Rofi took her hand reluctantly, and planted himself firmly on the dragon's back, just as his father had taught him. As Onyth took off in a wild twist, there was a rush of air and adreniline. He hadn't flown in years, but it all came back to him. For a moment, everything melted away. Elysia and A'emi ceased to exist, along with his bonds to and from each and every person in the Weyr. For a second, it was just him, Onyth, and the clear blue sky.
Elysia startled him, commenting on the fact that he didn't fall off. "Oh, I've flown before," he said somewhat blankly. A long, long time ago, he thought to himself. "There's the--" he was cut off mid-sentence by a rush of air as Onyth plummetted towards the water. He let out a shriek of suprise and excitement before hitting the water.
He drifted underwater, letting himself tumble for a while, until the shockwaves from the landing had ceased. He emerged breathlessly with a huge grin. Elysia asked if he was all right. To happy to remember that he didn't like her, he nodded eagerly. "That was so fun!"
He started swimming to shore. "Better take off my--" Before he could say shoes, he froze. He frantically paddled to shore. Now that he had reached shore, he was too anxious to see the damage, so he slowly tugged off his boots and peeled off his wet boots. Finally, he dared a look at his sketchbook. "No..."
It was completely waterlogged. Like a sponge, the thick paper had absorbed water, becoming wrinkled and yellow. Almost unwillingly, he lifted the cover, staring in horror. It was a sketch he remembered doing of a large blue dragon the day they said he would be a candidate. Now, the greys all ran together, and the outline was barely visible and blurred.
He flipped through the pages, but not one sketch had been spared. Pictures of every living thing in the Weyr were gone. He closed his eyes. At least this was not his first sketchbook--he knew better than to bring it with him, as it had pictures of his parents in it.
"Damn," he said, tossing the book aside. His face was immoble for once, frozen on a glum expression. He tried to shake it from his mind. What's done is done. You can't mourn the past. What a familiar phrase, good for coping with everything from disappointment to death. He smiled, somewhat insincerely. From the distance, A'emi yelled, asking about the water, unaware of Rofi's unhappiness.
"Yes, very."

As Onyth reached the shore she lowered her head and shook her entire body from nose to tail tip much like a canine. She gave a croon and looked back at hers who was practically glaring daggers from her place on the dark dragon’s back. First a soaking and now a not to comfortable shake. “Onyth you can be such a brat.” She said with a bit of dramatic flare before unsnapping the soaked straps to dismount. In response Onyth gave a rumble and waited until hers removed the straps before bounding off to roll in the sand. Much better.
Elysia groaned. She was so soaked. Oh the greenrider had planned on swimming anyway but not for a little but after they had gotten to the beach. Now she was soaked form head to toe. Wringing out her hair she plucked at her wet tank top with a distasteful look on her face. Eww. Modesty had never been a strong point for her and so she wasted no time in removing the soaked top. Wearing just a breastband and her shorts now, she flung her hair back to finally answer A’emi. “The water is nice. Cool. Much cooler than the air. You should try it.” Giving a smile she turned to regard the candidate. The look on his face gave her pause. Whatever was wrong? He had looked so ecstatic before. Curiously the benden rider stepped closer as he pulled something out and began leafing through it rapidly. Uh oh.
Rofinel looked so upset that it actually caused Elysia to furrow her brow slightly. “I’m sorry. Did she ruin something? I assure you it wasn’t intentional if she did.” The conversation stopped Onyth from her rolling and she righted herself to give a questioning croon. The greenrider had just gotten to the candidate’s side when he flung the book aside. Oh well no fixing it now.
Elysia was resigned to ignore it when a shadow crossed her path and she looked up to see her green walking towards them. Bowing her head, Onyth eyed the waterlogged paper curiously and then turned whirling eyes on the candidate. Reaching forward she nosed him in the back, her eyes whirling in apologetic colors. She then spoke right to the boy. I am sorry little one. I did not mean to ruin your book. Her words where soft and it was obvious from the tone that she meant what she had said.
Elysia snorted then and strode over to he dragon to caress her eye ridge. No need to be upset darling. He was the one who wanted a ride. You are not at fault. To Rofinel she said simply. “Onyth doesn’t normally speak to others. She must really feel the need to apologize.” Indeed she must have for usually apologies where passed through her. That was rather interesting.

…something was wrong.
A’emi was far too accomplished an actor to not know it when he saw it in other people, and the greenrider deflated slightly on the beach. His arms remained up for a moment before he let them flop down at his sides; a frown passed across his face, curious more than sympathetic. Sure, maybe it was startling, but surely nothing was wrong? Unless Onyth was more stupid than he’d given her credit for being, since killing and/or severely injuring a Candidate wouldn’t go over well with the Weyrleadership, he was pretty sure, and it’d be pretty hard to blame it on him regardless of what they said. Hunh.
And then a flash of off-white. The first thought that flashed through A’emi’s mind was – cloth? But no; he corrected him a minute later, remembering, paper. The sketchbook he’d teased was ‘illegal’. Ouch. No wonder the kid was upset, even if just a little. The drawings were good, after all. Not what A’emi deemed ‘art’, but each to his own. As everyone congregated on the shore, A’emi blinked, and then started over to join them, slipping around Onyth to settle next to Rofi – although he was relatively careful not to actually touch the kid.
That would be bad. That would get him wet. (Speaking of wet…Elysia, mm; she looked much better without the shirt on and…okay. He was going to stop right about there for now.) A’emi leaned forward slightly so he could flash the kid a faint smile before he said, softly, “Hey, you should’ve kept that. I mean, I don’t expect it’s in great condition but…for the memories. First time Onyth decided to dive headlong into the ocean with you aboard, y’know?”
Maybe being serious, solemn, would have been the better approach, but A’emi couldn’t do solemn, not for long, and anyway, solemnity never cheered him up. He kind of wanted to touch the kid – his shoulder, or his hair, just as a sympathetic gesture, but…still, no. Getting wet was just not worth it. At least not until he’d taken off his shirt. His pants would have to stay on, more was the pity, for the kid’s sake, but…A’emi refused to ruin his shirt in the ocean. Vain? A little, but he really didn’t have many (he wasn’t exactly packed for a vacation when he and Kyrahth had been…detained) and he’d rather keep the few he did have.
“Someday when you’re famous, it’ll be worth millions.”

Rofi shook his head at Elysia. “Oh, no it’s not her fault. She didn’t know.” Onyth walked up to them and nudged Rofi’s back with her nose. She apologized. “Oh, it’s okay, Onyth. You really didn’t know, and I didn’t think.” He always got a flash of happiness when a dragon decided to speak to him, and it was only made stronger when Elysia said that Onyth rarely spoke to others. “I’m honored, Onyth, and really, it’s all right. It’s just disappointment, and knowing me I’ll be over it in a few days.
It was a bit more than disappointment, as it was the loss of his hard work, but it was already starting to heal as happiness about Onyth took over. Rofi was never very upset for more than a few minutes, as his mind had cheerful antibodies to attack almost every pain within him. “I’m just glad I left my more important one in my room today.”
Rofi appreciated A’emi trying to cheer him up, and tried to join him in joking it away. “Oh, I don’t think I could forget it. That ride was definitely worth the cost.” At A’emi’s second comment, Rofi shook his head. “I’m never going to be famous. That would require changing my practice from a carefree hobby to a slow and painful process to produce something with much less sentimental value.” Besides, if someone liked his art enough to want it, he would probably just give it to them out of appreciation.
Rofi smiled. He tried to push it away completely with some simple pleasure. “Well, there’s no point in just standing around. Let’s go!” With that, he bounded into the water. His run began to slow as he got deeper, until it was almost a completely ridiculous speed. He stopped when the water touched his shoulders. It was rather deep, considering he was so tall for thirteen. He began treading water under his feet, his head bobbing up even higher. For someone who seemed so awkward and clumsy on land (especially when in a rush), he was incredibly graceful in the water.
