It was kinda surreal.
Vikenti hadn’t been to a weyr in ages. The last time he’d been to one, it’d been Benden, and his mom had died. He thought that he’d pretty much gotten over that…for the most part. It took years for someone to convince him that he hadn’t actually killed his mother. He believed them…mostly. He sometimes still blamed himself. He had been her healer…she was right there in front of him, and he’d let her die. The thought was a stark reminder that maybe he wasn’t ready to be back here yet.
Back here? This wasn’t Benden. He reminded himself with a bitter twist of his lips. It was close enough though. Being back here was almost like being back there. He wasn’t privy to the business, usually. But you had to be pretty stupid not to have been aware of the massive reorganization of the weyrs. The dragonriders were a big enough presence on pern that even he’d been aware of the end of the war. He probably more so then from some of the other holds…since Fort weyr had been decimated in the war. There had been so many dead and dying, he’d had to distance himself from the whole thing. As a healer, not being able to save people, no matter to circumstances was difficult for hell, even for someone as perpetually grumpy as Vikenti.
Still. He hadn’t come to Inverness to sulk about his past. He tried not to think about it if he didn’t have to, but being back here made it hard not to think about it. Still, the fact that his father was here…somewhere mate it worse. He hadn’t seen the man anywhere…yet. Maybe Vikenti would have gotten lucky and his dad would have died in the war. Just…he didn’t get lucky a lot.
The man lingered where he stood, right eye twitching in his irritation. He still didn’t realize what he was going here. He’ d made the mistake of letting it slip to Elorein and Matteo that he had family here. Not that he’d ever actually met his cousin…or his Mother’s brother for that matter…not that he’d ever wanted to. His life was fine the way it was, thanks. He diddn’t need family screwing it over for him. In his experience, family screwed everything over. Unfortunately, that slip served to screw him over pretty well. His friends had suggested rather strongly that he go at least meet his cousin. Vikenti had resisted as long as possible. His ‘resisting’ consisted of bitching…loudly and at great length.
Unfuckingfortunately, he had to hang around the two people who were immune to his bitching and his stares.
Why was this his life?
Sighing heavily, Vikenti realized he didn’t have any way to find the man…not like he’d really intended on it anyway. He’d always figured that he’d derp around the weyr for a while before returning to the hold. His friends wouldn’t be any the wiser, honestly.

Ranchan was tired of flying. This wasn't unusually for her since most things were too much effort for the plump little fire lizard. She liked to explore and see people, but it was too much work to get their herself. She'd left G'tor's weyr in search of a nice quiet place to nap. It was far too noisy in their anymore with all the little ones. She'd almost decided to settle for a nap, when she spotted the perfect place. Why this man even looked like her beloved G'tor from a certain angle. He was perfect! With a chirp and a yawn, Ranchan draped herself over Vikenti's shoulders.

The healer was still busy staring holes in anyone not smart enough to not look away from him. He was leaning against one of the buildings, right eye twitching in irritation. The longer he stood there, the more pointless this whole thing seemed. As far as he could see it, he had a couple of choices. He could just return to the hold and tell Matteo that he'd seriously looked for this man but hadn't found him. There was no way the harper would fault him for that, because it wasn't like he could do anything about not finding him. The weyr was a big place - even if he hadn't actually looked for him...not like Matteo would know that he hadn't actually looked. He could also go to the infirmary. He'd always wondered what the weyr infirmary was like. No way it could be as good as his infirmary at home. He might just go in and poke around a bit, correct people's forms, berate some people...
...even if he didn't have any actual authority here. He was pretty sure he could act the part, and with his glares and barks to back that up, it seemed like a fun possibility.
He realized that this was probably a better way to spend his day than looking around for a guy he didn't know was even still alive and he stood, cracking his back and trying to catch someone's eye to ask directions to the infirmary. He'd made a reputation of being grumpy and unapproachable, but it was really damn annoying when no one would fucking look at him long enough to actually give him directions.
That's when something landed on his shoulders.
Vikenti froze, his entire body tensing. Sure, there were firelizards in Benden hold, but they were's all that common, and he didn't have to deal with the things on a daily basis. "What the fuck?" He griped irritatedly, twisting his head awkwardly to look at the firelizard...that was hurting his neck though. "What're you doing there?" He asked, like the thing could answer him. The healer blinked dumbly for a few seconds, hand lifting absently and fingers twitching as he thought about pulling the firelizard off of him...but he didn't.
Instead, he just stood there, select parts of his anatomy twitching like a crazy person, his eyebrows doing those weird things that really freaked people out and his hand in the air. "You don't belong there!" He almost wailed...but not quite because wailing isn't the most dignified thing in the world. "Go find your person...or something. That isn't me..."
This was just great. He couldn't go home now, not with someone's firelizard decided that he made a good bed...never mind the fact that he was perpetually prickly.

Ranchan opened an eye to look at Vikenti as he spoke. He might look like her G'tor from a distance, but up close he was certainly much crankier. She yawned again and stretched, giving the man a forlorn chirp. He didn't want her there? That was sad. He made such a good pillow too. Another green form appeared in the air above them. Tervain was not so cuddly as Ranchan and completely ignored Vikenti from the start as she addressed the other green. What was she doing here? The little ones cried when Ranchan left and she wasn't going to play with them. Tervain didn't lower herself to playing with such uncivilized offspring.
G'tor came out of one of the passages then, muttering to himself as he came. "And I thought raising a dragon, a salamandyr, and two fire lizards was hard," he was shaking his head and rubbing his temples. "I didn't think someone so small could cry so loud." Tervain trilled and landed on his shoulder causing him to glance up. "Oh Ranchan there you are! Dutoran's been looking all over the weyr for you! Isn't this a bit far for hide and seek? I'm sorry..." he stopped as he finally looked at the man Ranchan had claimed as her perch. He frowned in curiosity. Something was oddly familiar about this stranger. "Have we met?"

What the? Why did the firelizard have to sound so sad that he didn't want it there? It really wasn't fair in the least. Vikenti was obviously not its person, and did it just go around finding random people to sleep on. "That's not safe at all." He growled in the general direction of the firelizard, not that it would know what he was talking about since most of what he'd been saying was some internal monologue. "What if someone decided to hurt you?" He asked, eyes slightly wide. "Not everyone is as nice as me." That's funny. Nice and me in the same sentence without a "not" between them when describing the healer? People would laugh their asses off.
That was when another firelizard appeared in the air over him and he tilted his head back, staring at it with one eye twitching wildly. What the hell? Was he just a pet magnet or something? Why were they all coming? Why was this his life? He'd never wanted some smart mouthed harper to come save him more than right now, and he thought about just leaving. The firelizard would get the picture before too long and just disappear like those things tended to do. He was just not up to entertaining anyone at the moment, least of all someone's wayward pets.
He jerked visibly when he heard someone approach him. Vikenti glared at the stranger as he approached, a vein in his forehead bulging ominously. He realized then that the firelizards...at least the one on his shoulder and probably the one berating it in the air were probably his. "Do you just let your pets do whatever they want?" He blurted out irritably, eye twitching. "What if this one lands on the wrong person and gets hurt? I didn't have to be so nice to it!" He didn't realize that he was probably digging himself a hole. Then again, he rarely ever realized that he was doing that until he was in over his head.
The man's irritation calmed somewhat at the man's question. And yeah, now that he'd gotten a look at him, he did look familiar, not that that was something Vikenti would admit. "Probably not." the healer growled at length, absently straightening his shirt. "I live in Benden Hold. So, unless you vacation over there or something, I doubt it." Was this the man he'd been looking for? His long lost cousin?
It was likely, but he kinda just wanted to skirt around the subject so he could just go home and get drunk.
Whatever worked.

Ranchan was delighted to see G'tor and instantly flew over to claim a spot in his arms. G'tor caught her without really thinking about it and started to pat her absently. He was more interested in this newcomer before him. He shrugged off Vikenti's questions smiling. "Well, she doesn't normally land on strangers. She must like you. Thanks for not getting mad." True, he did sound cranky, but G'tor always liked to see the best in people, no matter how they acted.
He shook his head at the man's next words. "Afraid not," he admitted. "Life keep me plenty busy here. G'tor, by the way." He shifted Ranchan so he could hold out a hand to shake. "The nice fire lizard is Ranchan and the prissy one is Tervain." Tervain snorted, holding up her nose. She was not prissy. "First visit to the Weyr?" It wasn't so surprising, what with Inverness only being set up a few turns ago.
