Nose poked! Well really she should have seen that one coming, it wasn't like the harper was just going to let her go without retaliation. To be honest, she preferred it that way, when she dished it out her first sign that it was appreciated was when it was served right back to her. Hopefully things wouldn't spiral too far out of control however, and the girl went ahead and balled up a first to give Dmitri a friendly smack in the arm. There! Now he could feel the full force of all that strength of hers! Never underestimate was a month or so of weyrling training could do for a body.
But it still seemed that all of her fraudulent claims were just getting picked apart. How unfair, couldn't a girl catch a break and just have a few little hyperboles to hang onto for fun? Apparently not, as Demi was hell bent on proving her wrong. She narrowed her eyes on him despite the playfulness dancing upon the corners of her lips and then held her fingertips up to her temples as if she had begun the secret practice of mindreading. There was even a small hum as she tried to conjure up his thoughts...you know it would be all so much easier if he had just picked a number between one and ten but...
Her eyes popped open as the words came to her mouth.
"It's a trick! Why should I prove to you what I can or can't do? Really if anything I should just keep my mouth shut to keep you guessing," then by complete coincidence she did manage to mention what the wherhandler was thinking about, and she made her off the cuff reference to the fish on the fire, "By the way, I really hope that our food isn't burning. I'm not sure that if we were to crash the feast there would be much of anything left for us...weyr full of gluttons I tell you," not that she was ever witness to anyone stuffing their face, but she did notice that the place was bountiful and they were never short of throwing feasts for every single moment of celebration.
She took another sip of her cider and glanced over at the fire. Interesting. He was looking at the peacefulness of the waves, their ebb and flow under the moonlight. Yet she was entranced instead by the flame and the explosions of embers flying up and dissipating into ashes. Surely one could make something of the juxtaposition, but why bother? Ruin a perfectly good sort of moment that way.

The young man’s eyes narrowed when she punched his arm, but if she was expecting a punch in return, she was bound to be disappointed. Dmitri fully intended to get her back in a much more…satisfying…way. Let her think she’d gotten away with it. He was tempted to comment that she very definitely hit like a girl, though.
He laughed outright at her mention of the fish. “That had to be a lucky guess.” Still, he wasn’t in so great a hurry that he didn’t pause a moment to admire the night before moving to check the fish. Dmitri passed the blade of his knife through the fire first. Didn’t know much about cooking, but he did know enough to keep the blade clean. Dementia was slid into a pocket as he crouched so she didn’t accidentally slide off his hand. Needed them both free anyway. Slicing into the fish a little, there was no sign of blood.
A minute later he was handing Raebeli a plate of fish and the bed of greens he’d cooked the meat on. “Your prediction didn’t come true; they’re not overcooked,” he stated mildly. Dmitri settled back into place. He watched her with something of an amused look, waiting to see how well she’d take to eating the fish with her hands. The wherhandler certainly had no qualms about it. He picked apart the meat delicately with his fingers and popped a piece into his mouth. Well. Not too bad, actually. Cooks in the Main Hall did it better, but definitely was edible. He allowed himself a small smile of satisfaction.
“So, what do you think? Is it good enough to rescue all the poor starving people who don’t get to the dining hall quick enough? Those Selenitas gluttons you spoke of are such a menace, after all,” he concluded teasingly. He reached up to scratch the tip of his nose, hiding the slowly growing smile behind the gesture. “I rather think the reason you won’t prove anything is there’s nothing there to prove. How disappointing. Here I’d been certain you were some sort of mystic who could solve all my problems. Like…” Here he glanced around, as if making absolutely certain that no one was around to overhear. “I’ve got this…problem. It’s really quite serious.”
Of course, then he must have thought better about saying it. His gaze went to the hands that now rested in his lap. He let a wry chuckle escape his lips and waved his hand through the air.

She was taking solace in the fact that she had somehow weaseled her way out of that whole mind reading bit when she stalled for a moment and felt her jaw slightly drop in surprise. What the? She knew she had to quickly cover up the surprise and shake her head in denial. No, no, of course it wasn't a lucky guess, it was for reals! As far as Raebeli was concerned she had successfully read the mind of her wherhandling companion, "Hmmm...oh no no....I saw it in your eyes m'dear. But if it makes you feel better we can say that it was just a lucky guess," she winked at him cheekily and clasped her hands together excitedly for the prospect of food.
Of course this motion was replaced quickly by open hands to receive the plate and paused for a moment to stare at Demi. Was there no forks? Did he manage to remember everything except for basic utensils? She cocked her head as she caught on muttering, "Oh Demi..." before daring to scoop up a chunk of the fish with her nimble little fingers. Sure, the behavior didn't seem to match her typically girly persona, but then this was Rae, and she was a very odd girl. If she could find no qualms shaving her legs with chef knives then she most likely wouldn't fault Dmitri for making her eat with her hands.
Besides, it wasn't like the fish wasn't worth it. The mindhealer thought it was rather good, but she wasn't really a connoisseur or critic by any means and half of her tastebuds were marveling over the mere fact that this was unburnt food as opposed to anything else. Which of course meant that she was going to tell him that this was the greatest thing ever, "Delicious. It will save the starving children of the south for sure, or at least the small population of starving mindhealers." Scarfing down another mouthful, she was lightly chewing when he mentioned his very serious issue, and so surprised she was he was that he would even suggest he had one, she blurted out with her mouth full, "REALLY!?"
Oh wait! Social graces. She swallowed down the bite and leaned forward again, practically wiggling with excitement as she reiterated her statement, "Don't tease me so... I want to solve your problems, mystical magic powers or not!"

It was all he could do, really, not to laugh outright at her expression when she realized that she would have to eat with her hands. Dmitri was rather proud of himself. It was more than obvious that this was so when he produced a fork and flipped it onto her plate. The harper didn't bother with one himself, though, more than content to just pick apart the warm meat with his fingers. So sue him. He'd taken to this outdoorsy life (finally) and was gladly setting some of those prim and proper mannerisms aside. He'd always found Fort Hold and playing the political game rather...suffocating. Especially considering how it had turned out.
Really, she was too nice about his attempt at cooking. Not that he was going to complain. At any rate, her reaction to his comment received the entirety of his attention. His eyes went wide, hand suspended halfway to his mouth. Even with Erilena around he just wasn't used to quite that level of enthusiasm. (Granted, Erilena was most definitely in something of a funk here lately so she probably wasn't the best person to use as a comparison.)
His dark eyes turned away from her for a moment. "Well, I don't know. I think you'd probably need some special magic powers for this one," he half-murmured. He then took the time to take a sip of his cider, making the woman wait. Dmitri definitely knew how to make a person wait. "Someone's kind of...been bullying me, to be quite honest. There's nothing I can do about it. You know how pathetic I am. I mean, you beat me up earlier, didn't you?" A flicker of amusement betrayed him then. He still found that rather funny.
"Surely you have some good advice. I don't really want to get someone else to fight my battles for me, but I worry how far it will progress if I just try to ignore it. Some of these northerners can be really ruthless, you know."

A flying fork! She tilted the plate so that the utensil wouldn't sputter off the side and for that moment was completely distracted from Demi's little predicament. Of course, that couldn't last for long. As spacey as the woman could be - and she was very - she was incredibly determined to help her friend, admittedly not just because helping was the very essence of most friendships, but because she just had to prove to him that she wasn't just a crack pot. She did do things and she did learn in her discipline.
Swallowing her mouthful and washing it down with a long draw on the cup of cider, she began to consider where to start. After all, a bully isn't exactly what she was expecting, and typically the only time she encountered that was with the little weyrbrats squabbling over their games in the courtyard. That wasn't to say that harassment died with the coming of puberty, but it did become more subtle, more insidious, and that much harder to pin down and dissect. Since it didn't seem like her companion was going to reveal any details about whom this mystery perpetrator was, she was just going to have to guess...and use those before mentioned weyrbrats as any example.
"Well, there is a lot to say about bullies...and a lot more to understand still," admittedly this was never her specialization, and lately ninety percent of what she dealt with was girls, trauma, and their Impressions. It was good to have a change though, "the interesting thing is that no two bullies are the same, and without a little more information," wink, wink, "it's hard to put together an answer. You see some bullies my dear Demi will conveniently shift between aggressor and victim..." she waved her hand in a fluid gesture to represent a flowing continuum between the two stages.
"As such every bully has different motives... but a lot of them do it out of narcissism, and in their self absorption, they don't even think that they are hurting you, because they don't think that you are even suffering," she bobbed her head a little bit and smiled, "Add to that the heritage of your particular bully and we can see that they very well might have been raised in a place where aggression was not only accepted but encouraged. So my best advice is to avoid the person, but Im sure you've thought of that yourself. My second best advice is maybe not to to attack them back, you'll never win in an argument with someone who thinks they are never wrong."
This was a pickle wasn't it? "How about you just act like they don't mean anything to you... attention seekers hate that."

He hadn't quite expected the wealth of information that Raebeli assaulted him with directly after his admission. In fact, he found it highly intriguing and nearly forgot where he'd been going with the conversation to begin with. (Dmitri really hadn't spent a lot of time contemplating the dynamics of bullies and victims. He was rather hard to bully and not given to anything more than snide comments himself.)
"Hm," he contemplated. This was something of a pickle. "Well...I guess the problem is I kind of...like...this bully a little." Ignoring them wasn't really the best of options when he still wanted to be around them. Call it his tragic history or a masochistic streak, but he found strength rather attractive. See: Elysia. Most people would say he was insane and looking for pain, getting involved with her.
As a sidenote, he had to wonder if he wasn't something of a bully himself. No one ever won an argument with him after all. Heh. His eyes flicked to the flames. "Sometimes not giving people any attention works. But sometimes it just results in them doing more extreme things to get it. That wouldn't be very good, I don't think."
He sighed then. "See? It's really rather a quandary. I fear for my mental and physical health, but I don't want to write her off, either. Are you sure there aren't any other options? Anything I might should say to her that could help?"

She was disappointed in him, but only because she was his friend. The patients...they didn't conjure such feelings in her, but she wouldn't help but feel somehow affronted by his revelation. And here this whole time she had been thinking of Dmitri as something better than that; how could it be that he liked something that hurt him so? In love with his own abuser... what an unfortunate path to wander down, and worst part of it all was that in his description...in his use of her she had an inkling that he knew who this bully was. Sure, maybe she was being paranoid. Jumping to conclusions you could say, but that didn't stop her from mental blurting, Great. Just great.
It was enough to unexpectedly arouse Quixoth, and the green's eyes flicked open with a croon. What ever could it be that would disruptive the constant stream of happy that usually flowed from the little healer woman. Words were not swapped, and the weyrling did little in the way of even flinching, but she was listening along with a new sense of dubiousness towards her dearest Raebeli's old friend. Silently the mindhealer had to hush any suspicions while trying to juggle the issue of how to react. She didn't want to say the absolute truth after all... the stray un-Rae-like thought that rang You dimglow!
Ever pleasant. Ever cool in the face of all situations... she was not a reactionary creature and would never be accused of flying off the handle about anything. Nodding and tapping her chin she tried for something even keeled, something that would be decent to say to a friend, "I'm not sure you really are fearing enough for your mental or physical health if you are that worried about hurting her feelings Demi. If it was a clear cut either or choice what would you pick? Either way you're going to regret the decision right? That's what humans do, dwell on the path they didn't take..." she was digressing, and pulled it back together after a heavy sigh, "I don't know your situation. Have you ever told this person the truth? About what they do to you? I..." admittedly didn't have all the answers, "will have to think on this a little bit."
Well, at least the fish still tasted pretty good.

Oh this was definitely priceless. (He wasn't sure what thought was going through her head, because she was doing a really good job of keeping her face controlled, but the sudden control was indication enough that she'd come to some rather serious conclusions.) Dmitri really should feel a bit ashamed for this one. Should. Instead he was keeping his face just as neutral as Raebeli was.
The handler scrunched up his face, clearly considering what it was that Raebeli had just suggested. "Hurting her feelings?" He snorted softly at that. "Oh, I doubt I could. She seems quite indomitable. Really I just enjoy her company too much." Dragging this out for his own amusement now. He settled his elbows on his knees and laced his fingers together, resting his chin on the joined hands.
So then it came down to the truth, right? He suppressed a small smile. Scooting over toward her a little, he touched Raebeli's arm. "Raebeli." Then, because he felt a shifting in his pocket that alerted him to a gold about to protest to his not following her directions: "Belle. I really do enjoy your company, but you just tease me constantly. My poor feelings can't handle it." He pouted slightly.
"And, on top of that, you beat me. Beat me loopy. Something must be done about this." By now he was grinning broadly, unable to contain it anymore. (So yes, maybe that was just a little evil, but she'd so been asking for it. Miss Tease.

The whole spiel about never flying off the handle? That was most definitely being put to the test right now, as her jaw dropped in response and she fought every impulse that said that she needed to beat him up. She was well aware of how contrary that would be though, and instead let her anger bubble over the fact that he was calling her a bully. No, not that he had managed to trick her into calling herself a narcissist in the process, or accused her of teasing him relentlessly - really now she didn't think she was that horrible about it - but simply at the fact that she was wrongly being designated a bully.
If she were to think about it for a moment she'd also realize that he was nice enough to say that he enjoyed spending time with her, but that was all lost in his big elaborate prank he just pulled and really all she could must was a sort of exasperated meeping sound as a hand coyly came to her chest. The expression said it all, Who me? Before her eyes slid from side to side to try and find some support in all of this. As if there would just be some kind of chorus of agreement for her there on the beach.... nice try though.
Pinching her face back together, she retaliated with only the most extreme of responses: a bratty sort of declaration of, "You goober!" Before taking even greater measures... yes, fear the wrath of the ultimate bully, Raebeli the Renowned. "How do you like this for bullying?" that fork of his was then turned into a catapult and she began flinging some flakes of fish at his face with remorseless giggling. She was ultimately humored by it all... it was best to really just laugh at yourself, and in the end she surrendered to this fact. As far as Raebeli was concerned, Demi, despite his impudence was for the most part her favorite little mensch.

Jaw drop for the win! He'd definitely scored a direct hit on that one, and there was no possible way that the harper could suppress his smug smirk now. Raebeli clearly hadn't seen that one coming at all. He could only imagine how irritated she must be, given her rather unattractive descriptors of the so-called 'bully.' Really, like Dmitri was the sort to whine about bullying. Silly mindhealer.
Shards, but he loved her reactions though.
Even when she started flinging lovely little fish pieces at him, all it got out of the harper was a rather hearty laugh as he attempted to fend them off with one hand. (Not a highly successful endeavor.) But, oh, she wasn't about to be allowed to just fling fish at him without any retaliation whatsoever. Oh no. Things simply didn't work that way with Dmitri.
"And now throwing things at me, too. Really, Belle. I am shocked and dismayed. How is this going to enhance our longterm relationship? You should be giving me warm fuzzies, not cold pricklies." Leaning forward, he caught her wrist and tugged her over so he could immobilize those treacherous hands of hers. "I made that fish for eating not swimming through the dirt. Come on now."

"Its really a vicious cycle though isn't it? I think I recall you getting flour ALLL over me...and then pushing me into the river to wash me out. We are in love with the abuse I swear... we should both be committed indefinitely..." and she managed to fling one more piece of fish before her fun was all ended.
Eeeep! She was pleased as she was with the fact that Demi could only avoid so much fish, but he definitely won with the grip on around her wrists. Yeah, so all she could do in the way of retaliation at this point was stick out her tongue, but its not like she had much else planned anyway. It was much too hard when he had her blushing, "Warm fuzzies? What like a hug? I never thought of you as a man who had a thing for hugs..." Had she ever hugged him before? She wasn't quite sure, not when whacking over the head seemed to overshadow all other interactions. She leaned into the way he pulled her forward and pushed all her energy into it. Sure her plate would surely slip off her lap onto the ground, but it was just a sacrifice that would have to be made in the process of capturing him in a tackle hug.

Now that he had her wrists fully secure, he was about to comment on the 'flour' incident when her words tipped him off to yet another dirty trick. Of course, he didn't figure it out in quite enough time to do that much about it. This resulted in the combined strength of her lunge and his yank crashing into his chest. Dmitri grunted in surprise and managed to prove just how graceful he was by toppling straight over backwards off the log.
The bluehandler was left breathless for a moment, his legs still curled up over the log and Raebeli held on top of him. His arms had gone around her in an instinctive protective gesture. Dmitri hadn't yet really noticed that he was more or less hugging the mindhealer; he was still attempting to catch his breath. "I'm adding sneak attacks to your list of transgressions," he informed her.
"And anyway, as I remember it, you were busy trying to burn down the entire Main Hall with a pot of water. The flour was entirely for your own safety." The young man wrinkled his nose and blew one of her strands of hair from his face. It seemed that this was the moment that he finally realized he was holding Raebeli. A flush crept up his neck and the boy released her, awkwardly setting his arms down at his sides after they hovered for a few moments while he tried to figure out where to put them.
"You got your hug," he added. An attempt at humor.

"Oof."
She said it entirely too cutely, but the exasperated noise was not in anyway fabricated. The mindhealer had no intent of knocking him - and in turn, herself - over in the process, but nonetheless there they were toppling over the backside of the log and onto the ground. At very least Raebeli had the luxury of her fall being broken; her face was buried into Demi's chest and arms secured by way of the wherhandler's.... hug thing. That was the only way she could describe it since she was sure that it was one part instinct, another part necessity, and then two parts just plain sweet. She would have just stayed there in that perceived safety, just listening and tittering at the man's comeback had she not heard Quixoth shift and pad over to them.
The weyrling very calmly nosed at her bonded, sort of inwardly laughing at the clumsiness. Really now? You two are worse than the newly hatched...stumbling around like this... The green waited for Rae to turn her head and their eyes to meet before inquiring further, Are you alright Raelove? "Oh believe me, Demi took the brunt of the fall..." She turned her attention to the boy, feeling his breath shoo her hair from his face and spotting the rosy tinge of a blush on his face.
She really wouldn't have thought much of it if he wasn't so stunted in his movements... allowing his hands to hover there and then adding a bit of his own brand of funny there on the side. Hmmmm, "Well since I am a bully, I should point out that you sir were blushing," and no she wasn't getting up, "Demi you are so cute with your pretty pretty cheeks all pink~" She poked him on the nose again before rolling off to the side.

Okay, so it was probably silly. Scratch that. It was definitely silly. Nevertheless, he couldn't help the sudden nervousness when the baby dragon approached them. Even baby dragons could be pretty dangerous. If for some reason the green got the impression he was attacking Hers...So, yeah, Dmitri was still pretty weird about dragons. He forced himself to stop thinking like a cornered rabbit as Rae spoke aloud and made it clear that Quixoth was merely asking after her.
"She weighs more than she thinks she does," the harper added dramatically to the mindhealer's response. That sort of comment was a slappable offense. So naturally he stuck out his tongue to further provoke her. The boy was just so mature.
He'd nearly forgotten about the blush until Raebeli brought it up. His eyes narrowed in a display of ill humor - and the blush that had nearly completely faded flared right back up. Lovely. "If I had a sixteenth mark for every time someone said I was cute..." he muttered. The harper 'helped' her off him by giving her a little push, then scooched back enough to lift his legs and set them down properly behind the log so they weren't sticking up in the air anymore.
"Not playing at all fair, bully. We're going to end up using that pot a lot sooner than expected, too, if you keep insisting on throwing the food I made you around." He flicked her arm.

And now for a shameless moment of self promotion, "Ah, but you don't have a sixteenth mark for every time its been said, and besides my words are so much more valuable the average person's. You should be collecting at least an eight mark for every time that I say it..." she flittered her eyelashes and pursed her lips together to cop a fake attitude with the man. Really it was her impression of a "sassy" girl, but she wasn't sure how well she was pulling it off. Not that she really cared, Raebeli was not exactly the most self conscious person around, how could she be and remain such a free spirit as it were.
It was this same sort of healthy image of herself that only made her snort at Demi's insistence that she was heavier than she appeared. Shards yes she was heavy! Had to be a whole one hundred something pound force of pure muscles baby! And everyone knew that muscle was a whole lot more dense than fat was. Couldn't insult her that way if he tried. She merely pulled her legs into her body and wrapped her arms around her shins while Quixoth - who was content enough with her human's reactions - thoughtfully padded over to a spot behind the two of them. Close enough to be a pillow if she really had to be.
"Oh yes the pot. I almost forgot about it," she wondered exactly what his plans were for it if it wasn't for the fish, and her eyes naturally drifted over to it. She wasn't going to ask explicitly about it, but the notion was most definitely implied, why ever are you threatening me with a pot? You threaten with scrolls yes? He is going to do the same or.... no! He is going to stick it right over your head, but I am afraid he is in trouble. Yours is much to big for that little thing.. I wonder Raelove...when you read other people's heads do you think it makes your bigger? The mindhealer was amused, "You're a goof Quixoth. Of course not..." she leaned over to fill in her friend, "she seems to think that my head is swelling from all of those mind powers I have...."
