Kaius may have been an adult by most standards, but he was still a teenager, and a teenage boy at that. Like most teenage boys, he was hungry ALL THE TIME. It didn't help that he was unusually tall and still lanky. At times, he wondered if he would ever grow into his body. None of the girls seemed interested in him. Not that it mattered. He hardly ever had time for girls with his candidacy, but still, it would be nice. He doubted anyone would ever be interested in him. He was much too quiet for most girls, didn't say what he was thinking ever. That and Casiloy seemed to be following him around. Thus, any spare time he found himself with, he decided to eat. That's where the tall boy was now, sneaking into the kitchen.
Kaius did this quite often, since, as mentioned before, he was always hungry. He often found himself hungry mere hours after eating, so he always tried to get more food after the fact. King was wrapped around Kai's shoulder, quietly contemplative, until Kai's thoughts shifted to Casiloy. At this, the mandyr stirred with a chirrup, eyes whirring curiously. Casiloy's Casiloy? Kaius sighed heavily. Ever since they hatched, King seemed to be content to spend a lot of time around his brown brother. He wasn't sure why. That brown was as strange as his bonded, and maybe King thought he felt obligated to spend time with him so that at least someone would. Whatever the reason, the two of them and now King by association, liked to spend most of their time teasing poor Kaius. It was all in good fun, he knew, but still, he didn't like being teased, and he wondered if he would ever meet someone who didn't delight in teasing him.
Kaius didn't dignify King's query with a response. The mandyr knew how much it bothered him and he trilled with amusement, rubbing himself along his bonded's neck, keeping his sharp frills back so he didn't accidentally hurt him. The gawky teen knew that he could never be too mad at his mandyr. He just loved him so much. He didn't think he would, but he couldn't help it. Ignoring King's amusement, he started rummaging through the food stores in the kitchen. This caught the mandyr's attention again and he took to the air, gliding over to land on a bag, sinking his sharp claws in. Hungry now, Kaimine. Food smells make me want.
Kaius rolled his eyes. Now he needed food for a very hungry, very insistent mandyr.

Lilu hated chores. Today she was working in the kitchen, and had been sent by the head cook to grab a sack of tubers from the storage room. As she walked into the room, she was fully concentrating on her fingernails, her lips curled into a frown as she inspected the pretty blue paint job that would be ruined by hauling around a bunch of burlap sacks, she knew it. Her toenails were painted a similar shade, though they were hidden beneath feminine shin-high wherskin boots, as she quickly discovered her normal bare feet or sandals weren't appropriate for kitchen drudge work, with the huge numbers of booted feet milling around during mealtimes, just waiting to stomp on her poor, petite toes. That, and the splashes of hot water or grease, which is why she also wore a pair of skin-tight tan cotton trousers and a form-fitting dark brown blouse with elbow-length sleeves. She had her crimson hair bound up in layers atop her head, and had used raspberries to make her lips a dark maroon.
As she reached the bag of tubers, she reached down distractedly, hauling the bag up quite easily despite her slight appearance. Suddenly, a part of the bag moved, and bright orange eyes were looking right at her from their perch on the bag, now held in a two-armed grip to Lilu's chest. Screaming in surprise, she dropped the sack, sending tubers spilling out onto the floor as the brown salamandyr glided to the feet of his bonded. Looking over at where the creature went, she saw the lanky teenager, and brushing an errant hair from in front of her eyes, she asked, "What is THAT thing?"

Kaius hated chores just as much as Lilu, which is why he was currently ransacking the kitchen. This was the exact reason he didn't notice where King flew off to. It was also the reason why he didn't notice the girl walk into the kitchen in the first place. It wouldn't mater to him either way. Currently, he had his mouth full. King, on the other hand, was in a better position to notice the red head...and he did. The mandyr's eyes widened and he shrieked, his voice mingling with the girl's. Kaius jumped, slowly turning his head to face the intruder, a slice of bread stuffed in his mouth still. He had turned around just in time to see King take off, grabbing onto one of the rafters with his tail. He pulled himself to his feet, perching on the rafter, staring down at Lilu. His frill stood out straight and he chattered loudly towards her, eyes flashing rapidly yellow and orange.
BADBADBAD NO NO SCARY GIRL! He was chittering so fiercely, that he nearly pitched forwards off of the rafters. Fortunately, he used his tail to anchor him and quit chattering. Instead, he merely tossed the girl dirty looks, sitting on his haunches and wrapping his tail around his paws. Kai, on the other hand, found the confrontation quite amusing. Brown eyes sparkled with uncontained mirth. He ripped the chunk of bread out of his mouth, swallowing what he had in there before answering Lilu.
“ That THING is King.” He lifted up his other hand, a bit of smoked herdbeast. King, obviously done being angry at Lilu glided down to Kaius, grabbing the meat in his mouth while he fell, gracefully wrapping his tail around the boy’s neck and resting on his chest, nomming hungrily on the meat. It wasn’t as good as it was raw, but meat was meat was meat. Kaius looked from him back to Lilu. “ How long have you been here? And you haven’t seen a salamandyr?” The tall boy rubbed the back of his neck, tilting his head at the girl. “ Who are you anyway? Haven’t seen you around.”

Lilu fell back a bit as the offended 'mandyr screamed into her mind, having never before experienced mind-speech... at least, not that she remembered. Looking up at the puffed-up brown, the image of a brown lizard-like winged creature made the spot on the left-front of her head ache terribly, like it did when she tried to remember her life before waking up in Igen Hold, but she shook it off, blinking rapidly a few times, then looked over at Kaius as he answered her question.
Seeing he was a teenage boy, though a little lanky and awkward-looking, she still automatically turned on her charming smile as she responded, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to insult your little friend. I was just startled, is all. His skin blended in with the sack, and I wasn't paying much attention." A short giggle, and a carefully-fabricated flush to her cheeks, and she continued, "I've never seen one of those... salamandyrs, you called it? I've only been here a couple weeks now, I was Searched from Igen Hold." Holding out her delicate hand, she stepped a couple steps closer to the boy and said, "My name is Lilu, it's a pleasure to meet you."

Having now downed the jerky and having realized that Kaius didn't have any more for him at the moment, King decided to investigate the girl. The mandyr wanted to fly over to her to study her closer, but he knew Kaius wouldn't want him to. Chirring lightly, the brown climbed up onto the boy's shoulder and watched the girl with curious flashing eyes of blue, green and interspersed reds. He was still hungry and that little bit of meat hadn't filled him up. It had been enough to let him think more clearly, however. Pretty lady is pretty, mine. You like pretty? Now, the normal observer would just conclude that the salamandyr forgot that he was still broadcasting to Lilu, but Kaius didn't think that for a moment. King was an intelligent bronze, he never did anything without thinking. Everything had a purpose, a plan.
And apparently...the bronze's plan was to embarrass him at the moment.
The tall boy sighed lightly, deciding to ignore the mandyr's words for the moment. He was half right. Kaius did appreciate females a lot. He just wasn't well versed on romance, or girls, or anything having to do with that subject. He wasn't raised around a lot of pretty girls, or even outgoing girls for that matter. All the girls he knew in his childhood had either been too submissive to catch his attention, or already involved with someone else. Lighttower wasn't the best place for assertive females.
King puffed up indignantly at being called little. Not little. Brother Queen is little. I am King. I am big. Well, relatively speaking, for a mandyr...well, not really. King really wasn't big for a bronze...maybe a brown. But there were some browns bigger than he was, as Kaius liked to remind the bronze sometimes. " Well, he'll probably forgive you since you were scared of him. He doesn't get that enough." Kaius' eyes widened when she said she hadn't seen any mandyrs. " Well, stick around, you'll see plenty. I didn't know much about them before I came here either."
Kaius looked at her hand as she outstretched it and seemed to be deciding what to do with it when King took his own initiative. The mandyr leaped forward onto her arm, being careful not to hurt her with his claws. Using his tail to anchor himself, he worked his way along her arm, looking up at her with blue and green flashing eyes. Pretty, pretty, pretty. King liked pretty things.
Kaius stared at the mandyr for a while before clearing his throat. " I'm Kaius...and King seems to have forgiven you already."

Lilu giggled at the salamandyr's mindwords, legitimately this time. "Why thank you, King," she said, then added, "And yes, I'm sure you are big. I just haven't met any other salamandyr's to compare you against, is all." In response to Kaius, she said, "Oh, yes, terribly frightened. He's so large and powerful, I was afraid he was going to rip me to pieces," as she winked one blue-grey eye at Kaius playfully, her lips still curled into a smile. "Oh, I intend to stick around. I'm a Candidate, and I can't wait for the next dragon hatching. I'm sure I'll Impress one, and it'll be great!" she added, honestly excited.
She jumped a bit again when King suddenly leapt onto her arm, but recovered quickly enough, looking more closely at the 'mandyr as it moved up her limb. She noted that as it moved, it had a certain metallic sheen to it, and figured out that it was in fact a bronze, not a brown as she had thought at first. "You are a big, strong salamandyr, aren't you, King?" she said to the bronze, cooing and scratching carefully under his chin with her free hand. Facing back to Kaius, she asked, "So what brings you into the kitchen stores? Errands like myself?"

Kaius glanced down at the mandyr, glad that he was making the girl laugh instead of making her flee in fear or worse, slap him. Kaius had been slapped before, believe it or not. He wasn't a fan of indignant females. He'd rather face a cross salamandyr than an angry female any day. The boy tilted his head. That little salamandyr knew what to say or what to do to make anyone happy, which was quite different with him. Kai didn't know what to do with anything most of the time. It wouldn't be too much of a stretch to say that the mandyr was teaching him social skills, as odd as that might have sounded.
" Don't let him fool you. He's actually small for a bronze." King whipped his head about, hissing indignantly at his before shuffling his way up Lilu's arm. Bad mine. King big. Mine knows this. As if to spite his bonded, King clambered up the girl's shirt, wrapping himself around her neck, and all but sticking his tongue out at the candidate. Kai wasn't phased. He knew who the mandyr would go home with. Lifting an eyebrow, he focused on Lilu again. " You're awfully sure of yourself." Ego could be good in small doses. He had been told it was a good idea to believe you would impress when going into a hatching. It made you seem stronger to the hatchlings or whatever. He had no illusions. " I've been left standing at a hatching before. Shit happens." He said with a shrug. It hadn't been the end of his life when he hadn't impressed, and he doubted anyone would die if they never did either. It wasn't that Kaius had a backup plan if he didn't impress, he just didn't like getting his hopes up.
King was thoroughly enjoying the attention that Lilu was currently giving him. He purred and rubbed his head all over her hand, body trembling in barely contained ecstasy. Oh he did like getting scratched. The candidate looked from Lilu, to the food in his hand and then back again. Her question made him think. Now would be a good time to lie to her. To tell her that he was indeed doing something productive instead of stealing food. Instead, he shook his head. " I was just hungry." Real smooth, Kai.

Lilu pursed her lips slightly at the boy's attitude, responding, "Well, I know I will Impress to a great dragon. Something inside me tells me so, like a dragon is what I'm meant for. I'm sure you'll get your dragon when the right dragon is hatched," she added, giving Kaius an encouraging smile.
Still scratching and rubbing on the affectionate King, she looked down at the spilled tubers on the ground, realizing the cook would soon come looking for her to see what was taking so long, and she didn't want to deal with that. Glancing at her nails once more, and realizing there was a possibility she could get out of messing them up after all, she turned her charm full-bore on Kaius, making her eyes look bigger, sticking her lower lip out very slightly, and positioning her body in the exact way formulated to get a boy's attention and wrap him around your little finger, and said, "Pooh, I have to get all these tubers back in this sack and get them out to the kitchen, but there are so many, and the bag was so heavy. If only there were a tall boy who could help me, I would be so appreciative..." She punctuated her efforts with a subtle eyelash flutter in Kaius' direction.

Kaius shrugged at her words, apathetic at best. He hadn't impressed at the last hatching, so perhaps she was right. They didn't actually choose the dragons that they impressed to, so she could come out with a great dragon, or one that really wasn't so good. It was all luck of the draw at best. He wouldn't say anything to her about that though. Dashing girls' hopes and dreams wasn't in his plan for the day. If she was so certain that she was going to impress to an exceptional dragon, then he would let her. He, for his part, was a realist. After failed impressions, he didn't hold any illusions that he would be exceptional to any dragons.
Then she looked at him and he tilted his head very slightly to the side. It took him a second, since he was a boy, but he soon realized that she wanted him to do her work for her. At first, he thought about telling her to shove it and to do her own work, but King gave him a dirty look. Be nice to the pretty lady, minemine. he projected to Kaius alone. Sighing lightly, Kai knew that if he didn't oblige his mandyr, he wouldn't cease to hear about this later. Plus, despite everything, he was enjoying talking to Lilu.
" Okay then." he said, leaning his lanky frame over to scoot tubers back into the bag before lifting it up with ease. " Lead the way."

Lilu giggled happily, clapping her hands and leaning over to give Kaius a small kiss on the cheek. "Thank you so much," she beamed, "You're the greatest!" Continuing to pet King, she pointed with her free hand to the exit to the storeroom, saying, "This way," and then proceeding to exit the room, making sure to reward him with an especially hip-swishing walk that showed off her toned rear-end to advantage.
As they reached the table where the head cook was preparing a stew for lunch, she pointed at an empty spot on the counter and said, "Right there will be fine." Ignoring the dirty look from the head cook for hiring out her work to others, she stepped in close to Kaius and took his hand in hers, giving him her soulful eyes again and saying, "Are you busy? I would love it if you would help me the rest of my chores with your big, stwong arms," she added, purposefully mispronouncing the last word childishly, doing her classic "cute, helpless girl in need of a big, strong boy" routine.

Lilu's reaction was positively sickening. Kaius could tell that he was feeding that little part of her that wanted him wrapped around her little finger, the part that got off on having him do whatever she wanted, but because of the mandyr still precariously perched on her shoulder. So, keeping his mouth silent, he followed her silently, his face as impassive as he could make it. Not that Kaius had ever showed that much emotion usually, and he was showing even less right now. Though, he was enjoying the view of her walking away from him quite a bit.
After plopping the bag down onto the table she indicated, Kai was slightly confused when she walked right up to him and took his hands. His first reaction was to get her away somehow, but instead, he stood there, an eyebrow lifted slightly quizzically. As soon as she spoke, everything fell into place, and gave her an incredulous look. King gave a chirrup and scrambled over to Kaius, climbing up his shirt. After a moment, the boy gave her a wry grin and pulled his hands away from her.
" As much as I would love to do all of your chores for you, I have my own to do." He was about to leave it at that when King scratched his ear fiercely. Nice!, Kaius frowned, but continued on. " We can do our chores together though, if you'd like. Maybe they'd go a little faster?" There was his offer, it was up to her if she wanted to take it or not.

Lilu let a small frown of disapproval cross her lips momentarily as the boy steeled himself and made a counter-offer. It seemed like she had the boy right where she wanted him, yet now he was fighting back. Perhaps he was, in fact, one of those strange boys who liked other boys, and so was immune to her feminine charms? "Well, either way," she thought to herself as she saw King slash the boy's ear when he tried to get out of helping her at all, "I've got his salamandyr under control, and apparently it's got him under control." Allowing herself a small self-satisfied grin, she reached out to scratch King under the chin again, both to keep her hold over him strong as well as test the boy's reaction to her hand being in such close proximity to his face, and said, "Hmm, well, I guess that could work. My chores are in the kitchens, and we're already here... where are yours?" she concluded, placing on hand on her chin in simulated thought and pursing her lips slightly as if considering whether they would do her chores or his chores first.

He could tell from her expression that he had disappointed her, as he thought he would. He just hoped he hadn't disappointed her too much. After all, it would suck to have made an enemy out of someone he would have to deal with for likely the rest of his life. As such, he hoped his offer of helping her was good enough for her. After all, it would likely be good for her to do some of the work. Luckily, however, it seemed that she wasn't terribly upset, because she reached out to scratch King under the chin. There was something about her hand being so close to his face that he liked, but he couldn't tell what it was. For his part, the salamandyr was loving all this attention. He purred pleasantly, lifting his head to allow better access for Lilu's fingernails and fluttering his wings in ecstasy. Kauis frowned a little. Traitor. If he heard, which Kai was sure he did, he didn't respond at all.
Giving a light sigh, he was pleased when she agreed to his proposal. Probably more pleased than he would actually admit to being. For, while he wasn't interested in being the girl's little toy, he was enjoying being around her. She was a good looking girl, and he always appreciated beauty in any way he could get it, even if he had to work to be around it. When she spoke, Kaius nodded a little. " My chores are in the stables, but I guess we should start with yours since we're already here." He did think, in passing, about the possibility of Lilu taking off once her chores would finish, and he knew there was a real possibility that she would leave him to do most of the work, but at least it had been on his terms.
At least, he thought so. What Kaius had yet to realize yet are that women are always in control, whether you realize it or not.

Lilu watched Kaius' face when she reached out to scratch under King's chin, and saw his eyes follow her hand and the flicker of interest at the corners of his mouth. So, not a boy-lover, then, this one. He just needed a little more... breaking, that's all, like a stubborn runner.
Lilu lead Kaius around the kitchens, having him help her do her chores. She did help, of course, though all the physical labor was, obviously, left to Kaius. Lilu did reward the boy, though, with such treats as an "accidental" brush up against him here, a languid stretch to show off her body there, and even bending over at the waist to pick up a fallen item after she'd convinced him that she was allergic to the sweet sand they used to wash the dishes and therefore he had to do the entire load of dishes piled in the sinks.
All the while, she also kept buttering up King, continuing to itch him, pet him, and even once kissing him on the nose, in part to keep him controlled, but also to tease Kaius and see if she could make him jealous of his own salamandyr.

To say that Kaius was unaware of the girl's motives would be an understatement. He was as uneducated when it came to girls as a drudge in an infirmary. He just didn't have the first clue on how to go about dealing with them. The girls at Lightower were either to subservient to give you much of a run for your money, or too aggressive to be subtle in the least. He didn't know anything about the finer qualities of a woman's psyche and he was a bit naive to believe that her attention to King was anything other than a girl enjoying a salamandyr. He might have seen past her trying to get him to do all of her chores for him, but that was as far as he could see. His vision was clouded by a perfect body, lightly brushing up against his, stretching too close to him to give attention to his salamandyr.
He noticed, offhandedly, that he was indeed doing most of the work. Of course, she did do some, and for that Kai found his respect for this girl edging up a bit, but for the most part, Kaius was doing Lilu's chores for her. As the day wore on, this became more and more obvious to the tall boy, and his resolve was chipping away, bit by bit. Her little signs of affection, at least to King, kept him going, because after all, he was still a teenage boys, and teenage boys would do anything for a girl.
While they were finishing up the last of her chores, Kaius spoke without looking at her. " You aren't going to help me with my chores, are you?" Because after all, he still had a bunch of chores to do in the stable after this, and something told him she wasn't sticking around. He hoped he was wrong, he wanted to spend more time with her, if only to work.
