Died in southern fever epidemic
Name: Danica
Age: 36
Gender: Female
Sexual Orientation: Homosexual
Rank: Wherhandler
Physical Appearance: Danica could not be described as dainty by any honest observer. Measuring just under six feet in height, her physique contains all the feminine softness of a boulder, and is so packed with hard muscle that it would be nearly impossible to find a soft spot to cuddle up to. This might be for the best, because she is prone to misjudging her own strength and bruising those whom she tries to be affectionate with -and this she tries often, because Dani is not one to shy away from physical contact of any kind. The fine lines around her eyes and mouth speak of a person who is not unfamiliar with hearty laughter, and hint at her friendly and approachable demeanor.
Her hair bleaches easily, and for most of her life it has been an almost startling shade of platinum blonde. However, the nocturnal lifestyle she has adapted to over the years means that the shade she most often wears is a streaky, dirty-blonde. This she always keeps short cropped, because she has neither the ambition nor inclination to care for a longer hairstyle. Her eyes are an even mix of green and brown, with the lighter shade ringing her irises and making them seem greener than they really are. Both her eyelashes and eyebrows are pale, giving her the wide-eyed appearance of a much younger woman.
Dani is not a fan of skirts, though she can be spotted wearing lace and ruffles on special occasions. Her everyday clothing choices are neither masculine nor feminine, but she does play up her breasts whenever possible so as to avoid being mistaken for a sixteen year old boy. She is rather fond of piercings, and currently has a total of eight -two in her left ear, five in her right, and a silver stud in her left nostril- with plans to add more when she gets the chance. Her voice has a distinctively rough quality to it, and while it is often raised she does not usually do so in anger.
Personality: Anyone who fancies themself modest or proper would wise to avoid Dani’s company. With a love for wine, a colorful vocabulary, and a penchant for chasing after women half her age, she is widely regarded as a bad influence on the weyrbrats that for some peculiar reason, seem to flock around her like buzzflies to a campfire. One reason might be that she encourages them to stay up past their bedtimes and watch the jungle with her, the other that she often has a sweet or two in her pocket.
While she might come across poorly in social circles, when there's something that needs doing, you can count on Dani to make sure it gets done. She does well when placed in leadership positions, as she has both a naturally commanding air about her and a lack of judiciousness when using physical force against anyone who chooses to question her appointed authority. Dani quite enjoys pushing people's buttons, meaning that her friends tend to avoid her when they're having a bad day to spare themselves needless aggravation.
Dani is not a great believer in bloodlines and family ties -why should someone get your undying devotion just because their parents screwed someone related to yours? She is also easily annoyed by those who take themselves too seriously, most especially dragon riders who know nothing at all about whers and yet still see it as reasonable to order them about. The wherhandlers of Selenitas are more family to her than anyone sharing her bloodline, and she makes it her mission in life to ensure that they are safe and getting along. If presented with the choice, she would chose her handlers over her weyrleader without hesitation.
History: Danica was born in Blossom hold to a small cotholding family of herders. She was the eldest of five children, meaning that from a young age she found herself playing 'daytime mommy' to her younger siblings. There was nothing particularly special or upsetting about her early years, which may have been why she chose to get away from her home and family as soon as possible. Danica couldn’t stand the thought of being tied down to a cothold her entire life, marrying someone that she probably wouldn't even like -forget physical attraction- and popping out babies for the rest of her days.
She left home when she turned sixteen, and found a job for herself at Selenitas Weyr tending to herdbeasts. It wasn't particularly exciting work, but she knew it well and made her living at it for more than a decade. During her time at the Weyr, Dani developed a curious fascination with whers both domesticated and wild. There was just something about the dark eyed, malformed beauties that intrigued her. When Shmee impressed Aslath, she took it to mean that it was time for her to make a change in her life.
Danisk hatched the last of his clutch, but Danica was so deeply enamored with the brown that she hardly noticed. She left her work with the herdbeasts behind in favor of a new position on the night watch. She spent quite a few nights isolated and seething after it was dissolved, but continued to stubbornly watch her side of the Weyr without orders. Whers were born and bred to guard Weyrs, and this one just so happened to be she and Danisk's home. Being part of an organized watch didn't matter once she got over her feelings of contempt for her fellow handlers. Danisk was doing what he was born to do, and so long as she was his handler she would be at his side.
During her time as a herder, Danica didn't really consider the plights and exploits of the weyrfolk to be particularly important or noteworthy. Even after impressing Danisk, things that others would consider tragic and breathtaking -the weyrwoman's daughter committing suicide for example- failed to attract her interest. Finding her home was threatened on the other hand, drew her attention quite masterfully. When the weyrling massacre took place, Danica fought as hard as any dragonrider to keep the young dragons and their riders alive. She took uncharacteristic interest in the Weyr's social structure when Shmee left shortly thereafter, and quickly decided that that the weyrwoman -who had until this point been little more than a peripheral authority figure- was not someone she admired.
When she was poisoned, Danica went on full alert. Her first assumption as a woman scorned was that Benden was once again harassing them, but with no evidence to hold against against them it was impossible to do any more than stand by and blindly treat symptoms of the disaster. Needless to say, she was infuriated when an injury she acquired during the collapse of her burning apartment prevented her from cracking any skulls when Benden returned to finish what they had started. She will probably be sore for a while, both physically and emotionally.
Name: Danisk
Color: Brown (#603918)
Age: 6 turns
Physical Appearance: This wher is a dusty shade of brown similar to the colour of parched earth. Even when freshly bathed, his hide will never have the same dark luster that most of his kind seem to acquire without even trying. He does however, wear a very distinct pattern of dark brown over top of his base shade that almost makes it look like mottled light is filtering down on top of him. This is only a visual trick of course, but a trick sufficient to make him almost invisible when in among the trees.
Danisk is a rather stocky fellow, but surprisingly graceful when one considers his great bulk. He is more large than he is muscular, and because he is not terribly fond of exercise he will probably stay this way for much of his life. His wings are of the small and useless variety one would consider typical of whers, but their membrane is a rather atypical shade of forest green that can look quite dazzling when light shines behind them. An interesting array of scars decorate his left flank -a painless but visible reminder that he narrowly escaped a feline attack in his infancy.
Personality: While altogether a rather decent sort of fellow, Danisk can often come across as prudish and snobby. He is very fond of protocol, and will not be pressed into disobeying orders or making exceptions to established rules. The rules are there for a reason. His place is to enforce them, not determine weather they are right or wrong. This often leads him to be at odds with his handler, who is more than willing to make the exceptions he so steadfastly protests -often immediately after he has protested them.
This wher is also very observant, which one would expect from a creature who has spent his life as a watchdog, except that his vigilance boarders paranoia by only the thinnest of margins. Everyone he meets is immediately considered suspicious, and he will treat them in a way that reflects that suspicion until such a time as they prove themself trustworthy. Thankfully, Danisk is not a violent or malicious Wher. He will only fight under very clearly defined circumstances while using a strict code of ethics that he will never deviate from.
Name: My Flit
Color: Green #A8E6BB #198D3C #05491A #E4F9EA
Gender: Female
Age: Hatchling
Looks To: Danica
Physical Description: At first glance, this female appears to be all elegant angles. From the sharp edges of her ridges to the quick, bending curve of her spine and tail, it is very clear that this is one very elegant firelizard. Her actual size is small, though not overtly so; just slightly under average in terms of her length. Her wings are long and graceful, curving under at the ends to allow for more quick twists and turns. The line of her body is slender and almost serpentine, undeniably feminine, but comically, her legs are slightly small for her body -- leaving to the impression of her being short for a firelizard, except when she's in the air (and there she has a grace that makes even queens pale in comparison). Aside from her legs, she is proportioned flawlessly, her wings just wide enough to allow for smooth gliding, and her tail adds to the whippy impression of her body. Unlike her mother, though, she is muscular, most prominently emphasized in her quick twists and dives; she possesses a subtle strength almost uncanny in a firelizard of her size.
Her color is also nothing to scoff at. A basic backwash of sea green makes up the majority of her hide, as though someone took a fabric and wound it around her body for warmth. However, that's only the beginning; darker green splashes spiral down her back, resembling ribbons that spiral from the back of her neck to the base of her body. The shade darkens to a significantly darker hunter-green that bands around her tail like rings, before blotting at the split end. That same dark hue colors her feet, distinctly resembling socks placed over them, and comes up to the middle of her already-short legs. Almost as a finishing touch, her eyes are rimmed in white-green as though she's wearing makeup, bringing prominence to them; she's definitely a memorable creature to behold.
Personality: This little green is undeniably a fussy creature. Hers would do well to watch her and teach her early when it is and isn't okay to scold; otherwise, she will undoubtedly fly around trying to keep every one and thing in line (be it other firelizards, salamandyrs, whers, dragons and even humans; she is absolutely fearless). Unfortunately, this bossy tendency is also exceedingly loud and she is not above outright screaming to make a point. She's also very stubborn and will be very difficult to break of this habit and any other bad ones she develops throughout her life. Listening just isn't one of her strong points when she gets herself in a fuss, and it has nothing to do with the poor memory that greens traditionally have: she's actually very intelligent and remembers just about everything. No, she's just set in her ways, for better or worse, and Hers would do well to remember that she really means the best. Being as fussy as she is, she's very prone to 'mothering' her bonded, and will try to boss her around constantly. Others will likely view this as nagging behavior - and it is unlikely she will care much about their opinions. Once she's picked Hers, it doesn't really matter what they think.
Despite being extraordinarily demanding and brash (she is prone to rushing headlong into things that may or may not be in her best interest), this firelizard does possess some decorum; she is very good at noticing when those she cares about (which aren't just Hers) are upset, and bringing them little gifts, or simply spending time around them, will not be unusual. With Hers she is more pushy than others, as well; while she scolds, fusses and is generally bossy with everyone, she reserves most of her energy for making sure Hers does right. She has no tolerance for others being self-destructive in any way. Her bonded will quickly find that he will be reminded to eat... constantly... and ferried off to bed by this little female, as will anyone she happens to like. And if they don't obey, she will unleash the terror that is her screeching -- so most often, it's better to agree just to placate her. She's only looking out for their best interests, after all!
