He didn’t scream, and R’wign was very proud of that fact. But when he hit the floor with the full force of a grown woman on top of him looking nearly rabid, he did thrash and flail, moving as much out of the -- the thing’s way as he possibly could. The absolute last thing he wanted was to have his ear chewed off by someone mad with salamandyr lust. R’wign rolled over beneath Darya, flipping quickly on the ground with an almost feline grace. His arms came up and he pushed at her, trying to keep her face away from his without actually hurting the bluerider. It wasn’t her fault. He knew that, in the back of his mind. Surely she had no understanding of what she was doing or that she was pretty much mauling some other human being; if she was aware of it, he was positive she’d have been embarrassed. Most people didn’t like being seen as rabid animals, after all. He flinched away, his fingers settling on her chin to forcefully keep her face away from his ears, as his heart beat pounded; he did not want to have to spend another few nights in the infirmary explaining that he’d been nearly mutilated by someone who owned a salamandyr - a bronze one, at that. No sir.
From his weyr, Ellie gave a startled cry and the rest of R’wign’s flits flew into action. All of the five remaining (awake) firelizards began to fly about, chattering and squawking noisily. Only R’wign’s mental prodding kept them from swooping down and attacking Darya for her impudence, but even Ellie’s gaze was scarlet with agitation. Collision and Hazard were the only ones not present -- Hazard for obvious reasons and Collision because he was asleep, thank you very much, and he had no intentions of waking up for something so trivial as a salamandyr run… not again --
Hazard was really tempted to fly down and bite them all for insulting the pretty. It would have been rude, it would, but didn’t they realize how bad they were being? Didn’t the little runners know they were offering insults, not compliments? Pretties deserved compliments… never such mean remarks. Mean-spirited, they were! But - he was suddenly struck by a feeling of alarm as the one bronze actually attacked one of the browns. What was he doing? Did he honestly think that would earn him any favors? No wonder Ellie hadn’t picked him! Yes, Hazard remembered that bronze salamandyr as the one that was chasing after Ellie -- he hoped that the pretty knew that he was obviously unworthy, since… well, he was attacking someone. The fire lizard almost pitied Troublemaker… almost. But then, part of him registered that maybe the brown deserved it. He was being mean to their shiny beauty --
R’wign turned to look over his shoulder at Lennae, his eyebrows raising as she spoke and… jumped… around them…? The look on his face was surely nothing short of incredulous; did she know how silly she looked, hopping about that way? He made a mental note to taunt her about it later (perhaps as revenge for the feline that he still hadn’t punished her for yet) -- some time when he wasn’t about to be eaten alive by angry blue riders. Riiiight.
-- But then all at once, she was speaking to him and all of Hazard’s anger, all of his agitation, dissipated. Hazard fluted triumphantly and swept down to pick up Brat with his claws. Yes, she was big for a salamandyr, but even a large queen was not much bigger than a green fire lizard, and he could carry her, he could! He’d be more than worthy of her. See, see, she was the best, she was -- and that made him special for even being worthy of her notice. Happily chirruping a compliment, Hazard beat his wings to lift Brat up into the air - at least temporarily - so that she was further away from those brutes that were attacking one another. Yes, brutes. He would not let them hurt or insult his pretty, pretty Brat anymore~ He’d bite them all if they tried, he would. Or maybe he’d just steal Hero’s method of dumping them in the river every time they started. That worked. He’d let the pretty decide~ but he’d always protect her~
The weight on him lessened as Lennae actually moved to grab at Darya and R’wign blinked twice, surprised. She was rescuing him? How nice of her. Maybe Lennae was still in there after all. He saw his opportunity and seized it, rolling out from underneath the bluerider as fast as he could. He was just about to leap to his feet to continue running when a lofty voice resounded through his mind and stopped him in his tracks with an almost petrified look flaring over his face:
R’wignmine, the goldling chose Hazard.
Uh oh. Well, that explained a lot...
