Humans:
Name: Buram
Age: Fifteen turns
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Homosexual
Rank: Candidate/Healer
Physical Appearance:
The boy isn't an overly imposing figure. He stands at 5'5'', but he still has growing to do, so in all likelihood, he could grow more. Probably not much more since his mother was a very petite woman. He has all the makings of being the same. Well, petite for a boy. He will always be very lanky, even if he doesn't get much taller, but he probably will. He will have long legs and long arms with long, thin fingers. His face is round and he has a sharp, but small chin.
His eyes are large, but not too large for his face and are a dark brown color, which can almost seem black under certain lighting conditions. He has very dark brown hair that definitely looks black. One has to look very, very close to see the true color of his hair. He has prominent eyebrows that are a shade darker than his hair. They will never be overly bushy, though. Buram likes to keep his hair shorter, so it will never be long. His skin is tanned, but not too dark. It is reminiscent of the color of mocha. His skin is very soft and his hands are unblemished, signifying the lack of hard work he has done in his life.
In ways of dress, he likes to dress flamboyantly with bright colors. He's very aware of his physical appearance in all aspects of his life and despises getting dirty, so he will always be cleaned up very nice and proper. He wouldn't leave the barracks without looking his absolute best.
Personality: On first glance, Buram is probably seen as your typical nice guy. He’s friendly an amiable to everyone he meets, if not a bit detached. He’s an endlessly bright and optimistic boy, refusing to show any negative emotions on the surface. It takes a lot to upset him, as he’s pretty adapt at hiding the negative emotions inside. It’s pretty impossible to tell how he’s really feeling, because he always puts on a happy face, no matter what. He’s social and loves to talk to others. Being alone is something he tries to avoid at all costs, so the boy seeks to surround himself with friends and loved ones, each one he protects with a vicious fervor.
It isn’t impossible to get to him though, in fact, it’s quite easy. He just won’t give you the satisfaction of knowing you have got to him. The best way to upset him is to comment on his sexuality. Buram doesn’t hide the fact that he’s gay, he isn’t in the closet. He knows damn well that he’s gay and he’ll tell you to your face if you ask him. He just doesn’t flaunt it. No matter how flamboyant he can be, and he can be pretty flamboyant (preferring to wear brightly clothing and dressing sensibly), he doesn’t like people to point out his sexuality. This stems from all the teasing he had been subject to as a child, so, as a result, he holds it close to his chest. A private person, he prefers not to talk about himself to others. He’s much more comfortable sitting and listening to others about their own lives.
He’s young yet though, and it’s possible to pull him out of his shell, make him more comfortable about who he is and who he was born to be. In time, proven the right environment, when he knows what he wants, he’ll go for it without question. It’s just, at the moment, he’s a little too drawn in and private to admit to himself what he wants. He doesn’t approve of public displays of affection, at least on his part. This will likely change though, proven he finds the right person.
A hopeless romantic, he has no idea how to flirt. He’s prone to flirting without realizing it which is endlessly embarrassing for the boy. He isn’t comfortable enough with himself to let himself be happy in a relationship, so he tends, unconsciously, to keep people at a distance, so that they don’t get close enough to him for him to get hurt. He will stand up for himself, if put in a situation where it warrants it and he will stand up for the less fortunate, whether he knows them or not. He knows for a fact how bad it feels to be picked on, so he isn’t anxious to stand around while anyone else feels that way, but he isn’t particularly strong, or adapt at fighting. He just never learned, but he is good at using his words to fight with someone who deserves it.
History:
3002-3010
Amalia was sixteen. She was young and impulsive and very pretty, a very dangerous combination. The poor, clueless girl got involved with the husband of Ista’s Lord Holder’s sister. It was a stupid fling, and that was all it was. Amalia regretted it immensely, especially when their short term affair ended up with her with child. She didn’t know what to do. Her parents didn't know what to do with her. Unmarried and pregnant, there was little they could do. They decided to arrange marriage for the girl. She was pretty enough that any an would want her, even with a child. Am didn’t tell Tenbur that she was having his child. She was convinced that she could take care of the child on her own. So, she worked hard to make sure that she could provide for her baby. When Buram was born, she thought briefly about not including part of Tenbur’s name in her child’s, but she didn’t want her baby to grow up not knowing who his father was.
Eventually, probably due to the name, rumors started to spread. Am thought that she could hide the parentage of her son forever, but just in a few short months, thanks to the isolated nature of the hold, everyone knew who the THOUGHT Buram’s father was. And soon, Tenbur himself knew. Miraculously, he was able to keep the truth from his wife, Milanie and his young daughter. He confronted Amalia, and berated her for not telling him that she had been with child, his child. She fought back, telling him that he never should have slept with her if he hadn’t been prepared for the possible consequences. Eventually, the two settled their differences. Though he wanted to be in his son’s life, he knew that it would be better for both of them since Milanie and Tenlie could never know. After this, her mother found a suitable match for the girl. He was old, but he made a good living as an exporter of fruit and other goods. He treated Amalia herself well enough, even if he was a little dismissive. He was an overall cold man though, and was not opposed to beating her if he deemed it necessary. To Buran, he was ice cold. The child was not his, but he was his stepchild, so he tolerated the boy for a time.
They didn’t have much. With what was provided to her by her husband, Am barely had enough to support the pair of them, but she did have enough. As a result, Buram grew up happily enough, and he learned to never waste or take for granted the little one had. He never showed an interest in meeting his father as he was growing. This might have worried any other parent, but Amalia was eternally grateful for her son’s disinterest in the paternal side of his lineage. Eventually, maybe due to the lack of a male influence in his life (Her husband was hardly involved in Buram's life), be began to show a disinterest in anything male. He preferred to spend time around his mother ( what little time he could since she was always working), and when he couldn’t, he did things on his own, mostly things more girly than the average boy would do.
Amalia did begin to worry though, when her son didn’t show any interest in wanting to marry. In fact, he never showed any interest in the holds girls as a whole. Well, not romantically. He played with the girls a lot, tending to let them choose the games. He stayed away from the boys for the most part, because when Am did push him to play with boys, he got teased and bullied for being too girly. This was when he started to resent how he was growing up. It was when he started to show these feminine tendencies that his stepfather started to take notice and started to beat him with much more frequency than he did Am. The man thought it reprehensible that any boy would want to act like a girl. Disgusted and confused, he struck out, not only physically abusive, but verbally. Buram tried to stay away from his stepfather as much as he could, often going completely out of his way to avoid him. He grew bitter and angry that his father didn’t seem to care about him at all. Amalia always told him about her and his father’s arrangement, and he had always been content with that…but it was at this point that he started to resent Tenbur. If his father cared even the slightest, he would come see him.
3010-3012
It just so happened, that when Buram was eight, Tenbur did come. He wanted to visit his son and see how he was growing up. The meeting was awkward, and he left, upset with how Amalia was raising his son. It seemed she was raising a little daughter instead of a son. As a result, Buram started to rebel a little. He began to dress more gaudily, in the brightest colors he could manage with his attire still being decidedly male. Anyone could tell, even at that young age that there was something off about the boy.
Right after this, he saw how his mother’s hard life was affecting her. He knew he had to do something. He adored his mother, more than anything. She was and had always been his very best friend. So he decided to put his eccentric ways (mostly) behind him and take up a craft. The only craft that seemed readily accessible to the young man was glasscrafting. Though, as soon as he started, he knew it wasn’t for him. He hated it and burned himself often. Though he was always a very optimistic child, he knew this wasn’t something he could or wanted to do. Still, for his mother he persevered, but he was only getting worse, and they had no choice but to kick him out, which inspired more nasty behavior from his stepfather towards him.
He was at a loss for what to do with himself. There was no way he was going to spend MORE time around his stepfather. So he got into healing. The healer hall was all the way in Fort, but the healers as Ista took him in as an unofficial apprentice. His gentle nature was soon apparent, and it seemed, that where he had failed at glasscrafting, he would excel at healing. He soon learned everything they had to teach him at Ista. They saw potential in the young man and decided that he needed to go to Fort to apprentice at the Healer hall. Despite the prospect of staying around his abusive stepfather, he was loathe to leave his mother alone. She pushed him to go though, realizing how big of an opportunity this was for him and maybe hoping that being around more men would make him act more like a man, and partially to get him away from his horrible home life. She was desperate for him to escape her husband, even if she couldn't...she had it better anyway.
3012 - Present
When he was ten, he arrived in Fort. The boy was a quick learner, and he found a place where he would be accepted without question. He worked extremely hard as an apprentice, learning to block out all outside influences. As such, he didn't hear much of the growing tension between Fort, Selenitas, Benden and Burimyu weyrs. He was an excellent apprentice, always there when he was told, and he learned that healing was his calling. Unfortunately, Pern had different plans for the boy, when, as he was assisting one of the Journeymen at one of the southern holds, he was searched by a green dragon, trying to get enough candidates for Millieth’s clutch. They were also interested in him because of his healing abilities. He didn’t want to go, but since the Selenitas earthquake, he couldn’t very well just leave them to their fates. So, he went with the dragon to Burimyu, more to help people than to impress. When he arrived, he was right away thrust in the middle of Selenitas trying to integrate into their new weyr, and he himself was trying to integrate into an entirely new place while also being able to help people.
