Eikask watched the interactions between the other whers carefully. She was mildly annoyed by what she saw going on between her blue and her clutchsister. The gold was arrogant enough not to believe it anything serious - yet. Besides, one of the bronzes actually decided to show up and she gave a croon of greeting in return for the bronze's. It wasn't the shiny factor that encouraged her to treat the bronze special. In truth, she greeted browns the same way...there were just so few of them that it tended not to show.
The gold turned her attention to Dmisk's Loud One. He was still - and likely always would be - the Loud One to her. The conversation quickly bored her though and the lack of attention on her was annoying. Yes, yes. Words, words, words. That didn't mean anything to Eikask. They needed actual action. Too often did others talk but not act upon what they said and that genuinely bothered the gold. When she said she would do something she did it. In fact, the only reason she hadn't organized this meeting herself was because Hers had chosen to stall. She listened but only partially.
Eikane smiled at Nautic as he finally joined them. He scooted a little closer when the greenhandler took up a position between him and Yoalla. He wasn't normally one for public displays of affection so closing the distance a little would have to do, at least from his end. The goldhandler was considerably more attentive to his wher and he nodded every now and then to indicate that he was listening. At mention of Eikask running he muttered under his breath, "Won't that be fun." He wasn't looking forward to it. Ultimately, he was holdbred and a turn or so in a weyr wasn't enough to shake his ideals.
After a couple ofthe others spoke up Eikane figured it was his turn. "Mm, my thanks for setting up this meeting Dmitri, Dmisk, and Quintresk." He didn't bother mentioning that he would have got his own butt in gear. Unnecessary. He and his wher communicated silently for a second and agreed on one thing. "We're in. I can defend myself if I need to. I can also research and record." Any Harper worth his knots could do that much. "Eikask can glide." Given he'd told her to keep quite about that ability he didn't elaborate on how well. Suffice it to say that if she ran off a cliff she would be perfectly fine...Sorry Yoalla.

"I'd like to touch on what Piden said." Stepping forward slightly he gestured with his hands. "Selenitas is huge. Take a minute to think about it. We have about three different levels that will need to be patrolled, plus a good way into the jungle around the 'visible' edges. And what, there are only seven of us in total? I don't believe we have enough to start this off in pairs. But, I think once we have Wherlings that it could change." Turning he glanced at everyone with a smile, ending on Dmitri. "My suggestion is to pair the Wherlings up with an "experienced" patrol pair in the later stages of training. I mean, by the time they will reach that point, those of us here will have..." He looked up as he calculated, "... near to a Turn of fieldwork under our belts?" Nautic shrugged slightly and fluttered his fingers at his Wher, who had made a trilling noise. "Of course, it all depends on how much land we want each Wherpair to cover. Just saying."
"Although, now with that said, you can count Nautsk and I in. But I cannot attest to our ability to fight. I honestly do not think my Nautsk could bring harm upon an intruder, except maybe if I was seriously hurt." Taking a step back he leaned against the outside of Eikane's arm, he crossed his own across his chest. "I can help file and organize patrol reports as well as any other busy paperwork required in helping run the patrol. I can also do research. I've been working on a Wher-based research paper for the last half a Turn, what I've collected so far should be of some use... hopefully." In truth he was happy that everyone was willing to be a part of the new Night-Watch. Pulling at the edge of his elbow brace, Nautic tapped the toe of one of his boots on the ground. He was done talking now, not that he had minded everyone looking at him when he had gone off on his relevant tangent. The Greenrider was seriously considering becoming a Player one of these days. "Oh! I almost forgot. I have sewing skills, so, if we decide to make some kind of Identifying uniform or something leave that all to me." Tizzy had fallen asleep around Nautic's neck, but Absinthe was busy listening to both the Silly humans and the annoying Whers speak. What they were proposing was interesting, and possibly could benefit her in the future.
When Yosk sat beside her, Nautsk chirped happily at her. Wasn't this exciting? Fluttering her comparatively stubby wings, the smaller Green crossed her front ankles and bobbed her head to some unknown rhythm listening to the humans talk. She swung her gaze onto Nautic when he began to speak. Oh it was true! She couldn't hurt anyone else. Because hurting made people sad and angry, she simply couldn't stand causing anyone to leak water! Swishing her tail from side to side, Nautsk crooned. You know, other than that she was definitely more than happy to help! She wanted to do her part too. She didn't want Her's to do everything. She could even help raise the babies! But the Green kept that suggestion to herself, Nautsk didn't yet know if the shining, Goldqueen Eikask would let her near her eggs.
Babies, babies, oh the hatchlings! Wouldn't it be lovely when there were small little Wherlings running around the apartments? She could teach them games and share pretty places with them! Nautsk didn't see why Roisk would mind if she helped him entertain the littles, plus he was big. He could scare the littles when he tried to teach them hunting games or tag. She was small and green, they were bound to like her! She wiggled in joy at the thought. But wait! She needed to focus. They were at a meeting, and they were talking about big things. Like, the future... and other things. Twitching the tip of her tail up and down Nautsk did her best to reign in her wily thoughts.

The blue brushed Yosk's mind with a hint of regret. He'd love to fly with her, he would, and he'd try, but he feared his body was probably too heavy for his wings to manage like Yosk could. Dmisk tilted his head to listen to Quintresk for a long moment, the two whers communicating briskly betwixt themselves. Dmitri's eyes flicked briefly in their direction. He supposed Dmisk would tell him if he needed to know...wasn't as if he was trying to pretend it wasn't them directing the show, anyway. All he could figure was they were discussing the answers given them by the other handlers.
Listening to Piden, Dmitri made no comment. What was the point really in saying you'd thought about or discussed something this late? Not that he cared. More than willing to let the bronzehandler take the reins, though Dmisk and Quintresk didn't seem that ready to yield to their bronze cousin. Just one meeting, huh? That he hadn't known. Not that it really mattered in the long run; no matter who led or how it was organized, the Night Watch was needed. Electing not to answer anyone, he listened to each response placidly. Yoalla. A slight twitch of the lips into a flicker of a half-smile. Eikane's politeness was odd, though the brief words were met with Dmitri's gratitude. Nautic earned a wrinkling of his nose.
"One of you will have to learn, at any rate. Can't very well expect someone not to attack simply because you don't want to hurt them or don't know how," he responded to Nautic, with no real bite. "Though I think you and Piden both are right. Wandering alone has its dangers. But Selenitas also is big. We'll have to test out a few things, I think, before deciding what works best. As for uniforms...I'll let you decide that. Quintresk and Dmisk could care less." Eyeing them all for several moments, he then smiled slightly. "Seems like everyone's in, then, Piden. I don't know if Yosk can teach any of the other whers to fly...but if she can that would be an asset. We're working with five as far as patrols go. For now. Yoalla, Piden and Eikane can show the rest of us who know nothing how not to get our asses handed to us."
What else? "We should meet outside the apartments, atop the cliff, in the early evening every night. Eliminate the one-time meeting issue. Anyone have any further suggestions for tonight or do you just want to meet again tomorrow?"

Once Dmitri was done, Piden waited a few moments before speaking up again. The bronzehandler might not be a particularly good follower, but he certainly had no desire to be a leader, either, especially not if he'd have to fight Dmitri, Dmisk, and Quintresk for it the whole way (or maybe just the Whers, he wasn't 100% sure who was actually running the show here). Ideally, he'd just be on his own. But no one else was speaking up, and that shiny bulk next to him shifted, wordlessly drawing Piden's eyes to Pidesk's bronzey racing stripe. An accident of birth, maybe, but there was no getting around it now, especially if the other Handlers were too shy to speak up, or had nothing to say.
Pidesk reinforced Piden's decision quite strongly, radiating a need to protect and a dislike of inaction. Despite Pidesk's generally passive nature, things related to his home and his adopted siblings could really whip him into a frenzy. So without further ado, Piden addressed Dmitri, trying not to sound like he was taking over. "I think meeting nightly is a good idea, even if we only check in. I'll work with Pidesk over the next week and figure out exactly what it is I want to teach, and then we can set up a schedule of lessons or something. If the rest of you who have Wher-related skills - Yoalla, Eikane - want to put together lessons too, that would be good. Or maybe one-on-one would work better, whatever." Nautic was already assigned to uniforms (excellent idea, Piden thought), no need to repeat it.
Argh, he'd really meant to just come and listen, not talk this much. Stupid Pidesk, being old and bronze, and U'un for disappearing. Stupid brain, coming up with ideas he didn't want. Stupid stupid stupid. But he had been thinking about the Night Watch, and now that someone else was interested it seemed he couldn't make his brain stop working. Well, he could go home and think all he wanted; for now, there was one last thing that the old Night Watch had had that this one didn't, yet. "Dmitri, Eikane. You're both Harpers, right?" He plowed on without really waiting for an affirmative, "The old Night Watch had a pack call. Do you remember it, Pidesk?" he asked, turning toward his Wher. Pidesk made an odd, keening call, before dropping his eyes and shaking his head. It had been years since he'd even thought about it; he didn't remember.
"No problem. It would give us more flexibility in terms of patrolling the whole Weyr if we had a series of specific calls that all the Whers know and can identify. Danger, intruder, all clear, that sort of thing. That might be something the two of you could work on over the next week or so, and start teaching to the rest of us." Pidesk sniffed - Whers could make themselves understood to their brethren without human intervention. "Kind of like a code," Piden added, clarifying for Pidesk. "So other Whers and Dragons won't know what we're talking about.
"Sound good?" he finished. "So we'll check in every night, then next week we'll have some progress. Solutions to the under-staffing issue are always welcome, too," he added wryly, then looked back at Dmitri. The Bluehandler and the two Whers could close out the gathering, as far as Piden was concerned. He refused to say anything else tonight.
