Deceased: Died in Selenitas Earthquake Plot
Name: Qirewen
Age: 15
Gender: Female
Sexual orientation: Bisexual
Rank: Apprentice healer
Appearance:
Qirewen's petite, with a wiry build. She never puts on very much weight, though she's got a decent amount of muscle definition from hard work that strengthened her arms and shoulders. Her short black hair just reaches past her ears. She doesn't pay much attention to it except to keep the bangs out of her eyes. Her eyes are her most attractive feature, being large and a shade of dark blue that's almost black.
She has a tan from a lot of time spent outdoors, and she's strong for her size and age. Style is not one of her strong points; she tends to wear trousers and tunics in red and brown, her favorite colors. (They don't show dirt or stains as much as fancier clothing.) [/b]
Personality:
She's very intelligent, and strong-willed. If she sets herself to do something, she *will* find a way to make it happen, even if it hurts her. It's a desire to learn, rather than compassion, that motivates her. She loves her studies as a Healer because they fascinate and challenge her, and they're useful, not out of any warm fuzzies/wish to save the world. She'll do her best at it, because she wants to BE the best. Patients may find her somewhat lacking in "bedside manner", understandably.
The few close friends she has, know her as the sort who'll stick with them, no matter how ugly or even dangerous a situation might become. "Unflinching" is a good adjective for her. She's not easy to get to know; quiet, and self-contained. People who've just met her may think that she's shy. In truth, she's not all that trusting of strangers, particularly those who are older or outrank her.
She has a cynical streak that tends to make her think that they want something from her. She doesn't have a problem with that, per se, it's when they won't "admit" it that she gets a bit wary and suspicious. She doesn't often let herself care about friends more than casually, though she's capable of it. Qirewen's more likely to respected, than liked or popular, among her peers.
Her sense of humor tends to be a bit on the dry/mildly sarcastic side.
History:
Qirewen grew up at a Smithing cothold in Hyphen Hold. Her father was a Smithcrafter, her mother a local cotholder. She was one of four children born to them.
They weren't spoiled, but not mistreated either. Their parents saw that their children were fed, clothed, cared for, even when they might not be so well off themselves.
Qirewen's younger sister, and one of her brothers, died when very young, due to an unknown fever that left everyone in the family ill and weakened for days. Her mother and father were overcome with grief, and their surviving children lost a great deal of their innocent optimism as a result.
When she was nine turns old, her mother left her family and moved out of the area. Qirewen had to help take on responsibility for her younger siblings. Her father was kind, but a bit of a traditionalist, thinking of raising children/tending hold as a woman's job. He later remarried, but after several turns.
Even as an adolescent, Qirewen had no desire to win a young man's heart. Flirting tended to elicit blank looks, or scorn. Boys her age were, to her mind, more like "walking hormones" than her idea of company.
Qirewen continued until she was of age to go into apprenticeship as a Healer. Her father agreed after some discussion with his new wife, Qirewen's stepmother. Qirewen's stepmother was younger than his first wife, and not "traditionalist" in terms of gender roles. Seeing that Qirewen was quick-witted and motivated, she encouraged her stepdaughter to follow her dreams.
She thrived there. Here, at the Crafthall, were problems she could actually fix. She discovered that she had a seeming aptitude for the work. People here respected intelligence, and curiosity, rather than beauty or compliant behavior.
She wasn't shy of asking questions, or observing Healers at work. The teachers noted that she had a detachment unusual for a girl her age, and the ability to switch 'tracks' mentally from casual situations to dealing with a crisis, without missing a beat.
She did sometimes feel attraction to her fellow apprentices, but she would have walked out in a Threadfall before she'd admit it. Especially, when she sometimes felt drawn to other girls at the Hall instead of boys. That was one little fact no one would hear from her, not if she could help it.
Some three and a half Turns later, a search rider came to the Healers' hall. His dragon reacted strongly to Qirewen. Her decision to accept being Searched surprised a few of her peers, but nonetheless, she was determined to go.
