Deceased: Died in Selenitas Earthquake Plot
Humans:
Name: Janik
Age: 19
Gender: male
Sexual Orientation: Bisexual. Why choose just one?
Rank: Wher Candidate/JM Smith
Physical Appearance: Janik does not exactly cut an imposing figure. He is short for a man, standing at only 5'4, and he is thin. His size belies his strength, because none of his compact build is wasted--most of him is muscle. His face also has young features, more "cute" than "handsome," complete with dimples when he smiles. His nose is slightly crooked from a break that happened when he was a child. He has freckles across his cheeks and nose. Janik has dark brown eyes and sandy brown hair, which is usually rather scruffy. Clothing is not one of his big interests, so he wears plain, practical garb suitable for a crafter.
Personality: "Plucky" would be a good key word to describe this young man. Overconfident might come next, maybe followed by arrogant. Janik leaps before he looks and there isn't much he won't leap into. He is stubborn and he doesn't like it when things get in his way. Once he sets his mind to something, he'll get it done, even if has to bulldoze through obstacles on the way. Janik isn't a particularly subtle person, either. When he wants something, temper tantrums are more likely than smooth negotiation.
Janik is more of a doer than a thinker. He likes to be on the move and he doesn't deal well with boredom. Usually if he doesn't have anything to do he ends up cooking up mischief, and he has been behind more than his share of pranks. His motto? Better to ask forgiveness later than permission now.
He has two major hobbies. The first, of course, is his craft. Janik specializes in weaponry. He enjoys not only creating swords and daggers but using them as well. Of course, that only extends to practicing swordmanship and throwing daggers, because he's never actually been in combat. His second hobby is more innocent: cooking. He especially likes baking, and he should keep the barracks well stocked with cookies and pies during his time there. Another hobby, or perhaps more of a vice, is gambling. Janik will bet on anything, from horse races to hatchings, and he has a weakness for card games. Dragon poker, anyone?
History: Janik was born in Benden Weyr. He doesn't know anything about his
birth besides that. His father, Laverin, escaped from Benden after his dragon
was killed and took his son with him. They settled in Blossom Hold. He never
told Janik anything more than that, so Janik doesn't know how the escape took
place or why his father's dragon was killed.
Naturally, growing up with a dragonless man as a father was no easy task. Laverin had all the right intentions, but he was no creche mother. Laverin also had frequent flares of temper, fell into depression once every few weeks, and was in his cups more often than not. Some of the women in the Hold helped out, but they were wary of the strangers from Benden. Janik was generally free to run wild as a child, so it's little wonder that he developed the personality he did.
The news of Shmee's Impression was taken in stride, with Janik too young to really understand the implications of the regime change. If Kaegan's arrival seemed to make Laverin uncomfortable for some reason, Janik was too young to understand that either. Of course, the onset of the tenth pass of Thread made a difference in his everyday life. He had to learn the procedures for Threadfall and he also trained with the ground crew to learn how to look for burrows.
With the weyrling massacre and the ensuing kidnapping, a new sense of danger settled over the Hold, and Laverin became more protective of his son. Janik chafed against the new restrictions and broke the rules at every opportunity. Fortunately, his new apprenticeship kept him busy enough that he didn't get into serious trouble. Despite his father's clear disapproval, he was also starting to think about becoming a candidate himself, but he never was Searched.
3011 was a comparatively peaceful turn for the Weyr, despite several leadership changes, and Janik's life was also fairly uneventful. He studied hard in his apprenticeship, got into innocent trouble with his friends, and flirted with whoever caught his eye. Unfortunately the peaceful times didn't last as 3012 ushered in a new batch of dangers for the Weyr. When the Weyr was put under siege, Janik wanted to rush in and help free them, but obviously there was nothing he could really do. He just had to wait and hope until the Weyr was freed. He swore he could hear keens all the way at the Hold, and he spent most of the time trying to keep his father calm.
Hepaticath rose shortly after the siege, and Janik once again hoped to be Searched. And once again, his hopes were dashed. When an unknown Weyr tried to steal one of the eggs, it was clear that the battles were far from over. Fortunately, the clutch was safe and at the Hatching, a dragonrider who had lost his first green Impressed again. Janik had to wonder what that could have meant for his father, but of course Laverin was too old to Impress again. Besides that, his father seemed to be getting even more moody and distant since the siege.
When news of an impending wher clutch reached the Hold, Janik finally decided to act on his own and go to the Weyr as a wher candidate.
