It was a quiet sort of morning. Tobby thought that it was surprising such a morning even could exist after the recent events. It seemed like quiet just shouldn't exist. There had been so much pain and death. The horrors still mocked him at night. And yet, from the moment he woke, the quiet had been everywhere. He missed noise. It was an odd thing to miss, but Tobby missed it none the less. The candidate barracks could never be filled with noise like the creche had been. Tobby had always thought he'd be grateful to sleep in a near silent place like he did now, but he wasn't. He found himself having difficulty getting to sleep in the quiet. The turns and turns of drifting off as he listened to everyone else in the creche make their familiar sounds of sleep had made him used to the noise.
So he figured it was as good a time as ever to make his near daily visit to his sister. He was glad that Caevie was too young to understand everything. Glad that she would understand the total concept of death with both her parents now gone. Tobby paused outside of the creche, listening to the familiar roar of children that spilled out. He was determined to hide any dark feelings from his innocent sibling. The candidate took a few deep breaths before he smiled, an easy feat as he pictured his sister, then stepped into the creche.
There were weyrbrats everywhere, just as usual. He had only recently left this place, so it was easy for him to fall into the pace of returning any waves in his direction. "Caeviiiiiiie," Tobby sang softly, glancing in every direction as he sought out his baby sister. "Oh, Caeviiiiiiiie."
