Imaskel had been awake all night. He was used to being up all night, but for good reasons, and that definitely hadn't been the case. He kept telling himself that it was just the new environment, but he'd been having vivid nightmares since he got to the Weyr. Last night had been particularly bad. He felt like he could still hear Ashen's voice singing, and see the boy's face as clearly as it had been when he was alive.
He had woken from that dream very early in the morning, and he had found it impossible to go back to sleep. I guess I really do have a guilty conscience, he thought sullenly. Scowling, he pulled on some clothes and went out to the common room.
Now he was huddled around a mug of klah, trying to get the images from the dream out of his head. He felt like he was reliving Ashen's last moments over and over. "You were never this pushy when you were alive," he muttered. Sighing, he leaned back against the cushioned chair, wondering if anyone else was awake this early. Talking to someone might cheer him up.

"Sharding salamandyrs!"
She had no idea who was in the room next to her, but they definately had a salamandyr, and a very loud fire lizard. She heard light snores. Apparently they were not affected at all by the awful noise. "Shut up, you obnoxious morons!" She hissed at the wall. As if to spite her, they grew louder. With a growl, she grabbed her cloak and slipped it over her body.
She left her room, and began humming to herself as she made her way to the common room. Karou would be able to get some sleep. Her hum grew to be one of her signature wordless songs. She entered the common rooms, and stopped singing. She thought she was alone for a moment beore noticing a slumped over figure in the corner. With no regards to politeness, she grabbed a seat next to him.
"Who are you and why are you awake?"

Imaskel cocked his head at the sound of singing. So someone else was awake at this hour. He grinned. Some company would be nice. Talking would take his mind off of things. His smile brightened further when a young woman walked into the room. Her features were a little sharp, but Imaskel thought she was pretty nonetheless. Of course, Imaskel thought most girls were pretty.
When she sat next to him, he opened his mouth to say hello, but she spoke before he could. Imaskel did a mental doublet take at her harsh words. Ooh, a feisty one!
His smile was replaced by his signature smirk. "Well excuse me," he drawled, crossing his arms. "I'm sorry if I offended you with my wakefulness. He set the klah down and straightened up from his hunched position. "My dirty conscious just wouldn't let me sleep." Even though the words were prettymuch true, his voice was dripping with sarcasm. "And my name is Imaskel. Now why are you up? I can't believe that such a pretty young lady would have the same problem as me."

"Pfft," she muttered rudely at his fake apology. "What dirty conscious? What are you talking about, crazy?" His sarcasm irked her beyond beleif. It was quite hypocritical, actually. She seemed to detest anyone who acted like her. "If you must know, I room next to the most pleasant salamandyrs who have the wonderful habit of screeching all night long. And if you call me pretty again, I swear on the first egg I'll punch you."
Though she didn't say it, she was flattered. Unfortunately, she didn't like compliments. Not one bit. His sarcastic attitude made her feel the exact opposite, in fact, making it more of an insult-compliment, or at least in her mind. She scowled at him. Her first Impression of him was, well, loathing. Then again, her first Impression of nearly everyone she met was loathing. All in all, she ended up not quite loathing all of Pern. Just most of it.
And what wasn't there to hate?
Just think about it. All the obnoxious people, all the annoying people, all the stupid people, they angered her. There were loud animals, crazy animals. Nearly everyone in Pern had some detestable trait. This boy had several. He seemed too similar to her. Her face relaxed though. She knew no one. Might as well try to play nice.
"So what, are you a candidate for that wher hatching?"
