Wherhandler / Senior Journeyman Harper
Physical Appearance;
Eikane is doubley cursed, in his own opinion of course. Not only does he easily look three to four turns older than he really is he is also rather feminine looking sometimes. More so when he's freshly shaven and wearing lighter colours and his hair falls just so. Speaking of his dirty-blonde hair, it hangs in waves to his shoulders and is always, always kept clean. The absence of sun in his life has caused a physical change; his tanned skin is no more, though he's not pastey in his paleness. His hair, too, has darkened a little without the sun bleaching it. Dark - almost black, really - brown eyes sit above a somewhat large and slightly upturned nose. The latter is perhaps his most masculine feature on his face.
Though not as tall as some of the giants of the South, Eikane is a fairly tall person at 6'1. This is probably what saves him from being recognized as a female. That and the masculine frame he bears. He's rather wiry in build but it's obvious that he has muscles and that he's not quite as weak as he looks upon first glance. Eikane has large hands with long, slender fingers that have formed rough pads from turns of Harpering. Ever since an incident that resulted in his left leg being fractured in three places, he has sported a limp and low-level chronic pain in his left leg. Also as a result, he no longer wears shorts. Only long pants will do. For the most part that hasn't changed his style much. He never wore a whole lot of shorts anyways. He tends to wear paler colours rather than bold ones.
Personality;
Fussy. If one were forced to describe Eikane in one word, that would be it. He is absolutely obsessed with organization and cleanliness. Everything has to be just right or he's liable to have a fit. Often he can be seen chewing out a Drudge or apprentice and then showing them how to do the job right. Some people have been known to take advantage of this by purposely doing a horrible job and of course Eikane would eventually notice but do it anyways.
Fussiness is not Eikane's only facet. The Harper is extraordinarily gullible, which is an odd trait for a Harper. He will honestly believe pretty much anything but a truly outrageous lie. No matter how much you trick this Harper he will never anger. The only thing that does anger him is anything that contradicts order and cleanliness. This makes him a surprisingly good teacher for young children, especially when taken into account with his patience.
Eikane is also something of a showoff. He is talented and he knows it. He's skilled at teaching, playing music (though he can't write any for the life of him), he was even a fair dancer before the limp. However, his true talent is art. He is a brilliant visual artist. When he isn't being fussy or performing his duties as a Harper he is generally showing off. Mostly in the form of playing music in a spot for all to hear but he'll occasionally put up a picture somewhere. This is an odd occurance, for his art is his is rather precious to him. He keeps something of a visual diary in which most of his non-commissioned work resides.
For all of these reasons Eikane canoccasionallyget on peoples' nerves. He often does not realize just how annoying he is. For those that manage to get past his flaws, Eikane can be quite kindly. He will most likely latch onto his friends any time he sees them and demand to know everything about how their life has been going. Good luck getting him to say anything about his own life though. Despite being a show off of his talents, he feels its rude to constantly talk about himself all the time. Those who want to become good friends with him will have to put considerable effort into it.
History;
Birth and Early Turns (2992-3002)
Eikane was born in Southern Boll to the Lady Holder's sister, Laeina, and her husband Tekanol. He also has four sister and thus grew up in a very feminine environment. That he enjoyed cleaning and was frequently dressed in his older sister's clothes like a doll was the cause of mild bullying from other noble-born children. Though he was well loved by his family he was also an embarassment. When he became old enough to apprentice into a craft he was sent to Harper Hall despite their poor reputation. Maybe, just maybe, he would man up while he was there and come back more useful than he'd been before.
Harper Hall (3002-3011)
Life was indeed tough in the craft. It was practice and work from early in the morning to late at night. Still, Eikane tried his hardest at everything and most things came easily to him. He largely ignored stories about the war and even Thread didn't faze him too badly. He was a little detached from it considering he had his training and a home to return to afterwards. His life was pretty much set for him. When he was nineteen he finally Walked the tables, admittedly a bit late for an apprentice, especially a musical prodigy. The Masters had painstakingly hammered as much theory as possible into his mind but he'd never gotten the hang of composition, no matter how hard he tried. He understood the theory but he seemed to lack the creativity to create using music. His creativity was far too occupied in visual art.
Travelling Journeyman (3011-3013)
Eikane spent his days travelling place to place for two turns, spreading news and teaching children what was allowed to be taught. It was during these two turns he met Vermai. She did not travel with him but he always had her to return to. He never did end up returning to Southern Boll like he'd intended. Plans change in time. He was all set to propose to Vermai and settle down but when he returned to find her she'd disappeared without a word. He asked for a permanent station anyways and was sent to Selenitas Weyr with fellow Harper Dmitri. Together they decided to join in on the candidate experience (mostly to see what it was about, rather than to Impress) and both ended up Impressing to whers. Only...Eikane Impressed gold Eikask!
Selenitas Weyr and Changes (3013-3017)
Wherlinghood was strange but not as strange as having something invading Eikane's mind. He found his wher overbearing and annoying in the beginning though he eventually let his bond with her grow and learned to love her. When he Impressed his blue salamandyr Nocturne he was a little more familiar with the idea of mindmates and quickly grew fond of the blue despite his disposition. He was also given a feline, Riker, as a gift much to his surprise. Life was not as he planned but despite the plague, river poisoning, and Fort's attack he found enjoyment in it because he grew close to Nautic. Not to say he wasn't friends with a couple other wherhandlers, but Nautic was special to him in the way Vermai had been. After flirting with the greenhandler for a while he finally kissed nautic at a Gather and so they became weyrmates. Wasteland's takeover affected him and his pleasantly surprising life little.
Eikane and Eikask had no one they knew chased away from the weyr and the Wastelanders largely left them alone so he had nothing to complain about. He even managed to have some fun at the Hyphen Gather before the exiles were discovered there. The only real thing to affect him since the takeover was ironically not connected to the Wastelanders at all. A small earthquake caused a collapse of the gemstone mine while he and his class were inside. His left leg was trapped under rubble until he was found and released. The injury that resulted left him limping from then onward, after some time in the infirmary of course.
Following that earthquake was a far larger one that decimating the weyr and forced the merge between Selenitas and Burimyu. Eikane was put on the Council there as a representative of the wherhandlers and he became busier than ever. The pet plague very nearly claimed his salamandyr's mate and his best friend's gold salamandyr. Nocturne was thankfully safe and the sickness eventually had a cure. Things were fairly calm for a while. Calm enough that he recognized Nautic's desire for a child and sought to do something about it. He wasn't quite ready for a child but ideas started churning in his mind.
Night Terrors (3018)
The next turn brought about a return of the records room monsters that had killed Meira. The attack left the wherhandlers two handlers short but also provided corpses of the creatures to be dissected. It also provided Eikane further impetus to propose to Nautic. The war brewing in the north was of little consequence to him as he took on the responsibility of organizing the handlers against the threat of night creatures and assisted in planning the eventual wedding between himself and Nautic. They got hitched without a hitch - heh - which opened a different can of worms, so to speak. The whole topic of kids and adopting had once again cropped up and finally Eikane capitulated - but not without a condition. If they were gonna adopt they might as well skip the most messy stage of all: infancy. Which is when Nautic brought up his creche friend having to move back to her family's Hold because she lost her husband and oh, right, she had a kid she wanted to give up for adoption. Thus they adopted Einata and so began Eikane's love affair with his daughter.
To the Hold (3019-present)
There was some minor involvement of the handlers in the war but not a lot which left Eikane with more time for his family and Selenitas' defence during the night. He was a loving if tentative father to Einata who already had him wrapped around her finger as a toddler. The natural bumps of being a family with a new child came and went just as the great war did and in short order the family found themselves bundled off to Selenitas Hold. Evidently a Goldhandler trained in Harper craft was preferred in a Hold over a younger Goldhandler who's weyrmate knew Glass craft. Oh well, Eikane had done his best to mentor Kaius since his graduation from wherlinghood and he had become surprisingly good friends with Sena as well. He didn't begrudge them (too much) for getting to stay in the weyr. Besides, Erilena, Dmitri, and their kids were going to Selenitas Hold as well so at least he was sticking with his brother-like friend. They settled in the Hold and while Eikask disliked it initially she realized she also had rule of the place too. The Holders seemed to have more power lately anyway so she'd just work her way up from there now that the war was over. Also, despite whatever ill feelings may have been between them, Dmisk's presence mollified her some. Eikane wasn't complaining...much.

9 (May 3013)
Gold #FFFBB8
Physical Appearance;
A large wher, Eikask is; she’ll be one of the largest seen in quite awhile and it’s clear that were she bulky, she’d be quite the eye-catcher. However, Eikask isn’t; her slender form betrays her on that count, for Eikask much more resembles a dainty green than a muscled queen. That’s not to say she isn't beautiful – there’s no doubting that she is – but Eikask certainly isn’t going to be winning any strength competitions soon, and it’s likely that she’ll often be overlooked because her slim frame detracts from her overall size. But an impressive silhouette, Eikask does cut; a long, whippy body with a tail equally slender, deviously quick at snapping through the air; she’s a leggy creature, with her legs long and on the slender side, but should she desire it, frequent exercise will produce wiry muscle around her entire body. Never will she fill out her form, and as a result she looks rather gangly, especially since her head is (both figuratively and literally) a little on the big side for her body. It’s just barely noticeable, and not even big enough to be pinpointed – she simply looks off. On the upside, though, her wings are positively huge; quite easily will Eikask be able to glide should she desire to do so.
And should she desire to do so, Eikask will be nothing short of elegant in the air. She’s intelligent enough that she can put good use to the lower winds and air currents, and arrogant enough to be fearless; if Eikask takes to the air (which she might or might not, depending on her upbringing), she’ll be unstoppable, her Runs ones that no male can ever forget. If, for whatever reason, Eikask does not discover her grace in the air, she’ll simply be ‘that clumsy’ queen, for on the ground her gangly, leggy form is simply that: Clumsy. Much to her rage, she’ll never acquire naturally that fluid, smooth gait that she so longs for. As a wherling, her legs will often get tangled, and much too often will her face meet the ground in a short, brief, and utterly undignified conversation; even as she grows, this malady will not entirely fade, though Eikask certainly will spend a lot more time upright and properly standing as opposed to sprawling over the ground. In time, she will acquire some measure of grace, though it will never come naturally – it requires concentration.
Very pale gold is Eikask’s hide. It looks almost faded, as if somebody took new, bright gold and covered it with a layer of white, bleaching out the color. Just slightly, but it’s enough that Eikask will never receive as much attention as she wants – she’s not bright enough for every eye to turn her way. She is, however, very metallic to make up for her lightness. Never will another gold shine as brightly as she! (At least, in her opinion.) Given that the two moons’ light is far from sufficient to match that of Rukbat, it’s probably safe to presume that Eikask would, indeed, look incredible in full light. Every movement will gleam and catch the light; every surface of her skin seems to glow faintly; her hide has the ability, it seems, to capture moonlight and re-emit it in much more vibrant shades than she took it in. A glowing, pale ghost, Eikask is – but this appearance is marred by deep, orange-gold eyeliner that circles each of her eyes, and then follows her muzzle down to her nostrils; a single, very clear rosette-marking of the same color is found on her left hindquarter, but over her entire body the same rosette markings are simply a shade darker than her original color, visible as the faintest illusions, turning Eikask into a glowing, pale ghost feline-wher.
Personality;
Eikask is undoubtedly an attention-seeker. This gold likes to be looked at, for whatever reason – be it awe, love, adoration, annoyance – even hatred is preferable to being ignored. While she can stand it if not everybody in the room, in the Weyr, is looking at her, Hers must be focused on her as much as possible. Even if his full focus is not solely upon her, Eikask insists that, if he is able, he must at least be petting her at all times, as befits a queen of her splendor. Jealous, Eikask undeniably is; Hers belongs solely to her. Her claim is there and she was there first. All others come second, and they will never be as important as she is – and Hers must understand that to be true. While Eikask, however grudgingly, allows the attention to be shared (for she understands that Hers is perfect, is amazing enough, that others do want his company), the one thing she cannot stand is if Hers claims to love another female. That simply will not do. Friendships are fine; acquaintances are fine; even enemies are fine by Eikask. But a lover…? Oh, no, no; she’ll fix that, she will! No lovers allowed for Hers. Those foolish human-women should find their own males, for this one is hers, and will always be Hers.
This possessiveness extends to any wher or creature that Eikask decides belongs to her, too. Though this gold treats them as disdainfully, as contemptuously, as she does any other creature, rest assured that once Eikask has claimed you, you will know it. She claims only males, of any species, and females will be chased away from them viciously if Eikask views them as a threat. Fortunately for the Weyr’s females and males alike, Eikask is intelligent – and arrogant. This gold is capable of processing logic and emotions to an almost alarming degree; if only she would put her mind to it, likely she could accomplish much. However, Eikask doesn’t, usually, without encouragement – instead, her arrogance leads her on, and will likely lead her off of a cliff if Hers does not interfere once in a while, for Eikask seems to think that she should not only lead all the whers, but the entire Weyr: Those dragons don’t deserve to be Senior queen; that should be her position. Fortunately for her reputation, Eikask does not demonstrate her ambition nearly as openly as she does her jealousy. She does, however, have no problem treating everybody with a slight condescension. They’re not as good as she is, after all…
Though many a male will be claimed, Eikask does not openly flirt with any but the highest. Dragons will be claimed, but never will they be flirted with; the same goes for salamandyrs and firelizards. Whers – bronze whers, brown whers – are the only ones out of her varied collection of males – that Eikask will ever go out of her way to flirt with, purr and rub against – because they, ultimately, once her (admittedly nonexistent) plans succeed, will be the ones to be Weyrleader! Such plans should be met with dismay soon enough from Hers, for none of them ever seem to take a definite, concrete shape, and certainly Eikask, while she does plot, never seems to try and execute any of the plans. She’s too intelligent for that; she’d much rather wait till the War’s over before she takes over, please and thank you! Everyone knows the Senior Weyrwoman is the first to be attacked. Every secret, every ambition and every plan, every name of every wher that she’s fond of – all will be told to her handler. But nobody else. Outwardly, Eikask is simply an arrogant queen who likes to be the center of attention, and nothing more; to her handler, she’s a devious little vixen determined to rule to Weyr. One should bid her good luck: She certainly will need it…
Nocturne

Blue #1F4EA5
9 (July 3013)
Blue #1F4EA5
Physical Appearance;
On the small side for a blue, this salamandyr is one that is more likely to make people think of Terran-lizards than any of his own sleek, elegant species. His body is built average for a salamandyr, flattened out almost to the point of appearing as though he’s unusually wide. His tail is bizarre for a salamandyr, coming out thicker than the normal tail type of his species, without the mobility that most salamandyrs possess. It’s also significantly shorter and thus somewhat bizarre to behold, barely the length of his body as opposed to that of most ‘mandyrs. His legs are somewhat shorter as well, though not noticeably so; at least, he doesn’t appear peculiar when running about. What does look odd is how positively bitty his wings are, looking more like patterns in his hide when they’re flattened against his body than actual wings, and he can flare them but it really doesn’t look terribly impressive. The only part of him that could appear remotely threatening is his face, which is on the rounder side, with defined eyes that have a decidedly slanted appearance. Creepy.
A wonderful array of different shades of blue make up his body, making it hard to decipher whether or not he’s light or dark. Indeed, the backwash of his body resembles a mingling of salt and pepper in azure. The majority of his body is a dark, almost twilight shade of blue – royal in its simplicity, elegant like velvet, but rough, as if touching his hide he’d be bumpy and rigid. Mingled amidst that shade is a lighter blue like sapphires that glints bizarrely when caught by light, and the whole appearance is accompanied by thousands of pale blue spots that cover his back and break into almost ringlets down his tail. His head, around his face and muzzle, is almost perfectly midnight, though – definitely a pretty creature to behold.
Personality;
Grouchy would be a good word to describe this salamandyr. For all appearances, he’s exceptionally unfriendly. In fact, he goes out of his way to repel any other creature who tries to befriend him, with casually sniped insults edged in poisonous tones, or simple lack of acknowledgment. A master of dirty looks, this little guy has no tolerance for the average person and instead spends much of his time trying to avoid any kind of contact. His preferred perches are high up or hidden away, where no one can see him, and he particularly likes lurking in small cervices that make it easy to overlook his presence entirely. Observing is one of his favorite pastimes – one might describe it as people watching. The more he analyzes, the more he understands, and there’s no denying that this salamandyr is intelligent (if only he’d use those brains for something other than sniping at people and/or finding the ideal place to bite, he’d be a legend, but he thoroughly believes that infamy is better than fame). He does not tolerate strangers touching him and would really rather they not speak to him, too. And if they insist on bothering him? Well, he’s got teeth and claws, and that spot between their fingers looks particularly tasty to chomp down on. Annoyances.
With his mindmate, this salamandyr still would not be easily identifiable as “friendly.” Loyal to a fault, though – that’s something that would fittingly describe him. Despite all of his scoffing and snarling, he always comes home, and if anyone so much as looks at his human-slave wrong, he’s got no problem tearing them a few new holes. And, seeing as he’s intelligent, one of his favored places to attack is the more sensitive parts of human anatomy – like eyes, lips, and nipples… He likes to leave scars, too, to remember him by. Do not mess with his. Turnabout is fair play as far as he’s concerned.
Many salamandyrs have nicer internal personalities. Perhaps this one does, too, though it’s certainly not prominent enough to ever merit noticing. Interestingly, though he’s vicious about biting, he won’t bite His. He usually prefers to remain hidden but if his mindmate’s in the room, he will stay on his human perch somewhere out of sight. He also talks more with His, however selectively, and his insults are reserved for everyone else. His chosen will quickly learn that the best way to placate this salamandyr is to be totally honest and accepting of him – the vicious side of him will never be turned on the one he chose. Likewise, he’s very selective in who he Chases, preferring creatures that will leave him alone afterwards. Possessive, clingy greens (of any species) are ignored. He doesn’t want anyone who will spend much time around him, though he’s certainly capable of being faithful. He’s just… not too eager to have a constant leech. Is it too much to ask for a hands-off relationship…?
