It was easier, in K’lir’s opinion, to avoid uncomfortable topics than to talk about them. He really wasn’t good at conflict management, in any way, and never had been. While some people could sit and discuss things calmly, rationally, he couldn’t. If he felt strongly, he got emotional, and the more emotional he became, the harder he was to manage. All of that, K’lir knew well. And where Lennae’s health and happiness was concerned, he did feel strongly. He cared about her, and K’lir wasn’t too proud to admit that (or show it). Unfortunately, as a side effect, he was probably close to unbearable where she was concerned and he just knew he’d chase her away if he showed how stubborn he could really be (which was impressive; there was a reason he could keep Calistoth and Showoff both in line at the very same time after all). The idea of losing one of the few people he had left (which really came to two: R’wign and Lennae; he didn’t count Uu’n, as the blue rider’s fondness for him was based entirely on Daeluunya and Showoff… not him.) terrified K’lir immensely. He’d learn to hold his tongue if it saved him from spending his life entirely alone.
“People, no,” K’lir replied with an amused look toward Fuzz. Lennae’s movements with the duck had him snickering to himself, and it pushed some of the weariness he felt from his mind; it was exceedingly difficult not to be entertained by the fact that she was indulging the silly creature. “She usually just goes with shiny objects. Stealing Showoff’s stash is one of her favorite pastimes. It doesn’t even have to be gold or jewelry. She has quite the collection of shells. Sometimes she brings them to me, like gifts, and I smile, and act very flattered. Then she steals them back from me for her pile. It’s going to be a nuisance eventually, but for now, she’s not that bad. I think you’re the first person she’s tried to claim. She loves grabbing Showoff and putting him in the pile, and I once caught her tugging at Ciceroth’s tail, as if she could drag him off. I spent half a candle mark apologizing to Ka’rys, who looked very stern for most of it before he laughed at me and told me to go away. I don’t think I like him much.”
Oblivious to K’lir’s comments (and the fact that Lennae was playing along), Fuzz insistently pulled the green rider toward her pile. Her little wings flapped animatedly as she went and the duck was undeniably smug. A few small feathers came loose and fell into the furs around K’lir but she did not notice, for her attention was on her task. This was her biggest shiny yet, and she fully intended to claim it and sit on it so that the little shiny couldn’t steal it from her. Bigger really was better. Since she couldn’t claim the ginormous shiny, she’d settle for this one. Besides. This one was nicer. This one talked to her. That one just sort of laid there. Quacking her approval to herself, Fuzz tugged some more, her tail feathers shaking back and forth in her excitement. Very happy duck.
Smirking, K’lir rubbed the end of his nose. “She can’t talk, so I don’t think there are any worse habits he can teach her,” he explained, one hand coming up to rub Kahrelir’s back soothingly. “To be fair, she steals from him as much as anyone. He absolutely loathes her. It’s really funny. Calistoth, on the other hand, adores her. Sometimes I think they go out of their way to give me headaches, and it works. Listening to Lis and Showoff bicker is one of the worst experiences I endure throughout the day, and it’s always a daily occurrence.” Unfortunately, it was Calistoth who caused it, too. Showoff could usually be placated with compliments and gentle affection. He wasn’t really as much of a nuisance so long as he wasn’t ignored, and K’lir learned early the best way to punish him was by ignoring him. It worked magnificently, and Showoff would always suck up to get back in his good graces. Calistoth? She just threw tantrums until she got her way. She was more like a child than Kahrelir at times. “He’s being remarkably well-behaved right now, though. Showoff, I mean. I’m surprised by that.”
