Name: E’rius (air-ee-us)
-->Eleutherius
Age: 36
Birth date: September 6th, 2987
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Straight
Rank: Bronzerider
Physical Appearance:
The man is built like an old brick shit-house. Literal walls of muscle make him one of the strongest people in the Weyr, and with a height of 6’5 and a weight of nearly 230 pounds, it’s no wonder intimidation comes as an easy asset. Although the majority of dragonriders are fit and lean with muscle, E’rius has gone well above and beyond the status quo; surely an impressive sight to all, especially the ladies. However, the Bronzerider has no predominant desire to be ogled at, and instead has become buff to earn immediate respect from others. His skin is more tanned than one would think it would be, considering his place of origin is the north. Turns of being outdoors most of the time has given him a bronzed, glowing radiance that speaks of his good health.
Freedom is one of his top priorities in life. Often times E’rius will refuse to wear a shirt for this very reason; he finds clothing to be restricting of movement and airflow. The less articles of clothing he has to wear, the better. When alone in his weyr or with a mate, he will roam naked. Of course, this distaste for uniforms go hand in hand with his horrible fashion sense and design incapabilities. He ain’t no artist and he certainly doesn’t pretend to be one.
While the Bronzerider is good at manipulating the dark hazel windows to his soul, they are still one of his most stunning assets up close. Dark brown circles outline flecks of green and gold that only seem to appear when sunlight hits them at just the right angle. Indeed, a person lucky to get that close to him is in for a treat; his eyes are normally warm and swirling with complexity. One would be unable to trace the thoughts hidden behind these hazel mixtures, but it is always a captivating activity to attempt, nonetheless.
The turns have started to show on his facial features and in both hair and scruff, which are naturally very dark brown in colour. There are sparse grays throughout his facial hair and sometimes the occasional silvery strand can be spotted atop his head when reflecting light. His hair is a mass of wavy locks that fall haphazardly every which way; with his lack of care for his appearance, sometimes it is apparent that he hasn’t brushed it in a while. The only wrinkles that have really started to emerge are laugh lines adjacent to his eyes, although they have not yet began to detract from his odd version of burly handsomeness. A long nose, lips and heavily lidded eyes sit proportionally on his face, with straight eyebrows hanging just above his eyes, giving him a constant look of contemplation. A strong, square jaw adds very much to his masculinity, and is attached to a thick neck.
E’rius’s voice is deep and soothing during normal conversation, but he can bark viciously if provoked, booming with the ferocity of rolling thunder. Don’t ask him to sing, though - he’s so tone deaf that he’ll butcher even the simplest of lullabies. In terms of dancing, E’rius has a certain grace in formality, but doesn’t have the coordination or passion for more of a contemporary style. He is capable of doing slower ballroom dances like the waltz.
The Bronzerider is extremely powerful in terms of strength and is quite handsome without having to try too hard. However, if he actually cropped his hair, shaved, cleaned off all the dirt and sweat, and put on some nice clothes, he would be extremely appealing to most and would even take a decade off his age. But he simply doesn’t care for that.
Personality:
E’rius is well-rounded. No side of his personality is particularly lacking, while no other side is in excess. Although he is usually warm and rather pleasant company in conversation, he is reserved and tends to withhold things about himself. He knows how to carry himself socially and doesn’t have to think too hard about how to direct a dialogue, but he can come off as slightly guarded and in fact a little unreactive. Something of a gentle giant, he can be a bit on the nice side when interacting with people that doesn’t feel threatened by. He shows interest in getting to know people over time, but hardly ever within the first conversation. He is quite happy off on his own, especially with the mental company of Amarath (despite the dragon’s irritating personality). Judgement was never something E’rius is fond of, so he attempts to treat everyone the same. When another male of his stature and body type is around, however, E’rius will go on the alert, and will feel slightly threatened, as if they are invading his territory. Still, he won’t show it, and will attempt to continue a normal interaction unless he becomes aware of the existence of an aggressive personality.
It would be a lie to say that E’rius is completely distrusting, but trust is something he often finds hard to reward. It takes turns for him to have complete faith in someone, to consider them such a close friend that he would lie his life down for them. His Bronze is probably the only other being that will ever actually fulfill that role. E’rius can be a hero when his own life is not put in danger; he is smart about getting involved in business that isn’t his. With the knowledge that only the odd exceptional people the Weyr are as intimidating as him, he will often side to help a victim, using his physical appearance to forcefully end a conflict. He will never start a confrontation with anyone unless he finds it completely justified, especially a physical one. And if a conflict does arise, he does everything he can with his arsenal of conversational techniques to stop it, and attempts to put the other person in their place by the shortest means available - usually by simply leaving the scene - or if it is a more violent confrontation, by knocking their lights out.
E’rius is ‘calm, collected, and controlled’ personified. His capacity for storing thoughts and emotions is colossal (which is why his eyes are always swirling but never seem to give anything away), allowing him to always maintain a peaceful and smooth aura. Often times he comes across as enigmatic and that is rather something attuned to his persona; an air of thoughtfulness and something of a slightly inverted flavour surrounds him. Indeed, it is next to impossible for the Bronzerider to lose his cool, but when it happens, there will surely be a bloodbath. When he is enraged to the point of bloodthirst (perhaps in a situation where someone dear to him has been slaughtered and he is about to seek his revenge on the murderer), it seems that all of the extreme emotions that he never expresses emerge and become melded into a sharp dagger of focus that forces his mind on a single track. He will gladly tear the enemy apart with his bare hands, literally break them in half - anything as equally painful as it is fatal. And with his extreme physical strength, it is best not to put this very hidden personality trait to the test.
E’rius does not nearly have the flirting capability of his dragon, but it is not difficult for him to attract a woman to mate with. He has had no extreme desire to have a serious relationship, but he also has not met anyone worth starting one with, either. He resorts mostly to satisfying his needs in a rather polite “wham-bam-thank-you-ma’am” manner if he is not completely taken care of by the activities of flightlust.
Although the Bronzerider mainly prefers to not meddle in other peoples’ business, he has a leadership quality that tends to pop up when he believes that he can help someone through a tough time. His extremely calm and powerful facade allows people to easily trust in him to make appropriate decisions, and he almost always makes level-headed choices. E’rius never actively seeks to give advice, but he will occasionally give very beneficial guidance when asked.
Amarath (#D74F45)
Colour: Bronze
Age: 19 (impressed to 17-turn-old E’rius)
Personality:
It’s a wonder that E’rius can put up with a dragon that has Amarath’s personality. The dragon is completely self-absorbed and 99% of the time carries a holier-than-thou attitude. He’s also something of a diva; being obsessed with how beautiful his hide is, he constantly demands to be bathed, oiled, and rubbed. Amarath is obsessed with shiny things - since he considers himself a shiny thing, and reflective things - since he can see how shiny he is in them. Indeed, he usually demands to be surrounded by polished surfaces, and can normally be found sunning himself on rocks overlooking still, mirror-like water.
Amarath and E’rius have a few common personality traits. The dragon, like the rider, is normally very calm and good at hiding things from others, making him somewhat enigmatic. However, this cloud of mystery can dissipate easier than E’rius’s when he is provoked. If he is angered enough, the dragon will vigorously spew insults and swearwords in the strange likeness of a furious salamandyr. It is rare for the Bronze to actually get to the point of irritation where he will become violent. Due to his very large size, bulk, and complete lack of morals towards others, violence is something another would want to avoid provoking. When in an argument, he will eventually become cold and nasty, and might even snarl viciously if on the brink of an attack. During flights, he will become instantly violent, and will not think twice in hurting another dragon if he believes his chances are better off doing so. And if another dragon attacks him, he will easily fend it off with his colossal size.
Haughtiness and ostentatiousness tend to chase other dragons away from interacting with him for any long period of time. Amarath will look down his muzzle at all humans without exception, and all males are treated with distaste and disinterest. He can become extremely territorial if a male tries to invade his space and makes a scene. Other Bronzes seem to attract a teensy bit more of his attention, simply because they are shiny; he certainly thinks of himself above them despite being within the same colour class. Browns and Blues are treated as if they either are his slaves or do not exist. However, females are a different story. Even Greens have the capability to capture his full and undivided attention, although he pays much more attention to shinier Greens that have some sort of gold decorations on their hides. Gold dragons are what catch his attention the most, and he will do everything in his power to interact with one. He will frequently participate in Green and Gold flights, but will generally not make any permanent relationships with Greens. He is almost always flirty around females, no exceptions. Any other species - be it firelizard, salamandyr, or canine - is treated with utter dismissal.
He considers E’rius to be a prized possession. While he knows the Bronzerider can easily take care of himself, he will occasionally interfere in his rider’s life if he believes that he needs to be protected. The only thing that can get an immediate bloodthirsty reaction out of Amarath other than during modes of flightlust is his rider’s safety. If it is called into question, he will become a ruthless immoral machine until his possession is safe again. After all, if E’rius wasn’t around, who would take care of his high-maintenance hide?
Appearance:
More red-hued than most Bronzes, Amarath looks quite like a huge hunk of shiny, polished clay. The way this Bronze sparkles is quite interesting; spots of reflective light seem to be small, flat polygonal shapes that light up at once, giving him the appearance of a quartz-riddled piece of terra cotta. The parts of his hide that are not riddled with quartz-like reflective areas shimmer in the likeness of metal. He could easily blend into the background if he laid still against the ground or the side of the mountain, his hide acting as a very effective way to camouflage. Indeed, when he frequently suns himself by the water, he looks as though his is a very shiny rock. In flight, the Bronze looks very much like a huge chunk of crystallized, shimmering earth in the sky. He is an extremely beautiful and unique dragon, and his knowledge of this is fuel for his behemoth of an ego.
Fully extended, this Bronze reaches a huge length of 40 feet, making him two feet above average for Bronze size. Of course, this makes sense; naturally one would have to be large in order to carry around the very heavy object that is E’rius. His wings are proportionally large to match and without flaw to allow for easy flight. His extremities are rather sharp in appearance. Whether that be his headknobs, his black claws, the tips of his tail, or his spinal ridges, they are all dangerous looking. The Bronze is also heavily muscled, like his Rider. Amarath is an excellent flier despite his own bulkiness, and has incredible amounts of power and stamina. What he is completely lacking, however, is agility, putting him among the lower ranks of the Bronzes in that category. This can hinder his ability to win Goldflights, but that certainly doesn’t stop him from participating in them. Besides, his impressive size, appearance, and (what he thinks is) his amazing ability to woo females would easily help to swing things in his favour.
The Bronze almost always has some sort of amaranthine eye colour, brought on by either his flirtiness, his haughtiness, or both. The brightness of the purple colour, however, simply depends on the situation. When Amarath has absolutely no respect for whoever is in his company, or if he is being purposely inverted and mysterious, a whiter hue adds to the purple. However, when he is presented with a female, this purple fully emerges at full vividness. Other colours rarely show in his eyes, for he dislikes showing the extremes of his emotions.
Another interesting aspect to Amarath’s anatomy is his headknobs. Two major horns shoot from his cranium away from his face, curving upwards as they end in transmitting bulbs. To the side of each of these is one more on either side that mimic the curves of the first set, giving a grand total of four knobs. Although they are nearly half the size of the primary two headknobs, they actually function to increase Amarath’s transmitting and receiving range by an extra football field or two. Although this distance is not very much to a dragon, their secondary function is to amplify Amarath’s transmitting messages to be ridiculously loud. This is a very unfortunate thing for all those he decides to direct his orders to, but a very fortunate thing for him as he knows his demands will never go unheard.
History:
Eleutherius was born to Leuther and Eius of Benden Hold in 2987 during the Long Interval. Leuther was a man with the same body type and strength as what his first son - Eleutherius - would grow up to have. He was a well-established Crafter, expertly trained and a respected luminary of his field in blacksmithing. Despite the depression in Benden’s economy, Leuther was still able to make a profit. As his crafted products were in relatively high demand, he became wealthy compared to the rest of the poverty-stricken north, allowing him to support a large family with semblance of luxury.
Eius, Leuther’s wife, bore Leuther a second son by the name of Thius in 2988, just a turn after Eleutherius’s birth. When Eleutherius was five turns old and Thius was four, his mother gave birth in 2992 to the boys’ younger sister, Eiule. Other than his mother having given birth to two siblings, the turns passed by rather uneventfully. Leuther continued to work tirelessly, keeping his family afloat financially. The blacksmith would often call Eleutherius in to help him with his work once the boy was mature enough to understand the basics of ‘don’t touch that’ and ‘go fetch me more of this’.
At the young age of 9, tensions that the boy had been quite sheltered from between Fort and Benden broke, and the Dragon Wars began. This newfound stress within the city leaked into Leuther’s crafting workshop in the form of what was commissioned to him. Requests for armour plates of all sizes, weapons, and war-like accessories for Dragonriders began to flood into his workplace. Leuther put in as much of his crafting genius as always, despite the output change.
Being a man with conservative morals, Leuther wanted his eldest son to take over his trade when he was old enough. The rise of the Dragon Wars made him fearful that his plans would be wrecked; he was aware that Benden Weyr would be needing more Dragonriders to fill their flanks, and they would be looking to pull anyone in to Stand as Candidates. Eleutherius would be approaching that minimum requirement age within the next few turns, and Leuther would be crushed to have his fundamental dream trashed. Eleutherius was growing up to be a very strong lad, despite his muscles not having bulked up very much yet. He was cut out to be a blacksmith just like his father, despite his very apparent lack of creativity. But the business would survive without creativity, and the boy would be very fit for the job, Leuther was certain.
Two turns later saw the birth of Benden’s junior queen, Gold Baith. Eleutherius was 11 at the time, and Leuther was all the more concerned that the Gold would clutch at the very moment he became 12. The feeling of his being Searched grew all the more certain, but there was nothing the blacksmith could do about it except continue to train his son in the craft. Thius, Eleutherius’s one-turn-younger brother, was jealous of all the attention his older brother was getting, and was attempting to win his father’s affection over for the position of future blacksmith.
Thius and Eleutherius did not get along so well as they grew up. Thius was vindictive and jealous
whereas his brother was the epitome of calm. The younger brother always felt threatened by the older brother even though he had never done anything to him, and that is why Thius was pleased when Eleutherius was Searched to be a Candidate in 2998. However, the 12-turn-old did not Impress, and he returned home to continue his training as a Crafter blacksmith. Eius bore Eleutherius a final sibling 11 turns after his very own birth, a male by the name of Leius.
To Thius’s joy and Leuther’s dismay, 17-turn-old Eleutherius was asked again to Stand in 3004. Gold Rimeath’s clutch, sired by Bronze Salenth, was mutated because of the drugs given to her, and many of the dragons that hatched from the eggs were culled in front of the teenager’s very eyes. Eleutherius nearly fell apart mentally on the sands after having witnessed murder after murder as the hatchlings emerged from their shells, one by one. His mind was pieced back together, however, by Amarath’s Impression. Amarath himself was something of a mutant with his dual sets of headknobs, but his differences were far less obvious than some of his other mutated hatchling brothers and sisters. Besides, his mutation was actually beneficial; although the Bronze was born into a moment of fearing for his life, he was passed off as acceptable. Leuther was forced to replace E’rius with Thius as the successor to his business, and quickly began to train him in Crafting.
E’rius and Amarath went through Weyrlinghood training under the intense pressure that the Bendenites were exerting on them. Their entire half of the north was relying on Riders such as themselves to fight the enemy and protect them from harm; every failure had a staggering effect. The Bronzepair learned quickly to do things right and with efficiency, picking up flying and betweening techniques as if it was first nature.
The fleeing of Kaegan and Gold Millieth in 3009 was met with annoyance but understanding on E’rius’s end. Every failure was amplified when in war, and losing a Gold was a big hit he wasn’t sure Benden could take. It also unnecessarily involved Selenitas Weyr, the Weyr the Goldpair had fled to. Benden was already in deep enough that adding a third guest to the party would most certainly do them in. He could understand her decision though, having heard about Rimeath’s gruesome death. Benden was never paradise, but it was becoming increasingly devastating to live in, especially under the reins of C’leon of Bronze Morsrath. E’rius did not want to see the collapse of Benden mostly because his family still resided there, and he felt the obligation to protect them.
E’rius was more than content when C’leon met his death in 3012. J’lorin seemed to cut back on the bloodthirst C’leon had left behind, and was even more pleased with the turn of events when the new Weyrleader formed positive ties with Selenitas Weyr. Making a friend was definitely better than having to fight two foes at once, and E’rius nearly had time to breathe a sigh of relief before the situation turned for the worse again. Ja’kin did not order Benden Riders to help those on loan in Selenitas, and the Bronzerider became frustrated in knowing his comrades were in trouble and that he couldn’t do anything about it. Not only that, but some of Benden’s Riders fled and became a rogue unit called Wasteland, leaving the Weyr even more defenseless against the increasing Fortian attacks.
The turn 3016 saw another gruesome, drug-induced death, this time of Gold Lyartenth. Both Rimeath’s and Lyartenth’s deaths frightened E’rius, for his dragon had been clutched of Rimeath. He hoped that Amarath would not befall the same sickness, having been born of the mutagenic Gold. Fortunately, Amarath seemed to be perfectly healthy, and no further drug-induced casualties seemed to occur.
Luck finally seemed to want to side with Benden as an earthquake struck Selenitas in 3017, just as the souther Weyr was starting to give them problems under the rein of the Wastelanders. Not much was done to find the southerners’ newfound home, however, as every Rider was busy defending against Fort. E’rius did not have a spare second to think about Selenitas; and what did it matter, really, now that they were out of their hair?
Selenitas Riders assisted Benden against Fort beginning in 3018 under a new friendship pact initated by two on-loan Bendenites, giving E’rius and Amarath, as well as all other Benden-raised Riders, a chance to breathe for the first time since being Searched. The beginning of the merger was tense, but as Fort became clear in the target of their minds, they easily became one fighting unit. The fight escalated to the Dragon War in 3019. The Bronzepair came out of the battle relatively unscathed; small nicks and wounds were unavoidable, but Amarath did everything he could to keep his hide as beautiful and scar-free as possible. After their victory, E’rius and Amarath helped to pick off the last few fleeing Fortians.
The permanent merging of Selenitas with Benden into New Selenitas Weyr and Inverness Weyr meant that Benden Weyr was no more. Despite having lived between the Hold and the Weyr all of his life, E’rius was ready to move on and into a new stage of life that he prayed would actually allow Amarath and himself some seriously deserved peace. Moving to Inverness Weyr, the Bronzepair continued with their duties, spending the next couple turns attempting to adjust to the new environment and extremely slowed pace.
