Gareth watched as she wheeled, turning back to face them all again, only at a horizontal cant rather than vertical. She sped past the other Bronze, scooting upwards at an angle as he heard her snarl. He was pleased when he saw the other male peel away. One down, two to go, and he was the last Bronze left. He followed her arcing pattern in the sky with easy finesse, his wide wings beating powerfully as he followed her into the sun. She began to fall into a more downwards angle, which the big bronze knew meant she still had more to give to the chase. His muscles bunched with excitement, only just starting to feel the strain of flight, and he stretched forward as she took the dive steeper, reaching to make himself go faster.
He followed her skim, skirting the trees she did and occasionally taking a different path that had him dodging unknown treetops, testing his reaction time. He wove his path into hers, alternating directions in an attempt to show off his dexterity, attempting to time his moves both to hers, and the trees that rose in his way. She turned, and he mirrored the move, turning in the opposite direction but ending up on her tail. A Brown fell behind as she directed, and Gareth crooned to her. She was choosing so wisely, and he approved of her dismissal tactic.
The Queen then changed directions again and began a headlong dash upwards, and the Bronze could feel that it would be her last. He raced beside the remaining Brown, thrusting upwards for more speed, more distance from the ground. The Glory was diving high into the sky, seeking the height needed for such a glorious one to end upon, and he worked to meet her. His Queen slowed as she neared her end, and he swept up, much closer than before. His fiery heart cried out in joy as she turned to him, clutching herself tightly to him and twining her neck with his.
Gareth bugled, a deep sonorous note that burned the air with vibrations, holding tightly to her as they began a slow arc towards the ground, coupling in passion and unmatched rapture. His limbs cradled her gently as they plummeted downwards, his tail the rudder needed to keep them from utter freefall. His wings were at half-mast, guiding them until the last moment, gaining the needed time to create the strongest match. His eyes whirled with violet in such a shade that they seemed to be glowing as he began to pull them out of the fall, angling his wings to sluice through the air until they were fully extended, his tail working hard. Flipping them so that she was beneath, Gareth let his great wings fill with air, the tendons snapping audibly with the strain, but he forgot the brief pain of too much weight in the need to keep her safe as they flew, bringing them into a glide as they twined through that air.
…
She was picking and choosing. First, one male was eliminated quickly , and then another as she pulled both him and the remaining Brown into the center of the room, announcing without words her intent to chose between the two of them, her final pair. The Bronze purred to her, watching as she contemplated the both of them. Her choice was sudden, and sent waves of giddy joy through him as she jumped forward, capturing him in her embrace, which he returned heartily, whirling them away from the other Brown as a possible obstruction. He needed her now and he would have no more waiting as he swept her towards the bed, purring and growling in unison, the sound coming from deep within his chest, a sound of upcoming contentment.
