Deceased: Died in Selenitas Earthquake Plot
Humans:
Name: Kayla
Age: 17 Turns
Gender: Female
Sexual Orientation: Hetero
Rank: Dragon Candidate
Physical Appearance: Kayla is fairly petite; she stands at about 5’3” and has a boy-ish body shape with the slightest hint of feminine curves. She is slim, and as such she has thin limbs with not a huge amount of obvious muscle or mass to them. Kayla isn’t overly bony, in the sense that her bones don’t jut out all over the place – but you can see the outline of her collarbone, and the bones in her hands and feet are really quite noticeable when she flexes them. This is often why she wears gloves when there is no apparent need to do so.
To make up for her boy-like appearance, Kayla has grown her hair to roughly waist length. It is dark brown which develops a few blonde streaks when she is in the sun. She likes to leave free and flowing whenever she can, which isn’t very often since she became a candidate. So when she is working, it is put into a long plait down her back and tied with a piece of leather cord. On formal occasions, Kayla leaves most of her down with a thin braid on either side of her face, and a slightly thicker one running down the back of her head.
Her face is one most people would consider pretty, but nothing remarkable. There is a subtle elegance to her features, which is usually betrayed by her less-than-graceful attitude. She has a small delicate nose, which is subject to a few freckles in the summer, and well defined cheekbones. Her lips are slightly plump with a good shape to the Cupid’s bow, and they are a pale raspberry colour. Her muddy-brown eyes are well rounded and slightly on the larger size.
Personality: Blunt and to the point. That is Kayla to a tee. She doesn’t like to beat about the bush; if she’s got something to say, she’ll say it. Likewise she doesn’t sugar coat criticisms, which often makes her seem harsh to people who don’t really know how she is. While she doesn’t appreciate the manipulations and twisting of words many people use in politics, she can see through the rubbish and see what people are actually saying – regardless of the spin they are trying to put on it.
She isn’t so fickle as to care much about how people see her – she is who she is, and she’s never going to change that for anyone. So if people can’t accept her for who she is, she won’t give them her time of day, simple as. However, once Kayla decides she likes someone enough to befriend them, she is a friend for life. She will stand by her friends through thick and thin, and support them through whatever they are going through; her straight talking is often useful in arguments as she tells it how it is, and she can usually see who’s in the right and who’s in the wrong.
Kayla is generally a confident person and it is uncommon for her to feel intimidated by anyone. She is unafraid to interrupt an argument or fight between people she may not even know and try to put it right. She does not consider herself to be a strong leader, but people seem to respect and appreciate her no-nonsense attitude, and this often causes people to see her as some sort of leader.
History: Kayla’s mother is a woman from Selenitas Weyr, no one important or remarkable in anyway – she would find work when and where she could, encouraging her children to do the same when they were old enough. She always puts her family first, and loves them more than anything. Kayla’s father was a dragon rider from Benden Weyr – or so she was told; she never met the man. He left Benden a couple of turns before war of the Northern Weyrs began and came to Selenitas, where he met Kayla’s mother, who fell pregnant with Kayla a matter of weeks before the war broke out. Her father left immediately to support his home Weyr in the war, unaware that he had a daughter on the way. That was the last time her mother saw Kayla’s father; when he didn’t return after a turn, she assumed her had either died or forgotten her, and so she moved on with her life.
When Kayla was 18 months old, her mother married a man from Selenitas, and her family continued to grow. Her step-father was a great man, and he helped take care of Kayla as if she were his own child. As she was so very young when he became a part of her life, she saw him as her father. By the time Kayla was 9, she had 4 half-brothers – 1, 3, 4 and 6 turns old – and 2 half-sisters – 5 turns old and 6 months old. So for a while Kayla was in charge of the kids while her mother was working; this may have caused her to become the no-nonsense girl she is today, as she always had to break up fights between her half-siblings.
That was the turn the Thread returned to Pern. She has heard of this silver-grey stuff that fell from the skies in stories as a child. But that’s all she thought they were; stories. She was just old enough to realise that the world was changing around her – her younger siblings weren’t quite old enough to understand what was happening, so they just accepted it. In the stories, dragon riders always came flying to the rescue on their magnificent beasts, destroying Thread before it had a chance to devour the landscape. From that point on, Kayla decided she wanted to be a dragon rider. She wanted to fly into the sky and help save the day.
The coming of Thread sparked other changes in her life; it made her realise that the world thought she knew may not be completely true. It was then that she started to notice difference between herself and her siblings – they had hazel eyes while she had brown, and they had muddy-blonde hair while hers was brown. She asked her mother about this when she was 11 turns old, and was told that her father wasn’t the man who had brought her up. She didn’t resent her mother when she was told the story, she didn’t resent her step-father for assuming the role, and she was left with a sense of longing to know who her father really was. It turned out that he was, in fact, a dragon rider, from Benden. This naturally accelerated Kayla’s dreams of becoming a rider – it was in her blood, and so she may have a greater chance of fulfilling her dream than previously thought.
Whenever a Search was announced, Kayla ran to find the Search rider almost straightaway. She was told she had the potential to Impress on every occasion, but she wasn’t old enough. That didn’t stop her going to the next one. Or the one after that. It eventually came to the point that the riders started to recognise her in the crowds of would-be Candidates, and she was promised that as soon as she was 14 Turns she could become a Candidate. While she knew this, she always came to see the dragons – to marvel at them.
While she waited to finally be allowed the chance to Impress, she worked in the Weyr – kitchen duties, or cleaning; whatever was available. Most of the work she did get involved interacting with plenty of other people, so rumours and news got passed down to her from word of mouth. The fact that she could know bits and pieces of dragon riders’ lives only spurred her on – maybe she could get talked about in the Weyr kitchens, or her name mentioned in passing conversation. Not all the things she heard was good though, like most news and gossip. Sure there were the talks about clutches hatching – Aslath’s of 26 really amazed Kayla; who knew one dragon could lay so many eggs? And the deformed clutch of Fath was another hot topic; so many stories about why the new-hatched dragons were abnormal – tales from drugs to mistreating the eggs.
When she was 13 turns old – just one turn before she could go to the Barracks – the Weyrling massacre and kidnappings occurred. This was the first time Kayla had any doubts about her future; it terrified her that something like that could happen in the supposedly safe Selenitas. She thought the conflicts were all in the North, and had nothing to do with the Southern continent. She was reluctant to see the next Search rider, but was soon convinced that it had been sorted and measures had been taken to ensure nothing like that would happen again. While she was still shaken about it, her eagerness returned and there was no stopping her now. Even the kidnapping of the Weyrwoman, though it horrified the entire Weyr (Kayla included), it didn’t deter her from her dreams – if she wanted to be a dragon rider, she couldn’t let anything scare her off.
Her 14th birthday couldn’t come round quickly enough. Kayla grew impatient for it. And once it did come, her impatience was transferred to waiting for a Search to be announced. When a Search was finally called she sprinted hard to the rider – only to trip on the way and severely sprain her ankle and break a wrist. She was broken hearted. She could finally go off to become a Candidate, and she ruined the chance; it would be another few months before another Search was called.
Once Kayla’s wrist was healed, she ventured out to find the Search rider – a bit more carefully this time. She was immediately told to make her way to the Candidate Barracks, and since becoming a Candidate, she hasn’t looked back. In her first turn in the Barracks, the previously kidnapped Weyrwoman was poisoned and it was a sad day throughout the Weyr – the Candidates even heard her dragon’s mourning screams before she vanished between forever. It caused some of the weaker Candidates to run away – they couldn’t bear the thought of dragons killing themselves. Despite all the horrific events that surrounded the dragon culture of late, Kayla’s hope and determination have remained alive. Through all the Hatchings she has attended and been unsuccessful at, she has remained hopeful. Through watching her friends Impressing and moving on to become Weyrlings, she has remained hopeful. She still believes that she will become a dragon rider. One day.
