Ciceroth's new tone took Aslath aback. He sounded... smaller. She crooned anxiously. No, no, you did not upset me... It just do not like thinking about what happened. It upsets Mine, she told him. It made her uneasy to think that she had just made Ciceroth uncomfortable. He was being so nice to her, and the idea of making him upset because she had been wasn't an appealing one. Tentatively, she stepped forward to him, and butted him ever-so-lightly with her head. She wanted to make him comfortable with her again. Are you all right? she asked him affectionately. Still, she felt rather guilty. First she upset the little cousin, and then Ciceroth... I just worry about Mine a lot and I sometimes forget about other people and dragons, she told him, hoping this would make him relax more. Don't you tense up at all when Yours is not well?
Shmee nodded slowly. She considered asking him to explain, but she had no right to go that deep. Ka'rys was an acquaintance, not a friend. But no sooner had she thought that than he asked her about what S'rei didn't believe. Immediately, she twitched, and looked out in the direction of the weyrledge for a split second. In the office, she wasn't able to see Aslath, who was the culprit, judging by Ka'rys' words. And... Miguel and Shei were crying? A visible look of horror crossed her face. Shei could have been expected more, since she had given her to Laurie so abruptly. But Miguel? She hadn't realized that she had upset her former foster son. She cuddled Shei closer to her, rocking her with her wide blue eyes wide in what could possibly be interpreted as fright. "I... I didn't know that I made Miguel cry," she said softly. It seemed like everything around her was crumbling in that instant.
Shei, unaware of why her mother was pulling her closer, smiled brightly, and waved her arm with Ophelie again. Aslath, what did you tell Ciceroth? Shmee demanded anxiously. There was a long pause on Aslath's end.
He had said that Flights don't determine how people feel, so I tried to explain why it made you sad, the gold replied, clearly nervous. She didn't know why Hers was so upset with this. She was only trying to fix things! I thought he would understand...
Shmee looked down at Shei with a concentrated look, determinedly not looking back at Ka'rys as all color drained from her face. "She is only talking about an argument that we had," she told Ka'rys coldly. "It was unimportant."
It made you different, though. It /is/ important, Aslath urged. Shmee forcefully pressed her away from her mind.
I will go to the Hold and I will take a vacation. I'll feel better after that.
And a mindhealer, like you said? the gold replied firmly. Shmee's jaw clenched.
Yes.
Aslath fell silent at last, and Shmee returned her gaze back to Ka'rys. She stared at him stonily for a moment. "I think it's time we finish with this," she told him in that same, cold tone. "Or are we done now?"
