Piden leaned his head back against the wall and closed his eyes. He was cradling Red in one arm, the other hand holding down the lid of the box he'd made for Shells. The bronze had finally drifted off to sleep, shutting him up for a while, and Piden was determined to nap as long as he could. It was noon, the middle of the night for him, and he really hadn't gotten a lot of sleep since he brought Shells home. For the first time in days, there was silence in the Apartment - all of his creatures were asleep, Pidesk included. With a sigh, Piden drifted off, not caring that he was sitting upright. If it meant he got to sleep, he didn't care.
Two hours later, Piden was still asleep, now curled on his side with Red tucked into his chest. She's been looking much better, lately, practically shiny in a way her dull grey-green hide almost never was. But in his repositioning, Piden's hand had slipped off Shells' box, and now the Bronze was awake. stretching his over-long limbs, he pushed the top off the box, letting it clatter to the ground. Piden slept through it, and, with a sly chuckle, Shells poked his head out of the box, looking around for the other pet he was not allowed to see. Aha- there it was.
Shells was disappointing. Hissing slightly at Red, he ran over and prodded her, waking her from her sleep. As she blinked suspiciously violet eyes at him, Shells said, Wakey waky, ugliez greenie. Shells suspected lizard, maybe, but Denden claimed you Gold. Eyez no lie, you're just a fugly, useless Greenie. Shells, nice to meet you, following this pronouncement with a frill. He did not like useless greenies.
This was, however, not the right way to greet Red when she woke up. With a godawful screech, she lost her breakfast and startled backwards, waking Piden as she did. He was lost, terrified of something, but he didn't know what. He huddled into a corner, trying to figure it out, as Red frilled spastically, hissing and spitting at Shells. With her usual eloquence, the tiny Green spat,RED! ALL RED! RUN RUN RUN!! and bolted for the door. Shells followed with a delighted squeal of That's left, ugly greenie, RUN!
She did, flying up the spiraling pathway from the Apartments to the Drumheights. Pausing for a half-second on one of the tower tops, she let out a terrified call of RUN! RED RUN! REDRUM MUUUURDER!! If there were any males brave enough to respond to that call, they had better get here soon- not fully aware that she was, in fact, now running to mate, Red certainly wouldn't be waiting for them to catch up. Instead, she launched herself from the heights, gliding off into the forest, Shells scampering down the tower behind her. He would find her and make her sorry she was a Green.

Auran raised his head in alarm. Something was wrong. A green was calling for help! That it was a salamandyr didn't concern him, she needed a hero and Auran would come to her rescue! With a flap of sail like wings he was away. He rose into the sky, a colorful blend of blue color that whizzed past. He spotted Red as she sailed for the trees. With a low cry of determination, he followed in her wake. Never fear, he growled, Auran would defend her to the last! Now that he was closer the flight lust was starting to settle in. He was now more determined to defend Red. No male would have her, but him! Not while he had wings to fly and claws to slash. She would be his!
Merridan watched Auran go with a bemused look. He didn't usually chase salamandyrs, this could be interesting. Vikky cocked her head curiously, wondering where her playmate had gone. Was he playing without her. "Come on, Vikky," Mer picked her up and put her on her shoulder. "Let Auran have his fun. We'll get some tea." Tea! Yes! That was much better then Auran.

Away you! Awayawayaway! The Devil lifted her frill and hissed furiously at the approaching green firelizard. It was trying to eat her again! For a moment the salamandyr transferred her attention to Lao’s sleeping from. This was all his fault. Uglystupidgreenbronze! How dare he lay this thing in Dementia’s nest? And to let it bond to Devil’s slave? Unthinkable!
Denial glided slowly, stealthily, over the floor, carefully pausing to check the other occupants of the room were all asleep. This time she was going to get that tasty little snack that ran around so temptingly. Providing it didn’t wake everyone up with its noise! The firelizard hissed back, eyes flashing furiously. Silence food! Stay still and be eaten!
RUN! RED RUN! REDRUM MUUUURDER!! The pronoucment stopped both greens in their tracks, and before Denial could do more than register that her meal’s eyes had suddenly flashed purple, The Devil had run under the door and escaped. Well Denial wasn’t having any of that! She was going to eat that greentreat, and it sounded like there were more out there like it. Silently Denial slithered under the door, wriggled madly as it turned out her belly was slightly to distended for her to just fit, and finally escaped into the corridor. Now where was her snack?
Unaware that she was being followed The Devil raced along, tracking the dull green, yet somehow glowing, shape of Red as best she could. When the shape vanished into the Trees the salamandyr let out a frustrated hiss and bounded a few times, flapping her wings as if she expected to be able to burst into flight. However the best The Devil could manage was a controlled glide and it soon proved eaier for her to land and make her way along by running and climbing. The Devil away Red Rum. Murder away. The green called, trying to locate the lovely creature she’d seen.

It was a few hours past noon, and the sun was just right for sunning. Nikeath had insisted it was so; therefor it was. Tiramnet had scrubbed her down after their morning practice, and hooked a ride up to her weyr. Where, quite cheerfully, she had penned a note for Piden. He had been quite delightful company at the Hatching, and she had thought to invite him to dinner tomorrow -- a late breakfast for him, an early dinner for her. But with Nikeath sleeping, she had to hike her way down up the cliff before taking the river path up to the entrance for the wherhandler's apartments, note in hand.
Piden -- I would be delighted if you would meet me tomorrow evening, July 19, outside of the Dining Hall for a meal -- Tira
Short, simple, to the point. She ducked into the entrance and started walking down the hallway into the darkness. Piden hadn't been joking when he had described it as creepy. Her eyes adjusted slowly, until it became too dark to adjust. Tiramnet put one hand on the wall and stepped forward. Very last door, she muttered to herself, feeling along the curving path. Something small zipped past her, and Tira froze in place for a moment, the salamandyr's shriek ringing through her mind.
"Piden?" she called softly, forgetting for a moment in her startlement and fear of the unknown that he would be fast asleep at this hour. Tira cursed herself silently. Of course he wouldn't be awake. She edged forward and pulled a tiny fragment of glow fungus, thankful for the tiny scrap of light. Tira placed it between the folded note so the paper glowed but cast little light, and tucked it around the doorway, so that it would be noticeable but out of the way. She looked forward to dinner... lonely walks through creepy hallways with fleeing salamandyrs, not as much.

Dusk gave a loud shriek as he heard the salamandyr's call. Mika was his love, but she didn't seem very interested in him right now. The lust of the flight made him let her go. Nothing mattered but the pretty salamandyr who was running. Lazuli watched him in amusement as the he took off. Silly Dusk. It was an ugly salamandyr, not a pretty pretty fire lizard.
Mika looked at Dusk curiously. He took off into the air, his muscular wings beating frantically. His pinkish brown hide shined slightly with sweat as he noticed her. She was a pretty green salamandyr. And she would love him. Of this he was certain. Pretty green salamandyr and her wonderful mate brown Dusk. Good luck, Duskpinklittle! Upasanath called, letting out a loud roar of encouragement.
-----
Loli hissed in surprise as the two blue fire lizards beside her leapt into the air. Without a second thought to the green Loli or Eselda, the twins, pushed past each other, trying to reach her. They caught sight of her, along with two other fire lizards. Competition. Indo pushed past his brother. The green would be his, because he was superior to his brother in everyway.
Renn squeaked indignantly and sped up, until he was neck and neck with his brother. Indo was always trying to make him second best. Not today. He would beat his brother for the green. Flightlust took over and he pushed past his brother with determination. The green salamandyr would be his!

Shells was delighted. Not only was Red running away from him so nicely, other males had joined the chase! They all hated her just as much as he did. And he did hate her. He screeched wordlessly, urging them on. She lept from branch to branch; so did he. She took a tight turn around the base of a tree, reversing her direction- he made the same loop. He would have her soon. Red picked up her pace, tucking her wings in tight when she wasn't diving from branch to branch.
After less than a minute, Red burst out of the trees into a clearing with a flat rock in the middle. Claws screeching against stone, she swung around, frilling at Shells. Not. Want, she hissed, lines of red swirling with the purple. Shells stopped short, tail lashing, as he tried to figure out the best way to humiliate her. But where Red normally would have cringed and hid, today she stalked forward, frill fully extended. Her delicate frame looked in danger of blowing away in the slight breeze that had sprung up, but Red paid it no mind. With one more step forward, she hissed, Get him.
Shells cringed slightly, confused. The males were chasing Red, right? They hated her like he did! But... why did they look so threatening all of a sudden? As the Bronze shrunk a little, Red surveyed her protectors. Three blue flyers in varying shades, a pinky brown flyer, and a Green like her she thought she recognized. She knew Hers liked the Green's owner, at least a little. It didn't matter, though- which of her lovely males would chase off the intruder?
Shells didn't wait to find out. With an ill-mannered Dirty, darding shards uflies!! he turned and bolted. Red spat after him, her frilling now triumphant. Cooome, she cooed, then turned tail and dissapeared back into the woods, climbing the first tree she saw. She climbed all the way into the crown of the tree and launched herself into the air, even though she knew it wouldn't help her much. snapping her wings open to catch what breeze she could, she rode it sideways and down, banking into the next tree's top. The run was only just beginning.
Meanwhile, deep underground, Piden had huddled in with Pidesk, still confused and scared. There were sounds outside his door, tapping and scratching. Someone was out there, trying to get him. Trying to get in. He was dizzy and he felt sick, and it was coming under the door. Piden skittered backwards and Pidesk sat up, trying in vain to calm his Handler. The Bronze understood what was happening, even if Piden didn't. The Bronze urged his human to at least look at the letter, he was sure it wasn't a monster. On Pidesk's suggestion, Piden crept over, snatching it away from the door and glaring at it in the Glow's thin light. Most of it went over his head, except for one word- Tira. Yes, yes, Tiramnet, from the Hatching. She wasn't after him.
He swung the door open and darted out, ignoring the fact that he was only wearing his pale blue pj pants and nothing else. Years of living in mostly darkness had given him some great night vision, and he spotted Tiramnet immediately, although in the pitch blackness she was only a slightly denser spot of black. But it had to be her- somewhere he had protectors, and she was here, so it must be her. Even in his half-panicked state, he managed to purr, coming up behind her. "Tira? Are you here to... protect me? Come on, we've got to get inside. Something is after me... Shells, maybe. Not sure." He might sound completely nuts, but he had a fairly strong grip on Tira's upper arm, now, and was leading her back towards his apartment. Once they got inside, he'd lock the door, and then she'd protect him and they would be safe.
((If anyone isn't in yet, feel free to join late- I just want to get the run done before Eikask's, so it'll go fast!))

Tree trunks and branches rushed past as Auran charged into the forest. It wasn't easy avoiding them all, but he had a female to rescue. Nothing would slow him down. He came out into an open clearly and instantly saw the problem. So that red worm was attacking his precious salamandyr? That couldn't be allowed! Auran shrieked in fury as Red's cry went out. Yes, he would get him for her! He dove for Shells, claws ready to taste the offenders blood if he didn't move fast enough. Fear not, sweet Red! No worm would get her while he had a say in it.
The chase was on. Auran rose up out of the dive, his eyes rich purple. He sped after Red and Shells, but it wasn't the bronze he wanted. Wherever Red went, he would follow. He had to keep her safe from monsters like the red worm. No one would have her but him! He soared up over the tree and swooped in just behind Red as she glided to the next. He didn't bother with fancy tricks. Speed was what he needed to stay close to his green. So long as he was close, he was sure he could protect her.

Bare feet hit the ground behind her, and Tira froze again, cringing inwardly, certain that someone or something was about to run right into her. A hand grabbed her arm as someone started talking -- Piden. That was Piden's voice. He sounded as if he had completely lost his mind, talking in rushed tones about protectors and hiding.
Maybe he was having a nightmare? Nikeath suggested sleepily. Tiramnet let herself get tugged down the hallway, following Piden.
It's possible, Tira admitted. And he has two salamandyrs. They bond very tightly -- if they got into a fight while he was sleeping, it would probably affect him oddly. She traced her left down her right arm until she hit Piden's hand, laying her own hand over his and trying to be comforting. it was something she wasn't all that good at, after all.
"It'll be okay," she said in her best soothing tones, which she used with injured animals. "I'll watch over you. You'll be safe." I'll let him get back to sleep and then sneak out, Tira told Nikeath. I wanted to get some archery practice in before we go out on sweep. Where's our flight-path today?
Worry about it later, the green replied, stretching out on her ledge. There was sunning to do.

The green turned on the bronze salamandyr. At her demand, Dusk flew closer, hissing. After he ran away, she urged them on, and Dusk gladly followed. He would protect her. She had to love him! She would love him. He would catch her. His wings beat almost frantically, desperate to have the affection of a female. Dusk found his wings weren't nearly as fast as the bright blue behind him.
He was strong, not fast. He had the upper hand, in his mind, anyways. His clutchmother was a salamandyr, so naturally she would pick him. Obviously she deserved better than the moody salamadyr men, and she would much rather what she knew, yes? So of course, the sensible choice was him, as he was also superior to every other fire lizard joining the chase. Yes, naturally.
Renn and Indo, still tied, were in the rear. Having joined later than the other two, they worked their wings to pass the pinkish brown. They found themselves just behind, when Indo started losing speed. Renn zoomed past his brother, having somewhat more endurance. She would be his! Pretty, pretty salamandyr green would be all his.
Indo was not the kind to give up, so he paused for a moment before flying back to his old pace. He was still behind. If he had been closer to her, he would have caught her by now. Stupid Eselda being farther away. He had to catch her. He had to.

Clingy laid curled up next to his stupidloves newest pet. Though the Green-thing constantly considered herself not a pet. She said Dragon, as if it was any better then mandyr! Clingy sighed as he tried to drift off, but some part of him was very confused at sensations in him. Green-thing-Tarath was asleep, and so was supidlove...
Then a tingle started in the male - between his legs. He looked down at his crotch. Was it time to make water? No this was a different kind of tingle. Confusion swept through her as the tingle increased. He squeaked in confusion as he stretched out a little. Wiggling his tail and blinking more so at the crotch that kept tingling.
Oh! Now his legs tingled. Be back. Stupidlove. Sleep. he exclaimed as he ran from the room. Had to find the reason he was tingling! He had to find the reasssonnnnn
Meagen bolted awake, having crashed for a nap. Tarath had an odd sleep schedule - but she would deal with it. She sighed as she swung her leg over as the wave of lust just hit her in the face. He was gone - Clingy was gone. "Shards! Jays!" Meagen muttered as she bit her lip. She had to keep her mind calm - as to not awaken or damage Tarath.
The green was damaged already - so Meagen believed - she didn't need it to be moreso. She shook her head and sighed softly her hands rubbing her temples. She needed to run through her stretches, and start her fighting practice. Maybe that would distract her enough - for now. She didn't need to risk Tarath.
It took her little bit - the moment she got control was the moment Clingy saw the Green. Meagen lost her concentration again and had to work to regain it.
Hategreen! Clingy bad! the Mandyr exclaimed towards the running green.

With a snap of his jaws in Red's direction, Shells slunk into the forest, abandoning the chase. He had been betrayed, and he should have known - lesser colors were, of course, lesser, and could not be trusted. He had thought they were with him, but really, the were after her, wanting her attention. Well, he was better than all of them, anyway. He'd just go find a firelizard nest and snack on some eggs. Yes, that would make him feel much better.
Red approved. She offered a special touch to the stout Blue with speckles on his nose and the pinky (distinctly NOT red) brown. They had gone out of their way to chase off the Scary One, the one she Didn't Want. Good, she told them, back to her usual taciturn self. The new blue Mandyr was also granted a glance, but Red was generally a quiet Mandyr, and she was pretty close to out of words for the month. The others were not any less in her mind, but she did want to thank the ones who had stuck their necks out for her, who had literally faced down a bronze. Very nice.
But they wouldn't catch her that quickly. She had lots of firelizards after her (four, not a bad turnout), so she figured she would make it harder on them. She didn't fly, after all. So she tucked her wings away and scampered down the nearest treetrunk, leaping from branch to branch and then to the ground. From there she actually darted into a small pile of loam, squirming out the other side and scattering decomposed leaves in her wake. A root loomed ahead of her and she dove through the arch it made- maybe it would snag a fat one! She was a very little green, after all. Trilling in delight (not a sound that ever came out of Red), she continued to dart among the tree roots, forcing the firelizards to fly low if they wanted to keep track of her. So far, she was pleased.
With the threat gone, Piden relaxed visibly. Something was confusing him, though. He was supposed to have many more protectors, not that he didn't think Tira was capable, but... still. There should be more. At least two - The Devil should be here, and he knew that Blue from somewhere, too. They were missing, which distressed Piden a little, but Tira's hand felt so good in his own. If the others showed up he would give them due consideration, but for now she was enough. More than enough.
As Red's mood shifted, Piden's had, too. The Salamandyr was now fully aware that she wanted to mate, needed to mate, and that was quickly spilling over into Piden's thoughts. Pidesk got up silently and padded out, brushing past Tira in the dark. He would give his handler some privacy, for now at least. Piden closed the door but left it unlocked, then leaned his head against it, eyeing the dark patch that was Tiramnet. "Pidesk will watch the door," he claimed, turning towards her. "We're safe now." Without another word he closed the distance between them in a single step, sliding his arms tight around her waist and leaning down to bury his face in her neck, nipping slightly. Probably not sleepwalking.

It was more than a little odd to be walking with almost no light, but Tira's eyes were slowly adjusting. It wasn't truly pitch black, so there must have been some sort of light source somewhere, even if diffuse. She was a bit surprised that the wherhandlers didn't use shielded glows -- though perhaps, since it was noon (and thus the middle of their sleeping cycle), any glows the handlers would use to get dressed and move about would be completely covered. Though Tiramnet was quite adept at moving about in the dark of the night, that was under the light of the stars, at the very least. Not the faintest brush of light allowing only the barest object delineation as a denser patch of black.
Something large brushed past her leg as Piden led her into his quarters. His wher, she presumed, a fact confirmed by his words. Pidesk. Perhaps she'd get a chance to meet him when his handler was in a slightly more awa-- oh my. Tira's eyes went wide as Piden tugged her hips to meet his, arms wrapped around her waist. His lips met her neck, and then teeth. She gasped, surprised but not unhappy.
I don't think he was having a nightmare, Tiramnet murmured to her dragon, tracing her hands along Piden's bare back to splay her fingers across his shoulders, pulling him a little tighter.
Well, there's a salamandyr running. Might be one of his, or something. Nikeath seemed irritated to be bothered. She was sunning, after all. Hers getting involved in Flight-mothing was perfectly fine with her, as Tiramnet well knew.
Mmm, was Tira's only response as she let her ornery dragon be, turning her attention fully on Piden. She was perfectly fine with Flightlust (or Runlust, as the case seemed to call for), so long as Pidesk didn't mind (and he didn't seem to). Tiramnet had Flight-mothed before, besides having her dragon Rise every so often. And Piden was certainly not a poor specimen of manhood. She chuckled slightly, under her breath, enjoying herself. Hopefully Piden wasn't one to have a heart attack when waking up after a Flight...

Auran gave Shells a hiss of disapproval as he left. He was almost disappointed not to get another chance to dive at him. Let him run away, Auran would prove he was a far better creature then that worm. Now that the red pest was dealt with, the blue's entire attention. Hadn't she approved of his brave deeds? He rumbled happily at her brief attention. He was proud to defend her and he would be thrilled to fly the skies in her honor!
Now the chase was on! Auran tucked his wings close and dove after Red. He wanted to prove he could follow her to the end, whatever the obstacle. He was a stubborn fire lizard and a determined one. He dodged branches with a flick of his tail, keeping his body as close to the trunk as he could. He pulled up just above the brush. The beat of his large wings sent leaves scattering to the winds. He could have easily gone over the root of course, but he was sure that wasn't what she wanted. He could go anywhere she could!
Auran was still going fast with the momentum of his dive. He tucked his wings close and stretched out to his full length. Even so, his bulky sides scraped the root as he passed. He payed the irritation no mind. He was going to follow Red! Let her bring on any challenge! With a few flaps he regained his speed and a little more height. He still kept as low as possible as he followed her path through the roots. He refused to lose her now.

Denial hissed, a low sound, promising vengance on the little greentreat and whatever others there were around just as soon as Denial found them. She’d teach her snacks not to run away, and there was no one out here to see Denial eat them. The firelizard wiggled in absolute delight at the thought. Ah-ha she spied The Devil…
The Devil ran, climbed, bounded, and gilded, hot on the trail (or so she hoped) of the green she knew was out there somewhere close. Puasing for a moment the green rose on her hind legs and looked around. And shrieked in fury and Denial pounced on her. MURDER MURDER RED MURDER! UGLYUGLYUGLYYYYYY! The salamandyr howled writhing around on her back, lashing out with all four sets of sturdy claws and landing frenzied bite after bite on Denial’s muzzle.
Denial pulled back, startled. It was biting her! A lot! Her snack was so not supposed to be biting her back! It was supposed to be eaten. As the firelizard recoiled The Devil wriggled away, frilled spitefully and darted off before the firelizard could pursue her further. Denial gave a last spiteful hiss, she wasn’t chasing that any further, clearly she’d have to sneak up while it was sleeping. Ah but look there, a bigger snack, a bronze snack! Denial slithered off in pursuit of Shells instead, she’d get this one for sure!
The Devil ran, grumbling to herself, but with no further heed paid to Denial. She was on the move after all, and the ugly was too slow, to stupid, and too bitten to follow her. Oh there was her lovely green again! A little chirp escaped The Devil on seeing Red. How pretty she was, and how quick! Ew, and how many uglies actually thought they seriously had a chance with Red? Good thing The Devil was here!
The green fell into the chase with vigour, running along the ground and sliding under a curving root. Beat that uglies! The Devil wove in and out of more roots, as fast as ever she could, almost as frantic in her desire to impress Red as she had been to get away from Denial.
Yoalla howled, screeched madly and fought the entangling covers of her bed. She wanted to chase and something was trying to eat her! ‘Getoffme! Ugly!’ she barked the command at the inamiate objects and gripped the topmost blanket in her teeth shaking it like a canine with a rodent. Lao chattered from his corner of the room. It was just blankets, not trying to eat her, he promised. Yosk blinked and shook her head once, giving a low chirp of her own. The Devil, she projected the idea to Lao with disgust, and grabbed the blankets herself, hauling them backwards, and rolling her handler off the bed as she did so.
Free! Yoalla sprang to her feet, wildly scanning the dark room for whatever had attacked her. Gone! Haha! She was fearsome! Now where was her green? Another look around the room. Oh no! She’d gotten away while Yoalla was fighting. Moving swiftly to the door with the kind of grace only someone well used to pitch dark could manage without being able to see Yoalla let herself out into the corridor, without bothering to pick up any clothing. Which way, which way? Her mind pulled her in the direction of Piden’s room, but her bond with The Devil told her Red was outside. Uncertainly Yoalla took several steps in each direction before shaking her head and standing still. Surely Red would call her. ‘Red? Where are you Redrum?’ She called, singsong, and waited for her green to answer, she had to answer, she didn’t want an uglyslave thing, right?

Clingy darted faster after the little green - hissing at the retreating bronze. This was his first chase he had to win! He had to have that victory over his head. It was a pretty green - not the green he wanted though. He would have his pretty green! He'd have her! He knew that his little person was having problems - but he didn't care. He wanted the green!
He followed her slightly to the right, watching all her movements. Good thing he was a small blue! He darted through the loop of roots - ignoring all the other males. He would expend his energy to get near her! Yes he would. A quick burst and the little blue was darting fast ahead - only problem was he was still very young. Unless she chose him - he wouldn't last much longer. He'd do it though! Because he wanted her so badly - and he had already come so far.
