Ferneth grinned as he noticed the impact that mentioning Meira had. He was glad that she'd Impressed, all the other candidates too. Sure it meant a rather empty rotation but Kemma could easily fix that. At least anyone from his rotation he wouldn't have gotten along with had become wherhandlers anyways. He did wonder what whers that Piden and Derrin got. He only knew them a little but he did know them. He wouldn't visit them like he planned to visit Meira though. When exactly would that be? He had no idea when he'd feel up to that or get the time to either. He turned his attention back to Muta when he spoke again.
Ferny grinned but didn't comment on that. His eyes widened in surprise. The first salamandyr came from a firelizard clutch? They were such different creatures though. "I bet. It probably seemed like some kind of mutant firelizard," he said thoughtfully. If they were prone to stealing things he could see why they would be considered pests by his fellow candidate. "Hopefully it stays that way. I don't need some tiny lizard making off with my stuff." Ferneth would likely track down the 'mandyr that took anything of his. He didn't have much at the weyr, but the stuff he did have had some meaning to him.
The young man nodded silently. Yes, it wasn't a matter of 'if' anymore. The unfortunate truth no matter how much he wanted to avoid it. It was a real shame that Benden in particular wanted to involve the small southern weyr. They'd never done anything to them...oh, well minus sheltering one of their queenriders. He wondered if that was the only reason they chose to attack them. If so that dragonpair had caused much trouble. Too late now, and she and her gold were no doubt a part of Selenitas now.
Ferneth winced slightly. Oops. He hadn't meant to antagonize the other lad. He decided to joke about it. "Oh really? I never would have guessed!" Truthfully, it had been a bit of scolding. He was too used to younger siblings still. Two fights were understandable. Ferny remembered a tussle he'd had with his brother once. What was it that had them fighting? It seemed so silly now that he was older. He chuckled slightly but, remembering his company, covered it up with a cough hastily.

"Not so sure they aren't some sort of mutant firelizard," Mutasim agreed, in a tone that was quite amiable for him. He straightened for a moment, presaging the appearance of Jabari, who came out of Between with a happy croon and circled the shoulders of his humanpet before settling in Muta's lap. The candidate set to stroking the brown without taking his eyes off Ferneth. "Oh, some firelizards will steal as well, but it seems to be worse with 'mandyrs. At least, they seem to cause more of a commotion by it, at any rate. I'm sure we'll know if any get to thieving around here, though." He shook his head and let out a long-suffering sigh.
One of the candidate's eyebrows rose clear to his hairline. He couldn't tell what Ferneth's comment was referencing, although he was fairly certain that he was being mocked somewhere in there. Mutasim could say whatever he wanted about himself, but he didn't take too kindly to people belittling him. Nor did he bother to analyze that particular personality trait. There could be any number of reasons for that - although most likely it had something to do with the combination of all of them. Regardless, he thought he liked it better when Ferneth was afraid of him and walking on eggshells. At least then he wouldn't have to resist the urge to 'play' with the other boy and recreate that fear of before.
Bitra still had its claws sunk firmly in his soul, didn't it?
Mutasim forced a smile. It didn't reach his eyes, though, turning it into something cold and distinctly predatory as opposed to achieving the desired effect. "You'd think I'd be used to sarcasm by now," the boy stated dryly, not bothering to elaborate. It should be clear enough that he'd taken offense. If Ferneth couldn't pick that up from the words themselves, the candidate deserved whatever consequences he reaped. Jabari's head had come about to regard Ferneth curiously, his head turning so that he could get a good look at both his humanpet and the other. He chirped questioningly.
The laughing definitely wasn't helping. "I'm sure you can find something more...amusing...somewhere else," the candidate stated coldly, his dark eyes narrowing dangerously. He didn't go so far as to touch any of the daggers arrayed about him, but a sense of impending violence beat on the air. Nevermind that it was mostly just an air that Mutasim had developed over turns of creating a nasty reputation - that he then had to be prepared to back up. The likelihood that the candidate would actually attack Ferneth was quite slim. Especially now. That did little to diminish the dark aura he gathered around himself like a cloak, however.

Ferneth frowned slightly. They looked different enough from firelizards that he considered them a new breed rather than just a variation. Plus they could talk. The sudden appearance of Muta's brown firelizard made for a good distraction. He watched as Mutasim stroked him. Ferny's eyes met the other boy's when he spoke again. "So long as they don't get into the chests we have I don't think we really have to worry about thievery from firelizards or salamandyrs," he pointed out. He especially doubted a 'mandyr could get in one. A firelizard...the lids on those chests might be too heavy for them to lift anyways.
The taller lad had meant no insult to his teacher but there was little he could do about it after he'd said whatever ticked Mutasim off. He remained blissfully unaware of the others' anger for a moment. He was thinking again about the firelizard clutch. Hatchings of any sort often occupied Ferneth's mind. He was a candidate, after all, and hatchings had a life changing effect on the lives of every candidate. Now if only there was a dragon clutch hardening on the Sands! His obliviousness was erased as he caught sight of Mutasim's smile. The look in his eyes was warning enough, but with the addition of what he said Ferneth realized he had indeed said something wrong.
He sighed tiredly. What a troublesome guy to be around! He didn't feel like alienating Mutasim again, but he had as much right to be there as anyone else. Ferneth didn't reply to his mentor or bother to look at him, even when Jabari made a small noise of curiosity. He wondered how Meira dealt with Muta. He was probably different in her presence though. Well, looks like there would be little to no conversation now. Of course, Mutasim had one last thing to say. This time ferny glanced at him and was a little surprised at the new atmosphere.
The candidate was obviously trying to get rid of him, whether that meant scaring him off or physically getting him to leave he didn't know for sure. He let is glance slide off Mutasim dismissively and back to the river. A simple reply came, the voice dead of emotion. "Probably." Ferneth proceeded then to completely ignore Mutasim. He didn't do it out of arrogance or anything similar to that. He simply couldn't be bothered to either leave or try to repair things. He was also too stubborn to be the first to leave. This abrupt end to conversation was reason why he would later tell Meira that he and Mutasim weren't friends, but neither were they enemies.

This was...beyond strange. Not once since he'd come to Selenitas had Mutasim been incapable of getting someone to step off if he really wanted them to. He found himself staring at Ferneth searchingly, a truly forbidding scowl transfiguring his face. He knew he should have just continued to keep the other candidate at arm's length. Maybe it was about time to reestablish his name on the list of 'people to avoid' by dicing up the first few people who dared to so much as look at him wrong. It had worked well enough where he came from. Reputation was everything, and clearly it left much to be desired at the moment.
Despite the general forbidding neutrality of Mutasim's expression, Jabari didn't display an ounce of actual hostility. In fact, the brown (who was, yes, a pretty decent indicator of the candidate's moods) fluttered upwards, coming to land on Ferneth with another questioning chirp. He wrapped his tail loosely around the candidate's neck and leaned over to peer directly into the boy's eyes, cocking his head to one side in open curiosity. Mutasim rolled his eyes. Great.
With a small huff, he very noisily gathered the remaining blades, slamming them into their sheathes with a certain finality. It was more than clear that the candidate was pissed. He hated the fact that Ferneth had more or less called his bluff, and was even angrier that he really couldn't justify (or perhaps bring himself to) make his displeasure clear in a more satisfying manner. Mutasim may have wanted to see Ferneth retreat - no matter how much spilled blood it involved - in fear. But, in the end, he was no longer the creature who wouldn't have hesitated in the past. Muta would be the first to say that it wasn't so much a personality shift as the determination to prove to himself that he wasn't a pyschotic killer, however. The memories still haunted him.
"Come, Jabari," the candidate grated out, sliding from the rock with the daggers wrapped loosely in their cloth. He cast one scathing glance back at Ferneth and hobbled off into the barracks, silently cursing the other candidate's name all the while. One look at the stairs caused him to vocalize the steady string of profanity. He hated stairs after this half-crippled game. Absolutely hated them.
