Erno is a very slightly taller and slimmer version of his older sister. At his full height now, he's just a touch over 5'7, with a somewhat gawky build that came from a recent small growth spurt. Given his family's general thickness, if he ever starts building muscle it is likely that he will bulk up quickly if he isn't careful, but for now he spends most of his time behind a desk or wandering his hold, so he's stayed slim. He's always favored his mother in build, though, and Merya was always a frail thing, so perhaps he will never be as muscular as his sister and older brothers. That remains to be seen.
His somewhat feminine face with pointed chin and cheeks made up of pure baby-fat is almost identical to Merridan's at sixteen, too. Of course, years of dragonriding have changed her face somewhat, but still, the resemblance is clear. His haircut is similar to hers, too, totally by accident, shorter on the sides and longer on top so he can part it to one side, letting long bangs brush over his forehead. If you dressed the pair of them the same and asked someone to pick out the boy and the girl, most would be hard-pressed to do so. Erno is not the most masculine of men by any stretch of the imagination, just as Merridan is not the most feminine of women.
It is in coloring that the siblings differ, though. Although his skin is the same creamy shade as Merridan's, Erno's hair is more of a wet-sand color, a medium brown that is precisely the same shade as his deceased mother's. His bue-grey eyes echo hers, too, more than the dark brown most of the rest of his family got. Erno loves his eyes, and often dresses in shades that bring them out: blues or greys, blacks, purples. He tends to be a somewhat flashy dresser, although his clothes are always practical; you never know when you might need to dig in the dirt or roll a cask to the dining hall.
P E R S O N A L I T Y
Erno is a friendly and above all sweet young man. At first glance, he's calm and sensible, but manages to do just about everything with a sort of brightness and positivity that is pretty much infectious. He's happy to go out of his way to make friends, and has a way with people and animals of all ages that immediately puts them at ease. Always ready with a gentle joke or a kind word, he's endlessly pleasant to be around, frustratingly so to those who might wish to provoke him. Erno has inherited the steadiness that most of his family has, and his fuse is a mile long. He can also be a bit of a flirt, although if you told him to go flirt with someone he would have no idea how to start; unfortunately, he's an equal opportunity flirter, and more than one girl has found herself with a useless crush on Erno.
That's not all there is to the boy, though. On the surface he seems like your run of the mill nice guy, the sort that would be eaten alive in the North, but Erno is more complicated than that. He mother's early death affected him deeply, influencing both his enjoyment of life and his lack of tolerance for anyone disrespecting women. That's the one and only way to get a rise out of Erno - disrespect him all you want, he'll smile it off or try to convince you otherwise, but disrespect a woman in his presence and he'll snap. Even more of a surprise is that he's not as light and fluffy as he seems; he learned to fight from a master swordsman, and wrestled and fought with his siblings for years. When words fail him, Erno isn't afraid to throw a punch or two.
That said, that's the one exception. Erno is much happier to work things out without fighting... or let the drama continue, as long as no one is in danger of being hurt, physically or mentally. He's not a great liar or manipulator, nor is he especially shrewd, but he absolutely delights in watching people find love, and is happy to help that along in whatever way he can. If a friend of his has a crush on someone, he is absolutely shameless in doing everything he can to make it work out, from 'accidental' introductions to makeovers to full-on romantic dates. And, when things go sour (as they so often do), Erno is there with a shoulder to cry on.
It has always been fairly obvious that Erno is gay, although he himself hasn't actually been in any relationships with males or females. He gets somewhat shy around people he likes, which manifests in over-cheeryness, which usually makes people think he hates them and is just trying to be nice. This, of course makes him more shy, which makes him more stiffly cheery... infinite series. It doesn't help that the only men he hangs out with tend to be exactly like his brothers, either; manly men, smiths and swordsmen and stablehands that wouldn't ever look at him as anything but a little brother. The only time he finds himself comfortable enough to make any overtures is when he's gardening, or surrounded by growing things - he inherited his mother's love of plants, and he has a wonderful green thumb. His room will always be filled with leafy green things, and it is in the presence of plants that Erno is at his best and most confident.

The fifth and final child of Danoh and Merya of Hyphen Hold, Erno was and is the baby of the family. As if to make up for his mother's premature death just months after he was born, Erno was doted on by his father and older brothers (and older sister, Merridan). Erno took to the role happily, growing into a sweet and good-natured child, despite the early separation from his mother.
His relationship with his family has always been good; Danoh was always kind to him, if hard, and Erno was an enthusiastic learner even though he didn't show as much promise in smithing or swordplay as some of his other siblings did. Danmer, the oldest, and Meroh, the second-oldest, were distant influences to Erno, the sort of mythic figures a youngest brother looks up to and wants to be. It was Rohm and Merridan, his siblings closest in age, that he spent the most time with. Despite his generally pacifistic attitude, Erno was happy to stick-fight and wrestle right alongside Rohm and Merridan, which is where he learned to fight, and he's actually not that bad at it. As much as he'd rather garden, he can hold his own with a knife.
It wasn't until Erno met Haeli that he really started to blossom, though. Trailing after Merridan when the older hold lady dragged her off to learn lady-things for the first time, Erno discovered a world he'd much rather have than the world of smithing and fighting that the rest of his family so enjoyed. Being nearly four turns younger than Merridan and too young to know that boys weren't supposed to learn these sorts of things, Haeli tolerated the little boy shadowing their lessons, although Erno was careful to keep the fact from the rest of his siblings, and swore Merridan to secrecy. Haeli was harsh with Erno too, but the little boy was a quicker study than his willful sister, and the woman quickly replaced Erno's mother he'd lost. Once Merridan was searched, Haeli and Erno's relationship grew even stronger, and the boy started spending at least half of his free time with Haeli and the other girls she taught.
Eventually, Danoh found out, but the Master Smith was accepting (if gruff and somewhat bemused). As long as his son was making himself useful, he was free to do what he wanted, and it looked like Erno was on a fast track to be a Steward of Hyphen Hold someday, or perhaps a merchant. Not a bad appointment, all agreed. As long as he finished his chores, Erno was given freedom to spend his remaining time with Haeli and the girls. All was going well.
In the four years since his big sister was Searched, little has changed. Erno and his family generally ignored the trials of Selenitas, as long as they did not affect trade. The boy was worried for his sister when he heard she had disappeared with the exiles from the Wasteland takeover, but he had endless faith in Merridan... regardless, he was happy to hear reports of a female rider that matched Merridan's description when a tithe theft was attacked, even if the loss of the tithes meant more work for Erno, who was now assisting the hold's head steward. He and his family also managed to connect with Erno's brownriding sister at the Hypen gather, something that made Erno incredibly happy (and much more comfortable with the idea of his sister as a rebel and an exile).
Life went on normally until Erno assisted his father with a delivery to Blossom. The set-up was almost ironically similar to Merridan's; Danmer had a meeting with a Master Smith he couldn't put of, Meroh was busy with another new baby, and Rohm was off working as a trade caravan guard, so it fell to Danoh's youngest son to help him with the delivery. The two were dropping off a load of weapons to be transferred on to the newly established Weyr combining the remnants of Selenitas and the Exile weyr of Burimyu, when a curious searchdragon looking for Candidates for Millieth's latest clutch caught them just as they were heading home. Erno was all ready to decline, but Danoh wouldn't let him. As iffy as Hypeners were around dragonriders, it was still an honor to be selected as a Candidate, at least in Danoh's eyes. So off Erno went, looking forward to finding his sister again, and maybe even impressing a Dragon.
He arrived in Selenitas Weyr with little fanfare and a lot of dreaming in his head. He befriended Buram, a spirited and very enjoyable lad, and another young man- now known only as T'vis. The three had stood for Millieth's Billiard clutch together, but, only T'vis managed to impress out of the three of them. After attending a number of smaller hatchings - firelizard and salamandyr alike - it seems the boy may never impress, as his luck has been nothing but poor this turn.
