Yosk risked a quick glance over her shoulder at the sound of Swisk’s displeasure. Surely she couldn’t be losing a chaser this soon! She’d never get another one if Swisk vanished on her! Maybe she was moving too fast for them all to keep up? No. Dmisk’s batting at her tail changed Yosk’s mind on that point. The green put on a little more speed, flicked her tail enticingly at Dmisk as she did so, and settled for offering Swisk and the other whers she couldn’t see another of her inviting howls. They should stay, they really should. Oh please stay…
Pidesk was rather impressive, Yosk’s evaluation had a slightly guilty tinge to it even now, or at least the glimpses she could catch of him as she cornered were. Nyssk she still wasn’t entirely certain about, though he had managed to imitate her quite well, and the striped wildling was loud but certainly enthusiastic.
Yosk bounded joyously out of the trees and across a small clearing, shining a ghostly silver shade in the shafts of moonlight that bathed the place. The green quickly became fascinated with the pools of silver light, so pretty, so very pretty indeed. Yosk dashed from one pool of light to the next, drawing a strange new pattern across the open space before the tree shadows closed over her again. What now, what now? Needed to keep them interested she did, needed to challenge them.
She wanted to see them, the green decided and leapt over a low shrub, wriggled under a low hanging branch and began to stalk, still moving fast though not at her top speed, moving as silently as she could manage around her chasers. Maybe she could fool them all!
Yoalla listened for a few long moments as the people around her stirred then her eyes snapped open to glare at Swithin and Nysania, with her gaze settling on the female wherhandler, partially because she made the last sound and partially because Yosk was nervous of the woman’s counterpart. A soft cautionary rumble rose from Yoalla’s throat, chase, don’t fight, and don’t upset her Yosk. Even partially merged with her green’s personality Yoalla was protective, maybe too protective, of Yosk.
Piden caught her attention next, he’d moved while she wasn’t looking and Yoalla graced the redhead with a bright smile. What a wonderful idea! It would be far nicer to lounge on the ground than stand about. The greenhandler moved into a space of her own and sank to the ground, plucking long stemmed flowers from Yosk’s nest and tossing them at the three bluehandlers. Come down here, join her.

Leaving? Of course not! Swisk would not give up so easily, even if he was finding himself quite winded and his muscles were burning beneath his hide. No no, Yosk was too beautiful to give up on so soon! Though now at the back of the group it seemed a futile effort for the older blue he wouldn't give that prat Nyssk the pleasure of knowing he'd made him step out.
Pidesk was a real wher, if ever there was one. Such a gentleman. Though really Swisk didn't need the help - thank you though. He could do it on his own, really why was everyone so concerned about his ability to participate?
He caught up enough where he could see the tail ends of those who were slightly closer to Yosk - though he couldn't see the green himself. Pity, he found it easier to run when she was within his sights. He let out a loud howl of his own so she knew he was still there vying to win the beauty that was her.
Swithin's eyes flicked to Piden as he moved to lay down. Then to Yoalla when she seemed to be accepting his offer, though she didn't go to him directly. Leaning against a tree he let himself slide down the trunk until he was sitting. Yes he wanted to be closer to Yos- Yoalla. But he wouldn't crowd her, that wasn't his style at all.
In the clearing Swisk watched as Yosk jumped in and out of the pools of light - oh how she shined under the light! He crooned out loudly to her, to let her know just how beautiful she was. Then she disappeared. Where had she gone? Swisk halted in the middle of the field to catch his breath. The blue looked closer to death than he ever had before with the way his skeletal form shook from his labored breathing. He was stubborn though, and he could do this!

Nyssk finally settled into an easy stride. Close enough to keep Yosk in sight, yet far enough back to be ready to react no matter what she pulled. He had extremely impressive stamina for a blue and so wasn’t worried about growing tired before the green did. The female’s inviting howl was answered in kind. Nyssk tossing back his head briefly to sing reassurances back to her. Oh he was most certainly staying. Who wouldn’t stay for a chance at a beauty such as her? Bounding through the forest the purple hued male sped up briefly as they broke out into a moonlit clearing.
Yosk’s playful antics were taken in with an appreciative rumble as she blazed a glowing path through the silvery pools of light and then disappeared. Nyssk gave a bark and slammed on the brakes, talons digging into the grass as he stopped and spun around. Mantling his wings and striking a pose in the moonlight he searched for the older green. Clever girl. Where had she gone? Nostrils flared to take in her scent, eyes searching for her telltale heat signature. Ah trying to get around them was she? Without a sound the young blue slipped back into the forest to try and get ahead of Yosk and cut her off. Clever and beautiful. He brushed against her mind. She deserved only the best didn’t she see?
Nysania actually gave Yoalla an apologetic look after the glare a soft reassuring noise leaving her throat. Had he upset the pretty green? Nyssk only wanted to make sure that she had the best chasers. That one shouldn’t count. But it wasn’t worth upsetting the pretty Yosk. Instead the woman moved to pick up the tossed flower and then moved towards Piden and Yoalla settling down beside the other handlers. Would rather not be near the bronze but Nysania/Nyssk would ignore that fact for Yoalla/Yosk.
~~~
The tiger striped wildling maneuvered through the jungle paths with relative ease, relying more on scent and heat signature then actual sight to track the beautiful Yosk. Her call was answered in kind, the brown’s feral sounding howl echoing through the night in the wake of hers. Oh he was going nowhere. In fact he would follow her wherever she wished quite happily. Twisting around a tree the wildling broke out into the moonlight with the others but he did not slow nor stop as some of them did. Instead he tossed his head back and cavorted through the moonlight in a rare show of playful spirits, bounding though the moonlight pools and circling the other males briefly, before setting himself to tracking the beautiful Yosk again.
Her scent was still strong and although it would be easy for him to track Yosk down if he so chose the wildling decided to let the green play her game as she wished. Instead he quietly brushed her mind with a soft invitation and continued to dance amongst the moonlit pools in the clearing. Yosk should come out and show them all how to really dance. He was sure she could put them all to shame. Shifting to turn in her direction the wild brown waited to see what the green would do. At least if Yosk chose to run off again he would be facing the right direction to pursue.
It was a sudden change. One moment Dmisk was right on Yosk's tail, then he faded back and vanished into the surrounding foliage, going on a path divergent from the rest. That Nyssk had listened at all the older male attributed to raging hormones more than anything else. Hormones that didn't effect the cold creature as much as it did the others. In truth, the wher was cold by choice more than by nature, and willing to let some of that slide for his clutchsisters (and only his clutchsisters). That didn't mean he was keeping a volatile youngling at his back. He hadn't taken the territory around Selenitas for himself and the Sentinel by being stupid.
Thus the wher took to the game of blindspots and staying downwind. Ghosting through the heaviest of the foliage with hardly a sound. He appeared briefly near Swisk and Pidesk. That way, the male directed Swisk, who seemed to be flagging a little. Understandably. It was merely a mental nudge toward the valley. As soon as Dmisk appeared, he vanished again, slinking about with one real goal in mind. Yosk would not hold it against him. In fact, he knew his sister; Nyssk bothered her, though she would never turn down a chaser.
Still keeping to deep cover, it took little time to uncover the pup stalking his clutchsister instead of playing by the game she'd laid out. Tiger of course knew what was what and Swisk and Pidesk Dmisk had faith in. Silent and without warning the blue leapt Nyssk with a flare of wings, back claws slashing at the hatchling's back. Shallow slashes washing the night with the scent of ichor, even if it was little more than trickles. Just in time for Yosk to slip by. There would be no surprising his clutchsister with that scent on Nyssk.
Dmisk landed neatly and pivoted to disappear back into the trees at the young blue's tail, in the same direction Yosk had gone. Instead of pursuing her, however, he stepped out into the clearing with a flick of tail, mantling wings as he did so and circling so as to keep an eye on the youngling. Too bad it was Eikask's. The blue had a low tolerance for creatures who didn't know their place, and it would be far more convenient to just...be rid of him.
For his part, he did not join her. The harper didn't mind the idea, mind you, but it was a position of weakness easily exploited and Dmisk's role was shifting, anyway; Yoalla might blame him for not playing obedient wher-consumed handler, but she blamed him for most things anyway. The man faded back to a tree not far from Swithin's and simply leaned against it, watching Yoalla with an occasional glance at the other wherhandlers.
It was a sad thing for Yosk to realise as she stalked through the undergrowth (a fairly futile effort to hide from other whers in the night) but the green was coming to the end of her endurance, as carefully as she placed each foot the touch of paw to ground still made itself felt all the way to her back and she was having trouble keeping her breathing quiet enough to ‘hide’ from her chasers adequately. Well if Yosk was going to have to choose (she didn’t really like choosing, it always meant upsetting someone) then she was going to do it the right way.
The green’s hindquarters tensed under her, ready to send Yosk springing back out into that moonlit clearing she’d just left, when a new scent caught her nostrils; ichor, sharp and fresh on the air, not the old dried stuff on the tiger striped brown’s claws. She had a good notion who’d marked whom, the underlying scent was Nyssk’s, and Yosk couldn’t say she was too sorry, which would logically mean Dmisk had marked the younger blue. Obviously Nyssk wasn’t a good choice, although he had been beautiful in the moonlight.
Taking the leap she was prepared for Yosk bounded through the undergrowth joyously, bursting out into the same clearing she’d just left, and took wing above the trailing whers, circling the clearing while she considered them. Pidesk apparently had lost her, he was strong, but not fast, and besides as a bronze he was Eikask’s. Dmisk, though one of her favourite brothers, also belonged to her more beautiful sisters. Those two were brushed with Yosk’s appreciation for their attendance, and her apologies for not being able to choose them. Nyssk was dismissed sternly, with only a tinge of guilt.
That left two for consideration when Yosk landed with a flare of wings on the grass. Both unclaimed but she had to choose only one. The green’s gaze flashed from side to side, weighing two very different whers against each other. In the end one won out, he was sweet, hadn’t been late, and had brought her wonderful sweet smelling flowers, even though she was only plain and pale Yosk. With a brief apology to the wildling brown Yosk approached Swisk and lowered her head to butt against the wraithlike blue’s shoulder again diffidently yet somehow demanding at the same time.
Back in the original moonwashed clearing Yoalla turned dark eyes on handler after handler as Yosk weighed their whers. Though she’d been apologetic and moderately obedient Nysania still got a slight frown from Yoalla. Marked by Dmisk, not good at all. Turning her head she found Dmitri still stood and gave him a wry smile. Time to choose then. Yoalla’s expression turned somewhat fey as she rose to her feet and ruffled Piden’s hair, sorry Pidesk. Moving over to Dmitri Yoalla laid a hand flat on the harper’s chest in another gesture of regret. Nysania was ignored but for a brief glance, then Yoalla stopped and turned her gaze around the clearing, well that left only one choice of course. Approaching Swithin Yoalla sank down beside him and dropped her head against the bluehandler’s shoulder in a mirror of Yosk’s gesture to Swisk.
Ichor.
The older blue recognized that smell well, even if his senses weren't as keen as they once were. Glancing around the clearing he was trying to figure out which one has been attacked - he wasn't as familiar with the others' scents as he should have been. Hopefully it was that little purple-blue, Nyssk. He deserved to be put in his place by someone. Even if that someone wasn't Swisk.
While he still worked to catch his breath, and to try and catch a look at whatever had been done to Nyssk, Yosk suddenly re-appeared in the clearing. Shining in all her beauty. He crooned to her as she made her pass by the males, seeming to size them up.
She was so beautiful, even if he didn't pick him he was honored to be considered. He hoped the lovely young green knew that. Another croon as he watched her pass by...
But then there she was. Nudging his shoulder. With a happy croon he nudged her back and rubbed his head over hers. His other half was perhaps even more surprised by the green's choice than Swisk himself was as he sat there. Eyes darted to Yoalla-Yosk as she walked around dismissing male after male. Then she was upon him. Next to him, her head on his shoulder. A deep breath pulled in her scent - it'd been a long time since he'd been this close to a female. Arms quickly wrapped around her shoulders and pulled her closer to him, before she changed her mind. Lips pressed to her forehead then moved down to her cheek before finding hers. The kiss was hot. Hard. Needy.
