Hold: Selenitas Hold
Age: 17 (3006)
Gender: Female
Sexual Orientation: Undecided
Rank: Green Wherhandler
Hold: Selenitas Hold
Physical Appearance:
Despite her father being rather tall and her mother being rather plain looking, Vessa was born to be absolutely adorable - and short. Standing at a mere 5'1" it was clear she didn't win the genetic draw when it came to height. Even though she was short she didn't appear mousey by any means, she had curves in all the right places with long naturally wavy brown hair. She rarely cut it unless she needed to, and on more than one occasion it reached past her rear in length. Vessa was never built to be stick thin and would always carry a healthy amount of 'extra' weight on her frame, but she carries it well so it is typically not overly obvious. She'd never be called 'fat' though some may call her 'chubby'. Eyes are a lovely hazel hue, somewhat of a mix of brown, green, and blue all melded into one color.
Personality:
You know the saying 'big things sometimes come in small packages'? Cliche as it is - that's Vessa summed up in a phrase. What she lacks in height she makes up for in personality. She is typically quite friendly, easy going, and thanks to her childhood being in the south she is fairly well rounded as well. At times she can be quick to anger, typical woman - right? She can be a bit catty as well, not all can be peaches and cream. Gossipy too, but not all the time as she likes to think she's above all that.
Overall she's someone you'd be glad to call a friend but even if you're on her bad side you don't have to fret too much. Revenge is petty in her mind and she'd rather just move on than linger on past disagreements.
History:
Being weyrbred may have been glamorous for some, but for Vessa it was nothing spectacular. Perhaps it was because rather than being born to riders or even handlers, Vessa was the daughter of Vestral and Salla - plain weyrfolk. Her father was an experienced vinter who had been born in the north but transferred south to Selenitas Hold once he was a journeyman. It was there he met Salla, who while she didn't have knots from any crafthall could cook like nobody's business. The two fell in love and were eventually Joined before Vestral moved them to the Weyr - Salla worked in the kitchens and Vestral helped ensure the Weyr never went without wines nearly as sweet and smooth as those from Benden.
It was inside the walls of Selenitas Weyr that Salla would give birth to their children; Vessa (3006), Teral (3008), and Sal (3009). Growing up in the lower caverns and spending time within creche now and then, Vessa's life was nothing special. Her earliest memories were innocent ones of childhood with her siblings and other weyrbrats.
Sure there were important events unfolding at the Weyr around her - but what did they matter to a child? Her parents never saw fit to mention such things to their children, and why should they? They deserved a childhood free of worries about politics, stolen eggs, and deaths. She knew something was going on during her 9th turn of life when there were new harder looking faces around the Weyr, and things became decidedly more serious. Her parents forbade her and her siblings from attending Hatchings - they were not Candidates but it did not matter, her mother was very stern about not wanting her children present even in the stands. Though Salla would never say why, Vessa learned later in life it was due to the Wastelanders. She remains grateful that she never had to witness any of the cullings.
Despite the fact Vestral went to the Hyphen Gather, the children were not permitted to go along. Travelling was dangerous, her parents had said. Vestral arrived back from the Gather earlier than expected, but would not explain why.
The most significant event of her childhood occured when she was 11 turns old (3017) when the earth shook and the Weyr crumbled all around them. Her family managed to escape - or rather most of them did. Vessa's brother Teral was caught beneath rubble and lost his left leg after infection set in. He had dreamt of being a dragon Candidate up until that point, and losing his leg ruined his chances of ever becoming a dragonrider or a wherhandler. Though his spirit was crushed he did physically recover - and eventually settled into taking up the vinter craft like his father later in life.
The family was relocated to the New Selenitas Weyr, located where a previously hidden Weyr, Burimyu had existed. It was in this same turn that more tragedy would strike for Vessa - as her lovely bronze firelizard, Aires, was taken from her when the 'pet plague' hit.
The next few turns were thankfully uneventful for the family, until the dragon wars came to a head and then finally were ended when Selenitas and Benden teamed up against Fort. At this point the 14 turn old girl had a few friends whose relatives were dragonriders, but no one she knew personally was a rider - so aside from the fact she lived in the Weyr she had nothing personal invested in any side. The Summit, however, directly affected her family - they were being forced from the Weyr she had lived her whole life in.
Vestral was a vinter, after all, crafthall trained. So when the Summit said that crafters must be sent to Holds their family was given the boot, so to speak. Heading to Selenitas Hold they settled into holdlife and that was that - until it wasn't so simple any more.
Shortly after arriving at the Hold there was a wher hatching, and the three siblings attended together - just to watch. Vessa had no interest in whers really, just as she had shown little to no interest in dragons. Teral was interested, but due to his missing limb he would be unable to impress, and Sal was still a turn too young. It was with great surprise for the three siblings (and later their parents, as they had sneaked out in the middle of the night to attend the hatching) that a rather rotund green hobbled her way and nosed her. At the insistence of Sal (not Teral, who would not speak to her after this) Vessa followed the goldhandler's instructions and cut her palm to solidify the bond to Vessk.
So it was that Vessa became a wherling - and while her parents were quite cross with her there was nothing to be done about it. She took up training under Eikane. A full wherhandler by 3021 she remained at Selenitas Hold where her and Vessk were assigned to helping watch the Hold proper - though at times they were sent to the outer areas within the Hold's territory. At the end of the turn her father passed away due to a short lived illness the healers of the Hold were unable to combat. Just after that, Sal was sent with the tithe to the Weyr where a Searchdragon found him suitable to Stand. However he failed to Impress and was sent back to the Hold; returning the following turn where he became S'l of Blue Syntymath.
Vessa was elated for her brother, though the fact both his siblings got to live out his dreams sent Teral into further seclusion from his sister and brother. The only family tie between them that kept them from going completely at odds was Salla, who passed at the beginning of 3023.
Name: Vessk
Color: Green (#)
Age: 3 turns (3020)
Dam and Sire: Eikask and Random-Brown
Physical Appearance:
The first thing most people notice about this wher is her size she is quite large, for a green, mostly due to carrying so much extra weight, nearly rivaling some smaller browns in terms of bulk, if not length or height. Her legs are thick and muscular, though her trunk is a bit smoother, even developing a bit of a hanging gut if her handler doesn't keep her active enough. Her face, though, despite the somewhat thuggish appearance of her body, appears quite friendly, with large, wide-set eyes, head knobs that slope slightly back from her skull, and a muzzle that naturally twists upward at the corner of the mouth, giving her the appearance of a smile. Her wings are quite underdeveloped, obviously unable to sustain her for even short glides, and are usually held tucked tight against her back. Her bulk, while preventing as much maneuverability as her lither brethren, allows her to simply bowl over or through most anything that gets in her way. Her tail, as well, is a bit shorter than average, and quite thick, allowing the wher to thwack things that displease her, or flat surfaces to make a loud slap to get the attention of those nearby, something she enjoys doing whenever possible.
Color-wise, she can best be described as a green sunrise, captured in wher form. Her feet are quite a dark shade of hunter green, as well as the tip of her tail, though it slowly brightens until her thighs and the base of her tail are more of a fern green. Her underside shares this shade, but her coloration continues to brighten as it moves up her body, and towards her head, with her mid-flank bearing an apple-green shade, and her shoulders being a distinct yellow-green. Traveling up her neck, the shade brightens to a spring bud green by the time it reaches her jawline, and finally her head is a bright lime green, with the two tips of her head knobs bearing a nearly completely yellow shade of green, making her appear to have two small suns perched atop her skull.
Personality:
If this girl could be summed up in one word, it would be boisterous. She loves to live large, and she has little patience for those who don't do what they need to in order to get what they want. If she wants something, she'll attempt to take it, and only if she's physically prevented from claiming something will she attempt a more diplomatic approach. She will be slightly more respectful of those things belonging to Hers, but only just, and seems to live by the philosophy of better to ask forgiveness than permission.
In terms of relationships, she loves as hard as she lives, and seems to have a boundless reserve of affection to give out. It takes quite a serious matter for someone to become 'unlovable' in her eyes, and she loves surrounding herself with those who are as affectionate as she is. The only problem arises when it becomes clear that she isn't a fan of taking no for an answer, she seems convinced that it only takes enough pestering and physically affectionate actions in order to turn even the glummest creature, be it person or wher, to a brighter state of mind, and combined with her habit of using her bulk to corner those she is trying to cheer up, she is often found with a grumpy companion trapped between her and an unyielding wall as she rubs against them and sends them delightful images until they obey her and cheer up like she wants them to.
