“It’s the South, everything’s abnormally big. Like people.” See: Weyrleader. Who wasn’t actually someone Vix knew, but obviously he knew of the man. And his height. Also see: Dmitri, who was his junior and taller than him by a lot. Which Vix supposed was fitting for the whole ‘mentor’ deal, but still vaguely annoying. “Or maybe it just likes to eat a lot…” he added vaguely, crinkling his nose at the moth. When Rook got hyper, Vix started to run at the mouth a bit more than was quite normal for him, and when his guard was down as it was now (moths, go figure), it was that much worse. “What do moths even eat…”
His hand twitched again, Vix curling it absently into a fist to keep from instinctively swatting at the moth. When moths got into his room, he swatted at them to make them go away; it was practically imprinted in his brain that moths were not welcome and should be swatted at with his hand. And maybe a broom if it was that big. Normally those moths weren’t really this pretty, but still. The whole moth-thing was the same. He blinked, tilting his head at the dappled black pattern. “Like…plants or what, they’re not like butterflies with the whole nectar thing, do they have the whole spout-mouth-whatever…?”
Oh, oh, Tekivisk observed, VixHers wasn’t making sense anymore…but oh well. She didn’t understand him at all when he went on about the little tinkering-things, so this was actually maybe an improvement. The green crooned at Darmosk, gaze dropping from moth to bronze briefly. Didn’t they, though? It was worse when it was on her nose, she added, emphatically rubbing her nose against Vix’s thigh for emphasis. It made her sneeze (but sneezing was fun, so that was okay, she supposed). At least he couldn’t sneeze with his eyes, that would be strange. But! Oh, yes, butterflies were much prettier. They would have to find one sometime, maybe in the late afternoon…if they were still out then?
Uglies, Rook echoed agreeably, nuzzling against his mother; he was becoming restless. His claws picked idly at the branch underfoot, scraping against bark. Silliessougly notprettyaaaall… Another shiver, almost closer to a twitch. The blue’s tail curled and uncurled around the branch, blinking rapidly. Why /care/ silliesmothbutterflysame thingis.

Darmori chuckled at Vix’s explanation. “Not everything but I know what you mean. some of the people here are huge and not just in height either." Nope some of them looked like they could crush him simply with a look. Shivering at that thought the blonde leaned down to get a really close look at this moth. Looking no doubt for some kind of mouth part. Did moth’s have teeth? If so that might be a bit scary.
The rambling of his roommate did not escape notice but the bronze handler was far from complaining. It was nice to keep the other teen speaking. Made it feel like they where finally having an actual conversation. “Huh to be truthful I have no idea what they eat.” Still staring at the large insect he scrunched his nose. “Maybe they eat leaves like a caterpillar?” That didn’t make much sense really but eh. “I think one of the drudges once told me she thought they eat clothes to. But I’m not really sure if that is true or not.”
Drawing closer he grabbed Darmosk’s snout and gently turned the large head to get a better look. The moth didn’t seem to mind either way and continued it’s slow wing fanning. Peering very closely Darmori snorted. ‘It doesn’t look like it has a mouth at all. I don’t know. Maybe they don’t eat anything. But if they don’t eat how do they stay alive? Yes either way none of this made an sense.” Letting go of Darmosk’s nose he shrugged. “I don’t even know who we could ask? Maybe Dmitri? That kid seems like he knows everything.” Okay so maybe the bronze handler still felt a bit of hero worship towards the bronze handler. But well he was cool! All stoic and smart and, and, and. Before he could start to try to rationalize that thought Darmori stopped and turned to Vix. “Maybe examining it closer would help.” with slow precise movements Darmori started to reach towards the large moth.
Darmosk lolled his tongue out and crooned to his sister. His handler for the moment completely ignored. Darmori was neither as pretty or fun as his green sister after all. Oh yes! It tickled horribly. He could only imagine what it would feel like on his nose. Would definitely make him sneeze as well he supposed. As the moth moved he closed one eye again. Oh yes he still very much wanted to see one of these butterfly things. Especially if it was as pretty as his sister said and he had no reason to doubt her. What about dawn? His eyes could stand the light pretty well as could hers. Right before bedtime? Would they be out then? In the bronze’s excitement about planning he forgot about the moth on his eye ridge and sprang to his feet jarring the creature into taking flight just as Darmori reached for it. Whoops. Tongue lolling out Darmosk watched as his made some unsuccessful leaps for the retreating moth and then took off after it on foot. “Hey! Come back. I just wanna examine you!”
Harmony noting Rook’s unease with staying still uncurled from the blue. Sitting back on her haunches she demurely cleaned one forepaw her whiling eyes going from it to the whers below. Despite the running and garbled quality to the blue’s words the gold had no problems in deciphering. Same yes. All ugly. Flaring her over large wings and then tucking them back into position she moved forward to get a better look at the ground below. Satisfied that the moth was leaving she crooned. Ugly leaving now. We go back? Looking back towards Rook she purred. He needn’t stay so still on her account. Although she appreciated the attempt.

…did Darmori even know how that particular sentence could be taken? Vix blinked awkwardly at the younger male for a moment, not quite sure what he was waiting for. Maybe just for it to click or something. But he didn’t wait long; when the silence drew out to almost-uncomfortable, he muttered a noncommittal response that sounded vaguely like an agreement and leaned closer to Darmosk to pretend the moth was distracting or something. Yeah, or something. He crinkled his nose instead – because whatever else they might be, moths were safe. He was fairly certain discussing moths would not lead to either of them saying anything they didn’t mean, anyway.
Moths were very straightforward. Wings, body, antennae. Semi-pretty. Unremarkable, generally. This one was clearly (and thankfully) an exception. Vix could only stand so many unremarkable things before the desire to make something remarkable became too much to ignore. “Moths aren’t caterpillars,” he corrected absently, before he blinked and then rephrased, “I mean, they don’t start as caterpillars, they start as like, larvae or something-else, but I don’t think Dmitri cares about butterflies or moths, he…” Blink. Blink. Vix stared blankly after Darmori, rather bewildered.
Then he turned to Darmosk, crinkling his nose at the bronze. “Does he really think he can catch it,” he sighed disapprovingly, as if the bronze were another human. “Or is he just operating under the delusion that moths can understand Pernese and obey simple commands like ‘come’…”
Maybe both? Tekivisk suggested, sounding more amused than anything else; the green rubbed her head against Darmosk’s shoulder pleasantly, draping her neck over the bronze’s back contentedly. His was so very amusing, and Darmosk wasn’t to worry; there would be other pretty moths and even prettier butterflies. Tekivisk was sure they’d be out at dawn – they could go looking. Hers wouldn’t mind taking them, she volunteered, and Vix twitched at her, a venomous glare narrowing on the green wher, who blithely ignored it. He didn’t ever mean it when he got all fussy, promise.
Moving. Oh, please, moving. Rook brushed his head affectionately against Harmony’s shoulder, and then slithered away from his mother; the energy that curled through his small body was more than enough to last him perhaps the next week. Assuming he didn’t eat for that time frame. Which was not good. VixMinemothsnoneyesyes… the question had no noticeable uplift at the end to indicate a question (or, indeed, the sentence ending at all) but it was warning enough before the small Salamandyr’s body latched onto Vix’s pant leg and he curled upwards towards his shoulder. …Motherminetooplease…

Darmosk turned his gaze towards Vix and gave a soft wuff. His tail thumping against the ground he brushed his mind against the other boys. His was trying to catch it yes. Silly human wasn’t he? It was a game you see. Games where fun. Even if he didn’t catch it if he had fun doing it what was the harm? Reaching forward the large male licked Vix’s hand and then flopped onto the flowers to make it easier for his sister to snuggle him. Tilting his head he nuzzled down Tekivisk’s back. Oh yes! He would definitely accept her invite. They would find the best and prettiest of butterflies he was sure. It was sooo nice of hers to do that. The bronze turned happy blue eyes to the green handler before they went back to his sister. This was good. They could spend extra time together. Wuffing happily Darmosk gave the green an affectionate nuzzle before throwing a croon Vix’x way. Maybe they could play some games while they waited? After cuddling of course. Cuddling was very important to. Harmony crooned, licking Rook as he brushed past her. With a happy trill she flared one wing, testing the wind. Still enough for her purposes. With a sudden leap the gold left her perch, her overlarge wings easily supporting her in a glide. Banking the large mandyr expertly impacted upon Vix’x chest. Claws hooked into the fabric, careful not to catch skin, as she powered herself upwards towards his shoulder. Cambering up onto it she flopped across the greenhandler’s shoulder as if she belonged there. Technically in Harmony’s opinion she did. Rook was hers and so by proxy Rook’s was also hers. See? With a croon she curled her tail about the boy’s neck as an anchoring point. Rook such good baby. Share with his mother. She praised happily before turning whirling eyes to hers. Just what was he doing? So undignified. Darmori in fact was still chasing after the moth. Leaping up as if to try and grab it with his hand. Unfortunately upon landing after the second attempt his foot clipped a rock and he was sent sprawling into a large group of flowers. Out from the white blossoms exploded a myriad of insects. Rolling over onto his back Darmori groaned. “Owwww.” Crinkling his nose he tired to catch his breath. Having the wind knocked out of you clearly sucked. Above him however a bright green moth hovered and he opened his mouth and wildly gestured upwards, hoping someone was looking this way. Look! Look! Luna moth! He found one! ( Clickith the pretty u.u)

Ew, wher drool.
Vix crinkled his nose at Darmosk in an expression of halfhearted disapproval (he’d mostly given up on that; clearly Impressing a wher meant becoming a human salt lick) and wiped his hand off on his pants. “There are lots of ways he could get hurt,” he wiggled his fingers absently at Darmosk in demonstration, “Like if he tripped or something…this is pointless,” he sighed, blinking after Darmori again, having ascertained that Darmosk was not, indeed, paying attention to him. Well, whatever, he understood that Tekivisk made much better company than he did, that was fine. He could just…talk to himself. Fine. Sulk.
Er. Assault by air, what. Vix twitched visibly, and then stared down at Harmony, an expression of downright confusion on his face as Rook proceeded to use him as a personal jungle gym. “You missed,” he told Harmony bluntly, ignoring her words – because Rook did not own him, thank you very much, let alone have permission to share him with other Salamandyrs he happened to like, “Darmori went that way, you missed him by like ten seconds.” He flicked his fingers, “If you do your little gliding flying thing I’m sure you could catch up – look, didn’t I say he’d trip!”
Cue flailing. Vix really was worried, after all. Even if his roommate made him want to introduce his forehead to his palm very frequently, he still liked Darmori. A little. He could always blame Tekivisk and Rook, how dare they be so fond of Darmosk and Harmony. “You don’t need to chase moths if you’re going to hurt yourself, are you okay, you didn’t step in a hole or anything and twist your ankle, did you?” The verbal spew left his mouth as Vix dodged around Tekivisk and Darmosk to stride quickly in Darmori’s direction, restraining himself from running solely because also tripping and faceplanting would not be at all helpful.
He slowed when he got closer and saw what Darmori was gesticulating at, though, and then inhaled deeply, raising one hand to press his fingers against his temples. “Why is it you think moths are more important than your safety!” Vix finally blurted, concern leaking through the indignation in his tone. “Leave it alone, can you stand?”
Tekivisk nuzzled against Darmosk again, a happy burble rising in the green’s throat. She had absolutely no exception with his plan. It seemed more than perfect to herrrr…but oh, they’d better go see if His was okay, yes? the green added anxiously, head twisting around at the surge of irritation and fear from Vix. Tekivisk jumped to her feet, swiped her tongue across Darmosk’s shoulder lightly in reassurance that His was okay (he had to be if Vix was still yelling), and trotted towards the fallen bronzehandler. Such a funny position, and why was he pointing at the sky…?

Darmosk was paying attention to Vix. Okay, well maybe only kind of. After all his Tekivisk was cuddling with him. Only natural he pay more attention to his lovely sister. All the same he titled his head at Vix and wuffed. He tripped all the time. It only hurt a little, sometimes. Thoughts of tripping reminded him of the slight twinge of discomfort in his leg and he licked it briefly. It only hurt when he remembered after all. When Darmori actually tripped the bronze swung his head in that direction and gave a soft croon. Whoops. Clumsy his. Was he alright? The question got such a swift answer that the male was only a little concerned. Darmosk shifted slightly and tilted his head to look at Vix as he started failing. He titled his head to watch the movement with interest. Tekivisk’s was silly.
The gold remained where she was sprawled on the handler’s shoulder. Did not miss. She informed Vix with all the regal poise one would expect from her color. The large gold watched with interest as Rook proceeded to use his as some kind of playground. Amusing wasn’t he? Darmori’s trip was not missed and the gold dug her talons into the greenhandler’s shirt in response, her head snapping around to try and catch a glimpse of hers even as her eyes took on a slightly worried shade. Mori okay? She broadcasted widely before giving a chirp of indignation as her perch was suddenly moving. Quite quickly to. Harmony quieted however when she realized where Vix was heading. Good Rook’s. He made a good steed obviously. A quick lick was given the boy’s neck in response. To hers noble steed!
Darmori was still wildly gesturing and gasping a little for breath when Vix appeared to hover over him. “M’okay.” Was the bronzehandler’s breathless and elegant response as he continued to gesture at the moth. Look! Look! Moooooth. His roommates verbal scolding came as a slight surprise however and Darmori had to try and piece together the words with a head that was slightly still flustered. He dropped his hands to his chest and simply blinked as if shocked. Aww Vix did care. That made him feel happy actually. The bronzehandler had always counted his roommate as a strange friend of sorts and this only made that fact concrete. Quite purposely and carefully the boy moved both arms and then each leg one at a time. By this time the teen had pretty much regained his breath and Darmori sat up. Blinking up at Vix he grinned. “I’m okay. Nothin’s broken. I might have a bruise or two in the morning but I’ve had worse.” Rubbing the back of his neck he extended a hand towards the greenhandler. “Little help?”
Darmosk rumbled at his sister’s lick and rocked to his feet to limp after her. Coming up alongside her the bronze made sure they where touching before he dipped his head to nudge at his bonded. Silly his. He was okay yes? A smile was give the wher and Darmori briefly shoved against his large head. “Yep I’m okay guys. Sorry about that. But look!” Again he pointed up toward the Luna moth that was still fluttering above as if unsure as to where it was supposed to go. The bronze tilted his head and brushed excitedly against Tekivisk’s mind. Oh look! His had found another moth. This one was pretty to. Silly his! That was why he was sky looking!
Harmony gave a huff of disproval to the whole band. Uglies not pretty. Make fall go boom. Obviously bad. She scolded the lot of them before licking Vix’s ear. He agreed no?

Salt lick. Why was this his life?
If Vix hadn’t been a little more concerned about Darmori, he would’ve probably outright hissed at Harmony for licking him like that. He settled for making a mental note to have a stern talking-to on the cons of licking later with the gold. And Tekivisk, Rook, and Darmosk, too, for that matter. All of them. Grr. Annoying bratty touchy-feely mindmates of entirely too careless roommates that clearly needed to have babysitters watching him constantly…oh, so he was okay. He sat up, anyway, which was good, although Vix made a slight choking noise in protest at the moving of arms and legs; shouldn’t do that if there was a potential for injury—!
“You look entirely too happy for someone who just fell,” Vix grumbled indignantly, but his rant had mostly subsided; he reached out to grab Darmori’s hand, pulling the other boy back onto his feet. Tekivisk rubbed against his knees consolingly, tongue rasping across the fabric of his pants lightly. Vix glared at her, but the green seemed undeterred; she extended her neck out towards Darmori and crooned at him. Glad he was okay, was the green, it would be ever so distressing if he’d been hurt badly.
“Moth,” Vix sighed, as Darmori pointed again, and rolled his eyes upwards. Luna moth, huh. “It’s nice, I guess. Just—try not to tumble off a cliff or something in pursuit of a moth next time, okay? I don’t need a new roommate, with my luck he’d probably snore.” The words were less tense now that he was sure Darmori was okay, Vix’s hand settling onto Tekivisk’s head in an unconscious search for reassurance. The green licked his palm contentedly, peering up at the moth with bright eyes. “It’s pretty,” Vix said again, almost repeating his previous words, and glanced away awkwardly to squint at Harmony. “You planning on hopping off anytime soon…?”
Rook’s response to that was a string of unintelligible words, the general feeling of disapproval plain, the words mo’erminestay coming out nearly incoherent somewhere in the middle. Vix swatted absently at the blue, whose clambering all over him was definitely ticklish, and managed to swipe his fingertips against Tekivisk’s wing instead; the green chirruped lightly, clearly enchanted by the Luna moth – just because Hers didn’t like it didn’t mean she didn’t, because she did. Wasn’t it lovely, she commented in fascination to Darmosk, and crooned at Darmori; so nice of him to point it out to them~

Darmori’s response to Vix was just a wide grin. It was only a fall after all. Nothing terrible had happened. So in the bronze handler’s opinion it could be safely stuffed in the past. His roommate had a surprisingly strong grip the blonde noticed as he allowed himself to be hauled to his feet. Hand rubbing the back of his neck the teen gave a sheepish smile to Vix before leaning down towards the crooning green wher. “Yeah I’m okay Ki. It’s alright thanks for the concern though.” Briefly he scratched the green’s eyes ridge before he tilted his head upwards to look at the moth who was how fluttering downwards to perch on a nearby flower. “Yeah. Cliff diving after moths is a bad idea. I’ll keep that in mind.” Darmori said with a simple smile. The sentence certainly could have probably been taken for sarcastic if not for the jovial tone in which it was delivered. Yeah sarcasm was apparently lost on the bronze handler. Still he was beyond happy that Vix actually cared about him. It made this whole friends thing easier certainly.
Harmony merely fixed Vix with an amused look. Her move? No thank you she was quite comfortable and amused where she was. The gold mandyr watched her little blue zip around his bonded with all the grace of a child on a sugar high. A soft happy croon left her throat at the sight. A careful watch she was keeping on her son. This wasn’t the first time the gold had indulged her offspring and she was well aware of the end result. She did not want her little one going splat thank you very much. So no she was not moving. Not until Rook passed out anyway. With a soft trill she broadcasted for the little group to here. Stay here will. Move later. That was apparently that. She was the queen. They would have to learn to deal with that. Making herself more comfortable she tilted her head upwards slightly to view the moth with distaste before she again turned attention to the blue blur that was Rook.
Darmosk was similarly caught up in the sight of the moth and he brushed his sister’s mind with an awed affirmative. It was very lovely. Rearing up on hind legs to get a closer look the bronze crooned. He would like for it to come down but if it didn’t want to that was okay to. After a few minutes of balancing his leg protested and so the large male sunk back to the ground with a nuzzle to his sister. He liked the moths he decided. Butterflies where sure to be awesome to. Darmori backed up and smiled. “Maybe it’s not a butterfly but it sure is lovely.” Almost hesitantly he put an arm around his slightly taller roommate’s shoulder, purely so he could grab Harmony who squawked in indignation. Pulling his arm back angry squirming gold in hand he gave an awkward smile.
“Sorry bout her. She’s so used to getting her way.” Releasing the gold he listened to her hiss but smiled as she leapt to the bronze handler’s shoulder instead. Her eyes where still however trained on Rook. “Thanks for indulging me in the while butterfly thing by the way.” Darmori offered softly keeping his eyes on the moth. Maybe he didn’t have many friends but he was happy that Vix was one of them. He really was.

Vix deflated. Did Darmori haaave to be so cheerful…it made it so much harder to stay upset at him, suicidal tendencies—because clearly tripping could equate to instant death, never mind that there was a more than plentiful cushion of flowers underfoot—or not. He sighed, shrugging one shoulder; he gave up—on Darmori not taking his fall seriously and on removing Harmony from his immediate person. Clearly the gold didn’t understand that one miniature terror was one more than he needed, ever, or wanted, ever. “Just so long you remember,” he muttered, not quite content to just let it go.
But it didn’t really matter, he supposed. They’d found a lunar moth—the butterfly net was clasped loosely, forgotten, in his fingers—and it was positively enchanting to Tekivisk, who bumped her muzzle against his leg in a show of delighted affection before she turned and rubbed her head against Darmosk’s shoulder, a rumbling low purr hitching from her throat. Sooo happy, such a pretty night and such a pretty moth and such lovely company. She blinked her eyes closed contentedly, rooting herself against Vix’s leg. Could stay out here all night…
“Er,” Vix said awkwardly, half-lidded gaze snapping back to Darmori in utter bewilderment, the greenhandler stiffening slightly at the arm draped over his shoulders. It wasn’t that he didn’t like being touched—the way he clung to things when he slept, be it pillow, wher, or person, was proof enough of that, though Vix was fairly certain only Tekivisk knew that, and maybe Kostya—it was just utterly unexpected. And also, Vix was decidedly thrown as to how he was supposed to respond to that, just take it in stride or—or. He blinked as Harmony as swept from his shoulder, Rook squeaking an indignant protest from somewhere between his shoulder blades.
“Ah,” he stated, and blinked at Darmori uncomfortably. He wasn’t really sure how to respond to that, either. It wasn’t like he hated it, whatever it was they’d been doing—playing, maybe. He didn’t, maybe even liked it a little, though it wasn’t something Vix was ever going to admit—if anyone asked, it was for Darmori and the whers, that was all—“’S fine. I don’t have anything else to do. I mean…it was fine. Fun,” he corrected himself, and wrinkled his nose at the badly hidden embarrassment in the words.
Nineteen Turn-old males shouldn’t find it fun to chase butterflies, he was pretty sure. Even if they were Bonded to baby whers, green ones that liked to play and make friends—it just wasn’t done. Except when it was, apparently.

Darmosk gave a happy huff as he looked up at the moth then and leaned into Tekivisk’s caress. Yes he could stay out here all night as well. Maybe they should. Then when the sun started to come up they could look for the illusive butterflies. The large bronze butted his head against his bonded’s hip, seeking a caress before he to lidded his eyes, the picture of perfect contentment. The night obviously couldn’t get any better. Unless a butterfly like mysteriously appeared or something.
Darmori listened intently to Vix before another grin came over his face. All and all this ranked up with some of the best nights in his life. Perhaps that would be a sad thought to anyone else, but not the ex drudge. In the end his young life hadn’t been the easiest, or the happiest, or the most normal. So thus he appreciated the tiny little things better than most other people. Moths, the whers, the mandyrs, and his friend Vix. Everything was simple. Yep night couldn’t get any better. If Darmori noticed the stiffening the other handler didn’t comment on it. Instead he looked up at the moth above. “Yeah it’s been a blast. We’ll have to do this more often.” As the words finished Darmori took a deep breath of the flower scented air and closed his eyes.
Two enthusiastic agreements followed. A croon from Darmosk and a Yes! from Harmony. Maybe next time they could do something better than chasing moths. Although. Chasing moths was obviously the best thing ever at the moment.
{End Thread}
