Kayla's knees were drawn up to her chest, her feet resting on the edge. Chin rested about those knees, wide eyes looking straight ahead. If not for the rather upset look on her face, Kayla might look completely peaceful, even calm.
Kayla, love, we don't belong here. Listen to me, please... We belong where no one will ever hurt you again.[/i]
So smooth, so tempting was Fealyn's voice that Kayla almost felt like she could lean into the other, and feel her sitting right there, but even so, she knew that wasn't the case. Fealyn wasn't there beside her, but she was still a big part of her life. Her words were so tempting, yet Kayla knew the truth. She wouldn't survive a day if she left the Weyr, and nor would Fealyn. And then where would their parents be, hm? Wouldn't it be horrible to actually know that they'd destroyed the happiness of the people that had loved them, normal or not.
"We'd never make it Fea."
"Who are you talking to?" Another candidate had come into the common room, her eyes narrowed in suspicion, Kayla blinked, confusion filling her eyes. She didn't know this one, no, nothing about her was familiar. Not the short black hair, and not her stormy coloured eyes...
"Fealyn." Completely honest, Kayla blushed when the other girl glared for a moment, then laughed. It was a harsh sound, but completely false, she might imagine the other to have a rather nice laugh, when it wasn't completely fake.
"Really, I don't see anyone else here, so you're talking to yourself? Pathetic."
Beka would not admit that every word she spoke was making her feel sick to her stomach, even as she flinched back when the other girl approached, holding out her hand,
"I'm Kayla, I'm sorry, you can't understand me, but that's alright. Would you like to be friends?" She was so sweet, so... Innocent. Something Beka had never had the chance to be. Eyes narrowed as she stepped back, a part of her wishing Lura was here, she never felt so... False when Lura was with her...
"Why would I want to be friends with you?" Words were scathing and cruel, Beak slapping the other's hand away from her. Okay, now she really needed to leave, before she apologized.
There was a sudden feeling of anger, before everything was calm and quiet for Kayla, feeling safe and protected as Fealyn came forth to protect her.
"You're the pathetic one, how dare you strike Kay?" Fealyn's voice when she spoke made Beka's sound like the sweetest tone on Pern, it wasn't a fake menace, it was real. Fealyn really felt the anger, the hatred for this one in front of her coursing through her body. Pounding in her veins, filling her with adrenaline. A push was given to the girl's shoulders, and Fealyn's lips curled in a smirk as she stumbled. This sharding dimglow had hit Kayla, perhaps not what some might call a hit, but she'd lashed out at the one person Fealyn cared about, and there was no way she was going to stand around and let that happen.
Beka was, to be perfectly honest, shocked by the complete change in the girls demeanor. There was no happiness, no sweetness in her eyes now, it was like looking into ice. The ringing slap on her cheek startled her back into stepping back, pain flashed through that cheek and quite suddenly, Beka was very afraid. Not of Fealyn, for she seemed to fade into the background of the memory.
Move! Her brain shouted, screamed as the heavy footfalls came to-wards her, the large fists clenching before releasing that hold, yet Beka stood. She'd spoken, said something, what was it again? Did it matter? If she was right, her temper had gotten away, and she'd insulted him. Now she was about to get the thrashing of her young life. Fifteen turns old and she was already learning that the dark look on her father's face was something she was going to regret ever setting eyes upon. The sharp stone suddenly seemed like the most terrifying thing she'd ever seen. Yet, she was tied to the ground, her feet refused to move.
"You dare, you dare talk back to me?" She didn't answer, only stared, whimpering when his hand slapped her.
"Answer."
"I did talk back, so that tells you I dare to do so, or are you too stupid to know that?" Oh dear, biig mistake that was. Beka didn't even have time to wince before there was pain beyond anything she'd ever encountered. Broken bones? They were nothing compared to this. The stone had managed to slice her skin, and blood welled. A deep cut that would leave Beka with the scar she'd carry all her life, and which would make her flinchy about her collar bone and arm.
Fealyn was rather surprised when the girl crumpled to the ground, looking pale and scared. Crying out in pain just once, whimpering, when she did look up, one brow was raised. Fealyn didn't know what had gone on, only knew that she held no sympathy for the other girl. She'd hurt Kayla, and for that, Fealyn would want her to pay.
