Deceased: Died in Selenitas Earthquake Plot
Humans:
Name:Holden
Age:18
Gender:Male
Sexual Orientation:Bisexual
Rank:Apprentice Dragonhealer/Candidate
Physical Appearance:Shaggy locks of straw colored hair constantly drape across his eyes, annoying Holden to no end. More often than not he must shake his head in order to maintain some visibility. Intermingled in the yellow strands are shades of a darker, coppery color that catch the sun’s rays quite nicely.
His eyes are a light honey brown in coloration, with even lighter flecks of an almost golden color dancing within the brown irises. They are large, giving him the wide-eyed appearance of a young deer caught in the headlights. This has often worked to his advantage, for who can say no, or accuse such an innocent looking face?
His face is rather long and lean, though not quite gaunt. His nose is on the larger side and rather pointed, while his lips are a size between full and thin. When he smiles, it is apparent that a few of his teeth are somewhat crooked, though this tends to give him a kind of lop-sided goofy charm. Five freckles cross the bridge of his nose, though two of them are fake, drawn on every morning in ink by Holden himself.
Holden has what is known as a swimmer’s physique. Tall, with long arms and long legs, he appears almost gangly on land. While he would look perfectly at home in the water, Holden unfortunately never bothered to learn to swim. His shoulders are broad as well, tapering off to a narrow waist, and while Holden has gained muscle over the years, it is lean muscle, keeping him slender rather than bulky.
Personality:Everyone has a few quirks, something to make them truly unique, and Holden is no exception. In fact, he may have been unfairly doled out a few oddities too many. While most folk are content with washing their hands once, Holden must do it a grand total of five times. In order to reach a destination, his number of steps must be equal to some multiple of five. Every night before he sleeps, he must check under his bed five times to make sure there is nothing lurking in the dark, plump his pillow five times and have exactly five sips of water. In short, Holden is a victim of what is known to be obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Aside from this, he is a relatively normal young man. Except for the mood swings. Oftentimes, Holden will become frustrated over the lack of control that he has over his actions, and it will take only one wrong word to set him off in a violent fit of fury. While he can interact normally with others, he limits his social gatherings to groups of two or three at the most, and even those are far and few between. People distress them with their lack of caring for balance; he hates to see someone carrying something in one hand, but not the other, and it pains him to watch a cook stir the soup three times in a counter-clockwise fashion.
Holden’s obsessions are not merely limited to his actions. His own physical appearance is under constant scrutiny, in particular the three freckles that cross the bridge of his nose. They irk him so much that he has taken to using ink to draw in two more, and he never feels quite comfortable with himself until this task has been accomplished.
When he does find himself in a social situation, Holden is never quite sure how he will behave. Sometimes he will remain quiet for the most part, merely listening to the others speak, other times he will attempt to fit in, speaking in loud and raucous tones and often causing others to look at each other with raised brows.
He finds himself most comfortable in the midst of animals, and so often spends his free time playing with the canines of the weyr, hunting the beaches for a possible fire-lizard companion, or admiring the dragons. It is this that led him to pursue the life of a dragonhealer, for there is something about the creatures that soothes him even when he is at his most agitated.
History:Holden has never known much more than Selenitas Hold, his former home. He was born the youngest in a large family, and by the time he entered the world, his mother was reaching the end of her childbearing years. From a young age he behaved oddly, giving his parents cause to worry. They prayed that it would pass and when it didn’t they simply ignored it, hoping that would solve the problems.
Of course, Holden's problems didn't go away because his parents ignored them. If anything, his obsessive tendencies began to worsen. By the age of five, he was an embarrassment for his family to be seen with, and while his parents tried for a while, with time even they abandoned hope that he would ever be normal. Soon they began to ignore their youngest as well as his abnormalities, deeming it better to make him start fending for himself due to the fact that he wouldn't always have people to care for him. In truth, they simply didn't want to deal with the added stress and trouble that he brought. They weren't unkind, but they weren't loving, and Holden quickly got the hint.
Seeing as his parents didn’t care much for him, Holden found other ways to occupy himself. It was at the age of seven he met the hold's Healer, a reclusive old man who only spoke when it was important, which suited the young boy just fine. The two seemed to have a mutual agreement; Holden wouldn’t pester him with unnecessary talk, and the old Healer would refrain from commenting on Holden’s condition.
For many years their friendship continued in this manner. Soon Holden was only returning to his cothold at night to sleep. The rest of the day was spent in the company of the healer, who had begun to teach him bits and parts about his craft. Eventually Holden was practicing on the hurt animals that he would occasionally find on his explorations for more herbs that the healer might need. He never bothered to apply his craft to people, figuring that was for the healer, and also because he preferred the animals to his own kind.
Eventually, a day came when a search-rider arrived, looking for candidates to stand at Aslath's first clutch and, among others, Holden was chosen to leave. The boy had by then grown into a young man of seventeen. The old healer refused to let Holden stay, knowing that the weyr would offer him a better life than a simple holder ever could.
Once at Selenitas, Holden spent most of his time around the infirmary and though he didn’t wish to practice what he knew on people, he enjoyed watching, storing things in the back of his mind for later use. It was there that he discovered Kalierre, and overheard her discussing dragonhealing. The idea immediately appealed to him and it wasn’t long before he approached Kali with the proposition of becoming her apprentice, all thoughts of the hatching forgotten.
The day of the hatching of Aslath's clutch came, which happened to fall on the young man's eighteenth nameday as well. While most would be disappointed at failing to impress on their own nameday, Holden suffered very little if at all, far more interested in the fact that he would have plenty of time to continue bettering his healing skills.
