitude in most works that he did, he refused to become an apprentice. Though being a craftsperson would mean being able to escape claws of his life for a while, he could not justify leaving his siblings for his own selfish reasons. At the age of thirteen, Kinam began listening of the outside world, and heard tales of the cruelty of Benden Weyr spoken of with great admiration and fear while Fort Weyr was spoken of with general hate. The more he learned about the dragonriders, the more he came to despise the idea of them. He began noticing little patches of darkness on people’s hearts, and came to hate where he and his siblings lived, and longed to leave, but feared for their safety.
At the age of fifteen, Kinam heard news that didn’t honestly shock him. His parents had been found by Benden riders. Kinam’s father, being a rather large man in stature, had been taken to the Weyr to find permanent work for. His mother, resenting being left alone after so long, had tried to get the riders to take her as well. One of the crueler members of the group that had found a potential worker had pretended to go along with her and, from a great height, let her ‘fly’ to the ground. The news of this had set off some dull receptor in what was left of his father’s brain, and he had attempted to rebel. The bringer of the news spared Kinam the details.
Without anyone to fall back on in severe emergencies, Kinam began working harder, trying to prove to anyone who didn’t know that he was not his parents. At the age of seventeen, he began noticing something bad. His sisters, growing to an age where they could be potential for child-bearing, were receiving odd looks from some of the others. When one man started in on his oldest sister, threatening her, Kinam broke his arm. The man was furious and told the boy that he had been promised the girl from her parents in exchange for a place to rest and wine to drink. Several other claims soon popped up, and Kinam was forced into a corner. Hating himself, he began threatening on his own, ‘clearing up’ the deals his parents had made. He taught the younger boys in his family to fight to protect the girls, and, eventually, the threats and claims backed off by the time Kinam was late into eighteenth Turn.
When he was nineteen, he heard that a clutch at Benden Weyr had been laid, and that riders were going to go out among the people soon to Search for candidates. On Kinam’s twentieth birthday, he faced candidacy or a similar fate to his mother’s. He left his siblings under the care of his sister Naviri who had been starting to try and hold her own work-wise and her in the care of his brothers. At Benden Weyr, he tried to blend in as best he could with the other men, careful not to stand out too much. He highly anticipated being looked over in the upcoming Hatching. However, much to his surprise, a bronze hatchling that called himself Bearinth completed K’nam.
K’nam continued trying to stay low, and kept himself and Bearinth from becoming too noticeable. During their last Weyrling lesson, K’nam and Bearinth vanished between, hoping to be assumed dead. He had intended for him and Bearinth to go to safety at Fort Weyr, but was met with anger as a Benden rider, and they vanished again. Afraid, the young man and dragon sought safety in Selenitas Weyr. Being greeted better here than they expected, K’nam and Bearinth settled into new lives.
Though worried about his family back home, K'nam made no attempts to ressurect himself for his siblings. He left them, heavy hearted, where they were. As Thread began to fall again, he was taken by surprise, but both he and Bearinth adjusted well to the new duty.
As Benden began reentering his life, K'nam got more nervous for Bearinth's sake and the family he left behind, the latter of which he knew was likely irrational. As the horrors played before his eyes, he began to feel anger. He wanted to help his Weyr, his home, no matter what lay at the end of the road.
Dragon:
Name: Bearinth
Color: Bronze
Age: Eight
Physical Appearance: Bearinth is pretty average as far as his size goes. His wingspan is slightly larger than normal, but nothing really to write home about. However, as he grows, Bearinth seems to get larger, but mostly due to the fact that he seems to get slightly more pudgy as the years wear on.
His color is deep, rich. A lighter streak runs down his back, ending on the tip of his nose and on the tip of his tail. It doesn’t blend in to the color beneath, but stands starkly out. Darker patches blend in, the darkest at the bottom of his legs and slowly getting lighter as it goes up. He, like his rider, bears a few scars, one a slash across his face and another on his back right leg.
Personality: Bearinth, when first approached, is usually unlikable. He tends to distrust new encounters due to the first bit of his life, but once he warms up to somebody, Bearinth can be one of the nicest creatures most people could ever meet. He likes talking to other dragons and forcing his K’nam to be social when he’s in a dreary mood.
Bearinth loves contact from his friends, though he doesn’t often show it. In their weyr, Bearinth is not above asking K’nam for hugs or help washing at the lake. He treasures his baths, and loves being clean. He’s not afraid of being dirty; he just loves the feeling of not being dirty.
Bearinth treats everyone, with the exception of his bonded, with equal respect until they lose it. He doesn’t mind being flirted with by females, but will likely not return the favor unless he’s in a particular mood. If he catches anyone trying to show off, he can’t help but try to share some of the spotlight, and praise from anyone will make him the happiest dragon for, at minimum, a few hours.
Salamandyr:
Name: Scamp
Color: Blue
Age: Hatchling
Color code: 00FFFF
Appearance: Vividly electric blue, this salamandyr is eye-shockingly bright, almost enough to leave an after-image on the retina. Fat and squat, his pitifully tiny wings can’t even begin to support his round body in the air, no matter how much he flaps them—which is a lot. His tongue is usually poking out of his mouth just a little, as if he bites the tip constantly, and a rather crazed look usually fills his usually-yellow eyes. Impossible to lose and certain to cause trouble, no matter how much he scampers around (which is quite a lot), this blue salamandyr will always be a round little creature, and large for his color—almost the size of a brown!
Personality: Diagnosis: terminally insane. It’s really the only way to understand this rather crazy salamandyr. Nothing he says will ever make sense, and he learns (and unlearns) words in record time. Never will he have more than three in his repertoire, and they will come and go like fickle lovers. But this blue doesn’t seem to notice the difference, combining and recombining his current words in odd patterns, even making up new words using the old ones. Of course, this will eventually lead to him only remembering his conglomerates, rather than any true words. Prone to running around like an idiot as well as eating everything (especially anything green, which makes life interesting when he gnaws on dragons), this blue might come to an untimely end if his owner isn’t good at getting him out of trouble.
