Weyr: Selenitas Weyr
Age: 14 (3009)
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Undecided
Rank: Bluerider
Weyr: Selenitas Weyr
Physical Appearance:
Puberty has been fairly kind, thus far, to S'l. Where once there was a somewhat pudgy kid, training and age have slimmed him down some - with the latter giving him some more height. Standing at roughly 5'6" he will probably grow to be a few inches taller but will likely never quite hit 6'. His face still has a somewhat round look to it, making him seem even younger than he is - which he secretly hates. His hair color is typically a medium brown hue though sometimes in the summer it is lighter, almost blonde-ish depending on how much time he spends in the sun. As of now he keeps it around chin to shoulder length, parting on either side of his face; it is likely as he gets older he'll trim it down much shorter. He could be described as *cute*, though *handsome* might be a stretch - and it is unlikely *rugged* will ever come to mind even as he grows up and fills into more of a man. Typical of the rest of his family he has very expressive hazel eyes.
((Suggested play-by: Jonathan Taylor Thomas circa '95 in Tom and Huck))
Personality:
Friendly, generally happy, easy-going. S'l isn't one known for being aggressive or even argumentative. He's fairly passive as far as most things go, though at times he can be a bit passionate. He has no problem letting others 'win' when need be, or stepping out of the limelight - he got enough of that from his mother growing up as the baby of the family. Sometimes he may come across as being a *bit* of a spoiled brat, since he does tend to prefer things go his way. However since Impression he's been much less focused on himself and more focused on others, especially his lovely Blue.
He has a fierce love of family - blood and otherwise. Despite his brother's apparent hatred towards him, S'l has no harsh feelings for Teral. He'd rather forgive and forget than hold grudges.
History:
The last born to the vinter Vestral and the kitchen worker Salla - Sal was often 'babied', or so his older siblings liked to claim. While they grew up mostly in the creche (at least while their parents were working), Sal got 'special' treatment. Salla took her youngest with her to the kitchens a number of times, swaddled up and held against her chest with blankets while she worked. As he got too big to carry around everywhere she did leave him to the creche to be tended to, but often times she would sneak out of the kitchen a bit early and bring him pastries. Spoiled, it seemed, was Sal's middle name through most of his childhood.
Pastries, his mother, and his siblings filled most of Sal's earliest childhood memories - nothing truly notable occured in his short life worth remembering. The stuff that he would learn about later sure seemed important, but when it all unfolded he was just a mere child.
He grew up hearing his older brother talk about how he would some day become a dragonrider - and it was common for the children to all attend hatchings. From the Stands of course, as none of them were old enough to be Candidates. That all changed when suddenly his parents forbade him and his siblings from attending Hatchings. His mother was very stern about not wanting her children present. Though Salla would never say why, Sal would later learn that it was due to the Wastelanders and the cullings they performed.
It wasn't really until Sal was around 8 turns old that anything truly memorable occured. (3017 Unfortunately for his family, it was memorable in a terrible way. It was bad enough that the whole world seemed to shake and rip apart - that the walls of their home fell down around them. On top of that though, true tragedy struck when his elder brother Teral was caught beneath rubble and lost his left leg after infection set in. He had dreamt of being a dragon Candidate up until that point, and losing his leg ruined his chances of ever becoming a dragonrider or a wherhandler. Though his spirit was crushed he did physically recover - and eventually settled into taking up the vinter craft like his father later in life.
They were all moved along with riders, handlers, and other weyrfolk to the 'new' Selenitas Weyr - which Sal found overly exciting in his young age. He wanted nothing more than to explore, and could never understand why the lower floors of the Weyr were blocked off. Resilient thanks to his young age, the turns continued on without much of a change for Sal or his family. That is until the dragon wars finally came to a head - and then ended when Selenitas and Benden teamed up against Fort. The Summit that followed dictated that their family must move again, this time to Selenitas Hold - they were being forced from the Weyr he had lived almost his whole life in.
Shortly after arriving at the Hold there was a wher hatching, and the three siblings attended together - just to watch. Sal was facinated by the whers, he always had been. His sister had no interest in whers really, just as she had shown little to no interest in dragons. Teral was interested, but due to his missing limb he would be unable to Impress. It was with great surprise for the three siblings (and later their parents, as they had sneaked out in the middle of the night to attend the hatching) that his sister Vessa Impressed a green wher! Sal encouraged his older sister to follow through with the unlikely 'Impression' and watched in awe as she cut her palm to solidify the bond to her new wher - Vessk.
So it was that his sister Vessa became a wherling - and Sal saw little of her over the next half turn as she took on wherling training. Still, the youngest brother was proud of his sister and always encouraging - unlike Teral who spent most of his time sulking despite how talented he seemed to be at being a vinter. Teral's sullen mood continued to grow more and more remorse, especially when Vestral passed away at the end of 3021.
Despite feeling as though he should stay behind to comfort his mother since his brother was little to no use in that department, and Vessa was busy with being a handler - when it finally came time for a tithe of 'Candidates' to be sent to the Weyr, Sal went. He had 'failed' to pick up any real craft. Instead he had managed to do just fine on his own doing odd jobs around various farmsteads in the area. Once at the Weyr he was looked over by a Searchdragon and found suitable for Candidacy. However he failed to Impress and was sent back to the Hold; only to return the following turn where he stood for Millieth and Mavenath's clutch. While on the sands he was sure he would be passed over - being one of the last few to Impress. However Impress he did, a gorgeous looking Blue named Syntymath - and Sal became S'l.
Though his handler sister, Vessa, was elated for him - Teral was quite the opposite. The fact both his siblings got to live out his dreams sent Teral into further seclusion from his siblings - cutting off all ties to them when their mother Salla passed at the turn of 3023.
Despite the loss of his mother, S'l has remained resilient as ever. Being a very young full rider has had its ups and downs for S'l and for Syntymath, but he feels he has settled into his new role fairly well and knows if he ever needs help, there's a handler not too far away who would between to his side in an instant.
