Killed In Fort Attack
Humans:
Name: Amelie
Age: 14 [born in April]
Gender: Female
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Rank: Apprentice Healer
Physical Appearance:
At about 5’2, Amelie definitely does not rank among the tallest of the Pernese. Doubtless she’ll grow another inch or two before she’s finished, but the likelihood of her ever growing to be over the 5’5 mark is slim at best. Currently, her build is long and lean, in spite of her shortness; her waist is relatively long and narrow, her hips slim. There’s nothing much to look at as far her bust goes, but that’s all right because she wouldn’t want you looking there anyway. At the moment, she generally appears almost lanky in build, but by the time her growth spurts are over with, she should be nicely filled out.
Though she doesn’t yet offer much to admire in the way of womanly curves, the young teen is not necessarily unattractive. Her heart-shaped face and high cheekbones are surrounded by dark, loose curls of the unruly variety. Her hair is kept exceedingly short, falling to just around her jaw-line at the longest points. Her eyes are a vivacious blue-green, large and somewhat tilted at the outer corners. They are rimmed with thick, dark lashes, and always seem to be sparkling with some hidden laughter or barely-kept secret, almost a taunting ‘I-know-something-you-don’t-know’ quality. It probably only adds to it when her dark locks fall into her face (and they often do). Her nose is short and petite, dusted with a few faint freckles that bleed onto the tops of her cheekbones. Someone particularly observant might notice a slight bump and crookedness to it.
Amelie’s skintone has a faintly golden quality; it looks as if she doesn’t spend all her time outside, but isn’t opposed to seeing daylight either. A nice blend of activities both in and outside keeps this quality to her skin, but for the most part, it’s natural. As far as clothing goes, she prefers tunics and pants to dresses and skirts, light but durable sandals to heavy, confining boots. As for colors, she’s not particularly picky; greens and blues are often seen on her frame, along with white and some neutral colors.
Personality:
The first thing one might notice about this particular girl is that she likes to talk. It doesn’t matter if the person she’s talking to is listening or not. She just doesn’t seem to have the ability to be quiet, unless of course she’s concentrating on something. However, the fact that she tends to prattle seems to deceive people into thinking she’s empty-headed. While it’s true she’s just as capable of making mistakes as the next person, Amelie is no dummy. She knows when it’s important to focus her undivided attention to something, and when it’s appropriate to multi-task. This girl has a mind like a steel trap: any information that she reads or writes down is immediately retained in her memory.
While she really is quite intelligent, Amelie might not always show it. She tends to throw caution to the wind when in pursuit of something she desperately wants or feels that she needs. A bit of a reckless streak resides within an otherwise quiet and unremarkable girl, giving her enough unpredictability to be surprising at times. For the most part, she chooses to exist quietly (yattering aside) and learn as much as she can; however, she’s certainly not opposed to making friends. More extroverted than introverted, she won’t hesitate to approach someone with a friendly smile and bid them good afternoon, or compliment them on the lovely little flitter adorning their shoulder.
Truthfully, Amelie loves people, young and old, large and small. It doesn’t seem to bother her when she has to deal with someone who is.. less receptive to her attentions, and sometimes it seems to show almost a little too much how well she cares for people. In spite of her normally cheery and docile nature, she can become quite forceful when acting in (what she believes to be) someone’s best interests. She can come off as the type to know what’s best for someone, and, being a Healer-in-training, sometimes she does in certain circumstances.. but not always. This ‘bossy’ nature only emerges when she’s truly concerned for someone’s health or safety, and can also bring out a lesser seen snarky side to the girl. Fortunately however, it’s almost impossible to truly anger her; worry is often hidden behind a façade of exasperation and/or frustration. Never would Amelie let show any feelings of outright worry or fear.
History:
Originally born in Blossom Hold to two minor holders, Amelie displayed an adventuresome spirit from the beginning. The moment she learned to walk, she made for anything she could get her hands on or fall into that had great capacity to harm her in some way. Her parents were forced to keep constant watch over her; more than once, she had to be plucked from a watering trough or a hearth just as a curious little hand was about to be thrust inside the roaring fire. Her parents were patient, but despite their belief (and hope) that it was just a phase, their daughter only became more rambunctious as she grew older.
By the time she was five Turns old, she’d taken to running about with other children in her age group. Forever getting into trouble, as children often do, she was quite content to follow the boys around and prove that she could do anything just as well, if not better, than they could. Needless to say, Amelie was fiercely competitive as a child. Really, there’s nothing much to tell; like many; her father was a dolphineer, but she didn't have much of an interest in that line of work. Her mother was a basic housewife with all the necessary skills. So it was housework for Amelie, of which she grew tired and quite frequently took breaks. Even though she didn’t know it, she felt as if there was something missing from her rather uneventful life.
The events taking place at the Weyr didn’t interest her any more than the average person, perhaps less. The Weyr had been a place to churn out rumors and drama for as long as the girl could remember, and so little attention was paid. The war in the north was given little though as well. Let the grown ups worry about that stuff; she was just a child. Like all children she learned her basic skills in classes taught by a harper but when she became a bit older she began to show an interest in other things. Croupy children, ailing animals and other such odds and ends seemed to be of particular interest to her. She was always asking her parents what was wrong with that runner, or what kind of sickness did that little boy have, and how did they fix it? When the questions became too complex for her parents to answer, they sent her elsewhere to ask. It wasn’t uncommon to see Amelie pestering a healer every chance she got. This intense curiosity about the craft only grew.
For her tenth birthing day, Amelie’s parents had come to the decision to send her to Healer Hall. At first the idea, suggested by a visiting journeyman healer who had been pestered by the curious child for upwards of an hour, was horrifying to the girl’s parents. Send their oldest daughter to the north, where the war raged? Where she would be tending to those very people who were in the thick of it all? But the journeyman was rather persuasive and convinced the couple to at least think about it. With the war raging and Thread falling once more, apprentice healers were more than welcome, even needed. When they broke the news to their daughter that she was to become an apprentice, Amelie was both excited and terrified. So far away from her home and her family, everything she’d known, and in the middle of a war. But the opportunity to learn the answers to her questions, and have access to someone who could teach her how to treat all kinds of ailments and diseases… even at such a young age, there was no way Amelie could pass up the opportunity. And so she went.
Despite the worries about the war and the inevitable homesickness, Amelie found herself settling into Healer Hall quite well. It wasn’t at all as she had feared it would be, and she was put to work immediately doing the typical apprentice tasks of restocking , resupplying, and of course the dreaded numbweed preparations when she wasn’t attending lessons or working on assignments. Over the course of several Turns, she rose through the various classes and assignments with an enthusiasm and compassion that was almost unmatched among the apprentices. Although she missed her parents something fierce, she wrote to and received letters from them on a regular basis, and a couple of visits helped to curb the homesickness that she still felt. Her parents, despite their worries about the dangers, were impressed and proud of all she had achieved in a relatively short period of time. Gifts, usually small and home made, were sent in time for birthing day presents and offered a boost in the girl’s already (usually) high spirits.
The Turns seemed to go by quickly, and just after her fourteenth birthday, Amelie graduated to senior apprentice. By then Healer Hall had all but become her home. She still missed her parents of course, but she was happy to be where she was and rarely if ever had any kind of complaints. Later in the Turn, Amelie was approached about being assigned to one of the Weyrs, and her heart jumped into her mouth before she could answer. Luckily she was reassured that it was Selenitas she would be assigned to and after given some time to consider it she agreed. Perhaps she could become a dragonhealer! The thought excited her and with her usual bright enthusiasm she quickly prepared for the approaching transfer.
