Blue-gray wings sliced through the breeze-riddled air as the Bluepair decended, the crisp atmosphere becoming more fluid as they decreased in altitude. The ground rose to greet them and Wridelth silently touched down. Folding his wings tightly against his sides, the large, robotic dragon redistributed his weight as his claws sunk into the spring-softened ground. Syrene slid from his back. Is this location sufficiently pleasing? asked the Blue in his quirky multiples-of-five-words rule, smoothly swinging the tip of his tail like a perfectly timed metronome.
Dark brown eyes carefully scanned the area several times; first, to check for life that could potentially put them in danger, second, to evaluate the terrain. Wridelth had landed them just on the exterior lands of Inverness Weyr, where the Inverness River snaked close to the settlement. Although the ground was muddy and slick with the thawing of spring, a mountainside slope that the river bit into served as a safe enough spot to relax.
Wridelth took Syrene’s silence as an affirmative when the thin woman swiftly made her way onto the rocks overlooking the water. Turning to the water, the Blue took a few slow steps forward and simply stood in the shallows. Waves lapped over all four of his feet in an ice cold greeting.
Syrene lowered herself to the slightly warm rock, resting her back against a vertical, flat area of the mountain behind her. She watched Wridelth for a while, who continued to stand in the freezing water like a statue, completely unaffected by the temperature of the river. She leaned her head backward to rest it against the stone and allowed her eyes to drift shut for a few silent moments.
Today had been a busy day. Not that she had anything official to do, but Wridelth and the Rider had travelled globally. They had betweened to the remnants of Fort Weyr first, and then to Inverness. Although no words were exchanged between the two, Wridelth had known where to take her based on her mood of reminiscence. The Bluerider had walked through the dilapidated Fort while the sun rose, recollecting her childhood and her deceased parents. Wridelth then had taken her to see the battlefield where the Dragon War had ended. She visited the places where those she knew had died, spending the majority of her time at the location she had witnessed X’rx’s and Eveyth’s deaths. It was highly improbable that anybody would see the makeshift grave marker she had built for him, or the flowers she would often deposit on it.
Her corneas prickled behind her eyelids at the vivid memory. Sharp teeth sunk into her finger, causing Syrene to open her eyes. Queen, who had finally emerged from the warm folds of Syrene’s cloak, crawled his way with sharp claws up to His’ shoulder. Slavething not allowed to be sad, demanded the Bronze salamandyr, flicking his tail like a whip against her neck before curling up and nuzzling her skin in an rarely seen affectionate manner.
All things come to end. It is an inevitable fact. I must remind you that you and I will cease to exist in the future. I know, Wridelth.[/i] The dragon had an extremely odd way of trying to comfort his Rider, but Syrene recognized it all the same, and let out a silent sigh. He was right, death was just something everyone had to deal with, especially as a Dragonrider. X’rx was special, though. She had actually been fond of the man, and might have even considered asking him to have his baby at one point…
A hand raised to blot at an eye without smudging the light kohl. “Curse you, X’rx.”
