Meira nodded gratefully at Raila’s understanding. “Yeah…” she murmured. The one thing she didn’t like about a Mindmate was the possibility of being Flown (or rather, Run) by someone she really would rather didn’t get within a dragonlength of her. But, as usual, it was outweighed by all the good things, so she simply shrugged as she traced spirals on the ground with one finger absently. “Well, I don’t know, but I doubt I could just ‘give up regrets.’” She smiled at the wording. “If it’s even a choice…” she added with a soft laugh. “I mean, I’d always feel awful if I did something that hurt someone else, or something like that, you know?” Some people obviously didn’t have such a conscience, but she did and, since it seemed so scarce in some places, she was going to protect it.
The young woman smiled at the look in her companion’s eyes, a dreamy one that obviously said she had fire lizards on the brain, and who could blame her? “They’ll work for someone who didn’t Impress them?” she asked, slightly startled and unsure if she was dismayed or delighted. That meant that if she did Impress a fire lizard, which was unlikely because the dragons’ hours didn’t match that of a wher’s, she would probably end up ‘sharing’ the flitter with someone else who needed it. But it also meant that if she didn’t, she still had a chance of forming some bond, however small, with a flitter. Right? It confused her to think about it, though, so Meira dismissed it with a soft sigh.
Go back to her Hold? Meira reacted in slight dismay, repressing a shuddering breath and exhaling carefully. “I think you’d find something that’s better than Drudgework,” she said anxiously. “I mean…” She paused, trying to figure out what to say that would comfort Raila. “There must be something,” she said firmly. As the girl stood, Meira accepted her helping hand and pulled herself to her feet. “Thanks,” she said, gratefully, as she picked up her broom and curled her fingers around it unhappily. Gah, if anything, she’d just go back to being a Healer…it was so much better, if not as exciting, as this. “Nice talking to you, too,” she replied, as she followed Raila.
