Cailan was out in the vineyard picking grapes to make the delicious Blossom red wine and sighed as put down another heavy bucket of grapes. He spent most days just doing the same thing of picking grapes and sighed there had to be more to this then that. The idea of going to learn from the healing hall or something yet his parents would never let him go. It had been decided long ago that he would be like the rest in his family which meant picking grapes and getting married. A marriage that he didn't want because his fiancee had passed last year and didn't feel the need to have a repeat of that terrible experience.
The sweat was pouring down his forehead and he took out a handkerchief to wipe the sweat off of his forehead. It was a unusually warm day and sighed while looking around seeing his uncle. He went over taking a offered drink of water with a ladle from a bucket and then said, "It's a hot afternoon,". His uncle said, "I know Cailan just a few more buckets," then put a hand on his shoulder and motioned for him to keep going. "Okay, fine," said Cailan as he looked up at the sky wishing for something else out there and sighed. It would be a good year harvest and it would mean a good harvest later on. A quick look to his left caught sight of Ieiles a young woman who had a bronze fire lizard and sighed.
The lord holder and lady had given eggs from their gold queen fire lizard to the children of the hold yet Cailan had never been lucky to get one. He had wanted something special like that his entire life and sighed then went back to picking grapes. It seemed like nothing in his life would ever change and would be forever destined to pick grapes.

Were the world a more poetic place, it would have been a firelizard that landed on Cailan's shoulder, perhaps a lonely baby looking for someone to care for it. Of course, the world had already taken M'kai's flit, and his salamandyr... so instead, it was a fairly ordinary bird of prey that settled in, comfortable as if she'd known the Holdboy all her life. As sweet as Kami actually was, she looked downright dangerous to those who didn't know her - no doubt the bird would be a nasty surprise. Of course, she kind of ruined the effect by immediately burying her beak in the boy's hair, grooming him like she would her own chick.
Moments later, a gigantic shadow passed over the vineyard, followed shortly by a chubby sky-blue dragon. Futh plowed to earth (he'd never really gotten the hang of landing) just west of the grape vines, careful not to destroy any crops. As farmers all around straightened up and stared, a long haired, violently redheaded, knotless man slid down the dragon's side, offering the blue a pat on the arm before stalking off, clearly looking for something. He was a dragonrider, clearly enough, but why wasn't he wearing his Weyr's colors?
Still comfortably on Cailan's shoulder (if he had tried to brush her off, Kami had ignored him), the Razorclaw let out an earsplitting "Ka!" That got the rider's attention; he left off scanning the vineyards and jogged over, pulling on a leather glove as he came. Once he got close enough, he slowed down, whistling. The bird took off, soaring just a foot or two to land on M'kai's outstretched fist. "Have you got a rabbit in your pocket, or something?" the rider asked, clearly not expecting a serious answer. M'kai fed Kami a treat, then looked over the boy she'd chosen. "Where're you from, kid? Around here?"

Cailan had been picking grapes when a ravenclaw bird had landed on his shoulder and scared him to death. He said, "Get off," as he looked at the bird that started to ruffle with his hair. The boy was not pleased especially with the bird when he saw a shadow and then looked up to see a blue dragon land nearby. "Wow," said Cailan as he looked at the dragon then watched a man get off then come over to him. The bird made a weird noise then flow off taking a treat from the man and he asked Cailan a question. "Yes, I'm from Blossom Hold," said Cailan still looking at the man as if he'd grown two heads.
He had to just stare after all it was not everyday that a dragon showed up at Blossom Hold and he smiled at him. "I'm Cailan," said Cailan as he looked at the man then waited for him to say something as he was afraid to say anything else in front of a great dragon rider. Cailan had heard stories of course and had seen a few from afar which has never been up close to one. "Can I help you sir," asked Cailan as people started to gather around clearly impressed with the new addition to the vineyard? The dragon had to be lost because why would he be here it couldn't be because of search because no gold dragons we're rising at Serenitas Weyr. A real rider stood in front of him and he just continued to stare at him with mouth agape.

Kami peeped in a motherly way when Cailan tried to get rid of her, looking at him as if he were just the most adorable thing she'd ever seen. Luckily for the boy, M'kai strode up before Kami decided he needed feeding, effectively distracting her from her prey. She settled in her on owner's shoulder, still watching Cailan as M'kai looked the boy over.
"Blossom, eh?" M'kai asked, shaking his hair back off his shoulders. Maybe that would make the boy less... intimidated, or whatever? As long as the kid wasn't running away M'kai was happy, although he could handle a touch less confusion on Cailan's face. Maybe he'd never seen a rider before; likely enough. Offering a hand for him to shake, M'kai nodded, saying, "Cailan, good to meet you. I'm M'kai, of Blue Futh, and you can help me with something."
He paused there, though, glancing around at the people watching. "Just a second," he murmured to Cailan, taking a step around him. "If you all want to say hello to Futh, go ahead, he's gentle as a sheep. Just don't get dirt on him, please," he called, gesturing at the dragon. Whether the vineyard workers took his invitation or not, M'kai turned back to Cailan, looping an arm around the boy's shoulders and guiding him away from prying ears.
"I'm here on Search," he began, keeping his voice low. "Futh thinks you might be capable of Impressing, and we need Candidates for a clutch. The Queen has yet to rise, but she should be going up within the sevenday. Not Selenitas, but I can't tell you much more about that until we're on our way, and if anyone asks it might be easiest to say we are from Selenitas. What I can tell you is that if you do agree to come, you won't be able to visit or contact your family for oh, say, two turns? If you need time to talk it over with your family, go ahead." Pausing to scan the crowd again - they seemed to have gone unheard - he asked, "Interested?"

Cailan let himself be pulled away then said, "Yes, I'm interested and that is okay my family will understand just let me go talk to them,". He ran back to him uncle explaining the situation and hugged him with a wave was off. "We can go he'll tell my parents and I would love an adventure," said Cailan as he looked at the man and smiled. It was a little mysterious that he was just saying that they we're from Selentias yet apparently we're not. The situation didn't worry him because this man was a dragonrider and unable to lie. "I will come I would love to stand for a chance at a dragon," said Cailan as he looked at them.
The young man didn't have anything of value to take with him and wanted to get away from his family for a chance of an adventure. His normal life here just picking grapes from vineyard was taking a lot out of him and wanted a life where adventure was everyday. A friend that would always be there and would never be alone. He didn't care what color he got though just hoped for a dragon and looked around. His home was the past and somewhere in the future hopefully there was a dragon in it.

Good, he'd found a useful kid, it seemed. Waving Cailan off, M'kai stroked Kami while he waited for the hold boy - now Candidate - to return. And soon he did, with even better news. "Excellent," M'kai replied, moving quickly from idleness to efficiency. "We'll leave right now, then. You should get your chance to stand soon enough, might as well get on our way." Gesturing for Cailan to follow, M'kai strode towards his blue, raising an eyebrow just a little as the holders drew back at his approach. Thanks, Wastelanders. Bending down, he made a cup out of his hands, clearly for Cailan to use as a foothold. Futh wasn't the biggest dragon around, but he was a little chubby, and his wide, smooth sides weren't the easiest to climb if you weren't used to it.
Once Burimyu's newest Candidate was settled in, M'kai swung up in front of him, twisting around to show Cailan how to strap himself in. "Any last questions before we go?" The bluerider asked, still half-turned towards the Candidate. Futh backed his rider up, rumbling a gentle Welcome,[/i] at the boy on his back. The blue wasn't much of one for speaking to new people, but he didn't mind a greeting every now and again.

"No, I'm good," said Cailan as he took a final gulp of air and tried to breath. Cailan was trying to share that he wasn't scared yet was deeply trembling hard underneath. When he heard the dragon speak to him and said, "Your a beautiful blue," with a gentle pat. He was already admiring the beautiful blue dragon and trying to breath properly. A scared boy was leaving his life behind yet wanted something more.
His eyes did dart around for one last moment and knew that it would be a few years before returning. Cailan had hoped that his parents would be proud of him one day and bring some honor to his family. The young candidate just breathed in and out while secretly hoping he didn't fall off in the cold in between. A while back his mother would tell him stories of the cold in between to get him to behave it had worked.
