It was a well known fact that Ghost was not an attention seeker, in fact she was very much like the TurnOver ghosts that her bonded had named her for, rarely seen and never caught. But just recently Mo’rya would have to admit that the gold seemed to have undergone a complete change of personality, becoming possessive of his presence, almost clingy, and, well… showing off. At first Mo’rya had blamed to odd behaviour on the presence of the baby salamandyr he’d Impressed but this morning the truth had been to obvious to ignore. There was no doubt that Ghost was brighter than normal her liquid gold shade glowing softly and her more orange speckles blazing like little suns. Needless to say Mo’rya was so excided by this development that he was practically ready to burst. Glowing meant a Flight, which in turn meant eggs and hatchings, and adorable little baby firelizards.
Now Ghost dozed a shaft of midmorning sun before the open window, lovingly oiled to bring out her shine even further, wings and tail occasionally twitching in response to some dream or another. Twitching even more than the gold was her bonded. Mo’rya had attempted to work on making his riding straps for a while, then tried to work off his energy by clearing the furniture to one for some weapons drill, but he couldn’t concentrate on that either, so he’d moved everything back and now just sat gazing at the golden form on his windowsill almost jumping up every time Ghost twitched.
Epifayrmuth regarded his bonded with tolerant amusement, he couldn’t see what was so exciting himself; queens flew, it was in their nature. The dwarfed bronze scratched at an itchy spot on his neck with a hind claw than looked around at Mo’rya’s other pets, he found the complacency of the two blues much easier to deal with. Evil hung down from the bedpost by his amazingly thick tail, obviously sleeping, and Wit just lounged on the desk watching everything silently for the moment. Mo’rya, have you ever heard the saying ‘a watched pot never boils’? the dragon inquired, although since he had lifted the phrase from his rider’s mind he knew full well Mo’rya had. You know Ghost doesn’t like too much attention, maybe she’s waiting for you not to be watching her. In fact Epifayrmuth was sure Ghost would wake when she was ready no matter who looked at her but he was tired of Mo’rya’s gazing and twitching now, anyone would think he was a bronze firelizard not a young human male.
‘You really think so?’ Mo’rya asked, turning his head to look at his dragon. When she flies, she Flies. Our Ghostling, Ghost-thing. Journeys end in lover’s meetings. Epifayrmuth might not be certain of what he said but Wit certainly was (even if it was nonsenses, the plump little beast looked around at his four slaves triumphantly. He was pleased, more slaves soon, oh clever, clever Wit, how wise he was to choose the one with the golden firelizard!
Oblivious to those talking about her Ghost stirred, her eyelids sliding aside to reveal royal purple and bright violet patterns in the facets of her eyes. She stood and flared her wings a few times, preparing for the Flight ahead. Standing proud in the open window the large gold lifted her head and her voice in an inviting song. Who was ready to pursue her? Which males would contest for hand?

Wild firelizards weren't much tolerated around Selenitas these days, but the wild Bronze couldn't stay away. There were few Golds in these jungles; most of the flights were for Greens, and the Bronze hardly ever caught. He was not built for flitting and flirting, but for fighting the silver that burned it's way out of the sky. When there was a Gold for the catching, it was worth a trip into fairly dangerous territory. He'd done his best to skulk out of sight, hiding in cracks and staying away from all the humans, but now he couldn't stay hidden. He could hear her, and she was calling. It was time to risk the arrows.
It was easy enough for the wild Bronze to find a perch in sight of Ghost - and for now, it was even out of sight of anyone but the gold's owner. The Bronze offered what passed as a form of prayer to the blue vault above: please let him come through this safe, to chase another day. There was a fair of greens and blues and browns who would miss him, although they were strong and smart, and would survive without him. Well, they were not his concern now; the delicately, somehow beautifully emaciated Ghost was. Or maybe that was the flight talking - his eyes already whirled purple as he trumpeted a (much rougher) response to her call.
Stretching his reddish-bronze wings (on the small side, really, for a Bronze), the Wildling filled his barrel chest with air, adding a raucous challenge to his call. That was for the other males, not for Ghost - they had to know who was dominant, here, even if it was not his territory. For the Wildling was old, and while he never could remember much, the scars on his hide and the muscular pudge that filled in the place where a slim waist would be on a younger beast marked his age better than anything. A truncated tail, half the length he was born with, further marked him as a noble, experienced beast. That he'd lost to a hunting Feline, and you could still spot teethmarks in the healed flesh if you looked hard enough. Could these young, soft creatures hope to compete with the proven power and dignity of age?
He hoped not.

Heir had been aware, vaguely, of a queen rising in the weyr and had slowly begun to change his sleeping patterns. Having long since adapted to the night to be with His and Cerysk, it was not so easy a task. The bronze decided it was worth it when he winged his way close to Ghost. He was just this side of polite, distance-wise, from the queen when he landed. He chirped a rough greeting to the young gold and settled in to wait for the rest of the competition. Surely there'd be more than himself and the wildling.
Speaking of which, he eyed the other bronze already present. Hmm. The other male seemed older than himself, though Heir was not so young either. He had a good six turns under his wings and had seen much of the world while travelling with His. He had seen places firelizards seldom did. He considered himself the better mate than some wild thing would be, capable of sticking around permanently and helping look after the young - but then again he was a fairly arrogant male.
((Apologies for the short post. >.<))

Quiet and subtle as she was, Ghost had still caught the attention of one, very special, 'bronze'. Haru leaned out on her rock perch, silently waiting for the queen to arrive. She'd been shining all week, so surly she must rise soon. Haru had trouble showing 'his' affections when his human slave hardly visited the Weyrlings. But it was the Flight that really matter and Haru knew 'he' was the best 'bronze' in the Weyr and beyond. Ah, Ghost had appeared at last! Haru dove from 'his' perched and winged over the gold's head, letting a few daisies drop to her ledge. Did she like flowers? No one else had brought her such a thoughtful gift, had they.
Haru's excited, and high pitched, trill changed to a low growl when 'he' spotted the other males. Hmph! Look at them! How old, ugly and dull they were! Haru landed on a nearby ledge and puffed up 'his' chest proudly. 'He' was a far better, handsomer, and stronger 'bronze' then those worthless creatures. The fact that 'he' was smaller and oddly, green, were facts to which Haru was sadly obvious. 'He' strutted before the others, proudly declaring how 'he' was clearly the only 'bronze' worthy of Ghost's attention. They would all be better off if they just went home now.
Garaeth, T'ke was lying on his belly and peeking over the edge of the ledge. Below and some distance away, he could just make out the flashes of gold, bronze and single, tiny speck of green that were the fire lizard. What is she doing? A blue, dragon head leaned out to join his rider and eyed the spectacle. I believe she is Chasing, T'ke-love, Garaeth's eyes whirled with amusement. T'ke gave a long, exasperated sigh. She does realize she's a green, right? Garaeth chuckled. I do not believe she does. T'ke covered his face with a hand. Can we send her back? I think she's broken. Silly, T'ke-love. At least she is happy! Good for her. If only we could all be so lucky.

A flash of copper color announced his arrival. The wild bronze was quite young compared to the grizzled wildling that was encroaching on his territory. Neither the subtle shift in attitude from the humans in the weyr, nor the golden mandyr that had attempted to kill him in his previous gold chase, had kept him down for too long. Torn wing sail had healed quite well in fact. No doubt a product of his wild nature.
Originally the copper colored bronze had been planning on just chasing away this sudden intruder to his domain. But once he saw and heard the reason for the intrusion his thoughts shifting into more important areas. Mating. Passing on his genes. With a rather loud bugling call for his size the metallic bronze did a loop and approached the window. The other flits were mostly ignored as he landed, claws gripping the wall to the outside of the window.
Flaring his scarred wings for balance the copper wilding trilled appreciatively at the almost skeletal looking gold. Despite her rather odd appearance he was ready and willing to put everything he had into chasing her. Only once his greeting was complete did the male eye his completion. The grizzled and older flit, some bronze he couldn’t remember seeing before, and a green?. A chirp of confusion was offered to Haru. What was she doing?

The warm months had come, which brought the longer days and longer hours of sun light with them. Azaran stretched as he yawned, shifting his wings to better catch those said rays and bathe in them. He'd been outside for a while now not caring one way or another if his Human was moving about the Weyr without him. It was Dash's turn to stay with their Human, the Brown Mandyr would contact him if he was needed. The Bronze was drunk with the sun and he believed his laziness was deserved. He was the King of the Selenitas Firelizards after all, that alone should entitle him to a break every now and again. Flying around the Weyr everyday to make sure everyone (and by everyone he meant Firelizards) was in line was a tough job. Not that all of the flitters accepted his self acclaimed title, but he didn't mind. As long as they had the right mind to listen to him when it came down to it, he left contact with those flitters down to a happy check in.
The Bronze peeled back an eye as something touched the edge of his consciousness. It was a familiar feeling, one that even in his stupor he could recognize. Azaran had responded to many of these calls in his lifetime. It was his duty after all to show his support and fidelity to the Queens of Selenitas Weyr. No matter what he did, they always would have more power and most of the time, more respect than he could ever hope to have. Fluttering his wings as he rose to his feet, the Bronze itched the scarred skin on his hindquarters before stretching his limbs. It was a matter of moments before he was in the air and climbing the drafts, searching for the source of the mental tugging. Ghost had to be Rising, for no Wilding Queen would come close to Selenitas now that the humans hunted unmarked Firelizards.
Spiraling downward, Azaran landed in the scrub brush above Ghost's window, clinging to the plant fibers that would support his weight. Trilling happily at the skinny Queenling, he ruffled his wings in greeting. Hello Golden prettyone, he was here. Snaking his around so that he could look at his competition the Bronze inspected them closely. What a group. The Green who hung around was ignored, mainly because he couldn't believe that the female sought to chase. The idea was so preposterous that it didn't even cross his mind. There was one competitor in particular that drew his attention. The Copper Bronze. His arch-nemesis. He puffed up, not only at the Copper Bronze but at the other Wilding Bronze. The scarred male certainly was not the most dominant among them. Shooting a glare at the Copper male before turning his attention back onto Ghost. He offered her a chirp as he waited with patience for her to take flight.

Ghost fell silent, letting the invitation hang in the air for a few moments as she waited for her admirers to arrive, and arrive they did. The first she didn’t know at all, a red bronze, smallish, handsome in his way, yet scarred. Somewhat loud as well, Ghost noted with a little flick of her wings. A second bronze arrived more quietly, Heir, whom she knew in passing. A shower of daisies interrupted the gold’s musing for long enough to bring her attention to a very strange sight indeed. A green was courting her? Ghost brushed the green’s mind with a curious touch, and thanks for the flowers. Before Haru had a chance to answer however Ghost was distracted by a bugling sound and snaked her head around to observe the second wildling to come and pay court to her. Were all the wild firelizards so loud? The copper bronze landing on the wall beside her window caused Ghost to flare her wings and skitter sideways, and the final arrival of Azaran above her left the large gold feeling just too crowded.
In the midst of the trilled compliments of the last two bronzes to arrive Ghost kicked away from her perch at last, swooping low over the ground and winding her own trilling song around theirs. Come then males (and strange little green)! Capture a Ghost if you can!
Something about having the two wildlings present prompted Ghost to take her Flight towards the jungles that surrounded Selenitas, and very soon the large gold was out of sight of anyone but a random hunter and even then as a gold blur with several other blurs zipping after it. Ghost dodged amongst the tree trunks, and worked her way up into the lowest branches not slowing for a second; she was confident in her abilities but not in those of her chasers. This should challenge them a little, weed out anyone who couldn’t fly with speed and precision.
Back in the weyrling barracks Mo’rya waved madly to Ghost until she was out of sight. Then he carefully gathered up the daisies and put them in a glass of water because Ghost had seemed to like them, despite the unlikely source of the gift. Now what? Well he did still have those straps to make…

There was...a green. That was most intriguing. The bronze might even have gone for her had she been rising and he didn't chase greens often. As it was, if anyone else chose to rose at the same time as young Ghost he wouldn't even pay them half a mind. Heir watched the gold skitter away from the second wild male and a little bit closer to him. He chittered partially in amusement, partially comfortingly. Couldn't have a startled gold now could they?
The gold's challenge when she set things into motion had Heir excited. Catch a Ghost? A worthy feat for one such as himself. He was a fully dedicated to the chase now. He'd give his all and either impress or take the gold spirit for himself or fail. As she took them to the forest he trilled approval of her choice. It would make things challenging, just as he liked. Heir twisted in and amongst branches with precision. It wasn't particularly gracefully or awe-inspiring to see but it worked.
It also kept the queen in sight and that was what mattered the most to him. If he could see her then she could see him. It was his general rule in flights to keep within eyesight. How could he show off his worth otherwise? Heir zipped around a tree trunk and in between a pair of branches that looked much too close to allow him safe passage but he made it anyways. Should Ghost take a moment to see perhaps it would impress her.

The copper bronze narrowed his eyes at Azaran as the other bronze approached. Bonded rival. His nemesis if you would. A soft hiss left his throat as the bonded bronze puffed up, the copper bronze flaring his wings in a return attempt at posturing. Movement from Ghost however stole his attention from his rival and the other competitors. With a loud call the copper colored wildling flung himself from the wall wings snapping open as he dipped down after her trilling back a return song.
He was ever do grateful for the golden ones flight path. Yes. Away from the danger this place represented. And into the trees he had been born beneath. Powering after her with strong wing strokes the copper colored wilding began to dance her dance. He knew these trees. Knew them as well as the other wilding he was competing against. Knew them better than the golden ghost he was chasing. But as she wove and danced through trunks he gave a call of appreciation following the almost emaciated looking gold as she expertly wove through the lower branches.
He was impressed. Not many tame golds could boast a performance like this. With precision and grace he sought to weave through the lower branches after her, carving out his own path through the intertwining wood and vines.

Releasing the scrub as he pushed off the rock, Azaran snapped open his wings to catch the air as he descender. He flapped, gaining momentum and altitude as the Queen drew them away from her home and window. Veering away from the Wildings, he glided toward Heir keeping close to the other bonded flitter. Although that Bronze was a competitor, he was far better a flight companion than the others. Swinging his gaze toward the Green he chirped in confusion but decided not to pay much attention to the female. If she wished to indulge her illusions he would say nothing against it. This flight was about Ghost, for it was for her that they were here.
The jungle. After all the Turns of his life he was familiar with the jungle in the immediate area around Selenitas. Not, perhaps, as well as the Wildings but well enough. Swerving as they entered the treeline, he dipped under a tree bow and rolled to avoid the next tree trunk. Speeding up as the Queen picked up speed, Azaran spun upward into the lowest branches, dodging and weaving, all the while trying to keep tabs on everyone through the rushing foliage. Ghost was the hardest to follow, the shining Gold of her hide was the only thing that gave her away.
Trilling he called out to his Queen. Let all of them dance in the shifting light!

Well, that hadn't gone as smoothly as he liked. The wildling bronze hissed back at the other males, flaring his wings in challenge. Clearly they did not know of him and his prowess, but that didn't mean he should be dismissed simply because he was old and grey! The green, of course, must be confused or devoted to the Gold in some way, like a sister or a slave - she couldn't possibly mean to seriously chase - but the other Bronzes were another story. Luckily for them, though, Ghost chose that moment to take off, and he was distracted. He could deal with them later, once he caught the Gold.
Kicking off, he stretched his wings wide, following Ghost into the forest. His short tail restricted his agility somewhat, but it had been that way for years, and he'd learned to work around it. Instead of being thrown off by the trees, as he had just after he'd lost it, he twisted sideways, keeping his wings tucked in just far enough that the tips wouldn't clip trees. Little adjustments of his sails served to steer himself, rather than the whipping tails of the others. His turns weren't as tight, nor his flight as stable, but he managed, weaving through dappled light and shadows in pursuit.
He would have her in time, but he wasn't ready for his gambit yet. The rest could try their hands and tire themselves out first, and then the Wildling would make his move.

Haru drew 'himself' up even taller. 'He' was not at all bothered by the fact most of the other males weren't paying much attention to 'him'. They were probably all just nervous they had to compete with such a magnificent 'bronze' as 'himself'. Ghost had even liked 'his' present and none of them had thought to bring her flowers. Brushing off the odd looks as looks of dismay, Haru ignored the other challangers and Ghosts curious question. 'He' didn't need to be told how clear it was that 'he' was the best. The Flight would prove to them and the lovely Ghost who was.
No more time for preening, however, as Ghost had taken flight at last! Haru pushed away from 'his' ledge and spiraled after her. The jungle was not a place Haru visited often, but the choice of field didn't bother 'him'. With speed and agility so very unlike a 'bronze', Haru zipped through the trees in Ghost's wake. 'He' even took a little extra time to twirl around some of the branches, laughing at the others attempts to keep pace. Such slow, clunky beasts they were. Ghost would surly see how much better 'he' was.

For a while Ghost was content to weave her large yet lean body through the trickier parts of the intersecting branches, a feat that required quite some concentration from a firelizard as large as her, it was probably easier on her chasers than her in fact, but if they got lost here it would certainly show them up as an unworthy contender. However at present none of them seemed to be so inattentive as to crash or get stuck. Soon enough though she grew bored, it was clear she wasn’t going to weed anyone out this way so Ghost pulled up sharply into a near vertical ascent close to the trunk of some forest giant where there was a huge amount of space between the spreading branches.
Ascending to a level where twigs and foliage started to become a severe impediment to her progress the gold did something that was most likely completely unexpected to everyone and landed lightly on a branch, bounding along it until there was enough clear space around her to fly again. She had learned a trick or three, see? Thrusting herself into the air again, Ghost gave a mocking little trilling sound for anyone who’d lost her. She was pleased with what she’d learned but she would be pleased with any male who couldn’t find her again.
Among the upper branches Ghost skimmed over .the canopy at the fastest speed her oversized wings could carry her at, making a couple of swerves to avoid unusually high branches but mostly just striving for speed.

It was a good thing the Wildling Bronze had lived in the trees all his life - he had vague recollections of the days just after he'd lost his tail, and how hard it was to navigate in and around the branches of trees. With only half a rudder, steering had been difficult, near impossible until he re-learned how to balance, how to flick his stump around in such a way that he could guide himself accurately. Now, though, he had plenty of practice - had he been a Weyr flit, he likely would be lost, here, but the ability to navigate a jungle was tantamount to survival, for a wild creature.
And he had learned.
Of course, he couldn't follow Ghost as closely as some of the others, being rather broad of shoulder and barrel-chested to boot. She was large, yes, but slender and lean and above all young, without the experience of one his age, perhaps, but without the aching wing joints too. Still, he kept as tight to her tail as he could, staying a bit wide through the tight spaces and doing his best to follow her path. The Wildling had never been one to show off, so he focused on getting the job done, not adding any unnecessary flourishes.
When she turned vertical, through, the Wildling almost lost her. Correcting his angle so he could follow her into the canopy, he struggled through tight twigs and leaves, unable to see where she'd come through. Soon, he burst out into sunlight, hide marked with scrapes and scratches, but... where was Ghost? A quick, panicked circuit turned up nothing, until - there! How had he gotten ahead of her? The Wildling stopped worrying about it, flaring his wings as wide as he could to catch up. The how was not important, he figured, only the end.

The copper colored wildling was doing a decent enough job in keeping up the with the golden beauty that was shimmering in front of him. He was young enough to still be slightly reckless with the chances he took in pursuing her. His weaves and twists through the denser foliage grew more and more daring until the object of his affections pulled up to ascend along the trunk of a the massive tree. With a loud trumpet, as a verbal acceptance to her challenge, the young bronze set his wings to following her. Powering them and pushing himself as fast as he could in a desire to keep her in sight.
As the branches and vines grew more and more dense he pushed himself into following Ghost more closely pulling up almost just behind her tail. Only a flitter length away perhaps. Even so as the branches and greenery became more and more cluttered and dense, he was forced to pull back and give her space lest he crash himself. It was in this way that he suddenly lost her. With a trill of concern he fluttered in place for a few moments. As confused as some of the rest of them until she gave that mocking little trill. Ah above!
Shooting up out of the dense canopy he caught the flash of the golden Ghost ahead of him. Impressed with her cleverness he crooned and set his wings to powering after her as quickly as possible. He had to make up from some lost ground now after all. The other chasers were given the briefest of glances to see who had been lost before he strove for as much speed as possible. He had to catch up to her. Light glinted off copper colored hide as he pushed himself faster and faster, wings starting to give the first uncomfortable twinges of muscle ache. Still the wild bronze didn’t slow. He was completely unwilling to lose her this far into the chase.
