About:
Having survived the Interval and the first Turns of the Pass, the Western Continent now looks to legitimize itself among the other Holds and Weyrs. But the Weyr Council refuses to acknowledge the newly formed Western Weyr, the Holders' Conclave disallows Lordship at Western Hold, and the Western Continent finds himself taking in every woman that Impresses blue.

With a focus on plots – gritty, far-reaching plots and smaller-scale personal plots – Shards of Pern looks to explore the founding of a new Weyr on a Continent previously used as Pern's penal colony. We are a canon site, set at the beginning of the Fifth Pass - the first Pass to follow a Long Interval.

Current IC News: A Hatching. At an ordinary Weyr, a hatching is an extraordinary event, one filled with hope and excitement. New futures will be made, both for newly Impressed riders and recently hatched dragons. At a normal Weyr, Hatchings are a time of joy, of celebration, of hope.

Western is not a normal Weyr.

Western, where at any given time there is only just enough food to ensure that its denizens, both human and dragon, don't starve. Western, where summer is looked forward to with more fervor than can even be mustered in the chilling, frigid High Reaches, for it means that, for a time, they can grow their own crops and hopefully store enough to make the coming winter bearable. Western, where every dragon is more precious than life itself, for the dragons are life itself, the single, scant protection a forgotten, struggling populace has against the depravities of Thread.

Western, where a hatching might mean more death instead of new life.

It's true that recently, Western Searchriders were given permission to seek out Candidates within Igen Weyr territory, but Western Weyr is still woefully lacking the numbers it needs to suit the eggs that junior queen Phediath has so recently laid. And what of the senior queen? Moraeth herself is due to rise soon, which will bring not only a new clutch to Western's sands, but perhaps a new Weyrleader as well... and only time will tell if he will be the kind of leader Western needs to guide it toward a bright, hopeful future.

Current OOC News: Shards of Pern is back! Due to unforeseen circumstances we have had to switch to a new forum, but we fully intend to push ever onward and upward. Not much has changed outside of the location, so if you were intrigued before, we'd be more than happy to have you join us.

Current wanted characters:

- Candidates! We've got a clutch on the sands and need some hopefuls willing to Impress to the hatchlings waiting inside of those eggs. At this time, it is undecided if there will be a queen egg in this clutch, but if there should be a character that warrants one...

- Several ranking positions are open, including Wingleaders, Wingseconds, Weyrlingmaster, and Headwoman. At the moment our Weyrleader position is claimed by an NPC character, but the rank will be opening up the next time the senior queen rises.

Current IC News: Phediath's hatching has come and gone, and somehow, Western was able to scrounge up enough Candidates to Impress to the dragonets that hatched from those eggs. Now comes the arduous task of Weyrling training... and the day to day fears of hunger and starvation. With thirty four ravenously hungry young dragons to feed, the Weyr finds itself hard-pressed to provide for its own, the situation growing more dire by the moment. Things are bound to get worse, for senior queen Moraeth is long overdue for a flight of her own, and the eggs from her clutch will easily double the number of mouths that need feeding.

But after Turns of struggling and hardship, fate has finally tossed them a bone in the form of the recently discovered South Island Hold. An island that was seeded with Ted Tubberman's grubs far back before the Second Crossing, it is a veritable land of plenty when compared to the chilly Western Continent, sporting crops and herds of cattle galore. Unfortunately, the denizens of South Island (including a Wing of dragonriders) are less than pleased that they've been forced into coexistence with Western Weyr, and tensions are mounting between the two factions.

As if to make matters worse, there is Moraeth's impending flight to consider. So far, bronze Tamevith has been the only dragon able to catch her, making M'trin, his rider, Western's Weyrleader. There is little affection between M'trin and Clarra, however, so there's no way to tell how the dice will roll this time. Who will be Western's next Weyrleader? And will it be someone who can properly lead the Weyr into a promising future, or someone who will bring the entire venture crashing down around him?

Current OOC News: Our recent hatching was quite a success! If you happened to miss it, don't worry; we have several Weyrlings up for adoption if you want to claim one. You can also expect a leadership-determining flight in the near future, so if you'd like to play the Weyrleader, now is a good time to jump in!

We also currently have a contest for a transfer Junior Queenrider open. Details can be found on our forum if such a contest intrigues you.

Current wanted characters:

- Bronzeriders, particularly those interested in becoming Weyrleader. Our current Weyrleader is a NPC, and as such he will be replaced in the upcoming flight. We have a couple adoptable bronzeriders available if you'd rather adopt one of them.

- A new Junior Queenrider, as mentioned above. We currently have a contest running for anyone who cares to audition to play a gold at Western Weyr.

- Candidates! Western is always on the lookout for Candidates, so it's never too early to get them in.

Current IC News: Much has happened in little time at Western Weyr. Perhaps most notably is the fact that senior queen Moraeth has risen - and that it was not M'trin's Tamevith who caught her, but the recently transferred T'raev and his Mirkath from Ista Weyr. More interesting to note is the fact that M'trin and Tamevith were not to be found for the flight, and have seemingly disappeared... but to where? There is much gossip on the matter, but few hard facts.

In addition, Junior Weyrwoman Valleny was, much to her displeasure, traded away to Igen Weyr for another queen in order to broaden Western's gene pool. Riza and Maurynneth now call Western their home... again, for Riza, who was born on the frigid continent. Igen Weyr faces some censure from the Weyr Council for the act, but there is little to be done about it now.

Most pressing on the minds of those Candidates who were left standing at Phediath's clutch is the fact that, in three month's time, Moraeth will grace the sands of Western with eggs of her own. Will it be a healthy clutch? Will Mirkath prove himself on that regard? Will there this time be that oh-so coveted golden gleam among the mottled, creamy shells?

Current OOC News: We've a hatching looming on the horizon, with a tentative date set around the end of March or the beginning of April. Of course, this means we're looking for active, well-played Candidate characters to Impress those dragons to. As of yet, it is undecided whether or not there will be a queen egg in this clutch; this will be determined by the presence of a viable character for said queen to Impress to. If you are interested in Impressing to a gold, getting your Candidate in early and keeping her active will go a long way to impressing Staff.

With a leadership flight recently decided, there will likely be a shuffling of the Wings to accommodate changes in rank, which means we may have some positions open up. Now would be an excellent time to join as an adult rider, and there are an assortment of options for their origination, including one of the few who came from South Island Hold.

- Candidates! Male Candidates are especially welcome.

- Adult dragonriders. We have a notable shortage of played adult riders, so any of this character type, particularly chromatics, would be welcome. We have a number of ranking positions open, including Wingseconds.
