Two teens walked silently down the hall of the candidate barracks. The elder was raven-haired and blue eyed while the younger had the same blue eyes but was blonde haired. Both were slender of build and fair skinned. In fact the younger one almost looked albino his skin was so pale. Their similiar features marked them as related but you might have mistaken them for cousins if you didn't know them.
"Connor why are we doing this?" the blonde teen asked giving the raven haired boy a cross look.
"So we can have food in our stomachs and a roof over our heads without worrying about getting killed, Yukiro." Connor replied running a hand through his hair. The younger teen sighed.
"Fine, but I don't know if I like this place." Yukiro grumbled. Connor shook his head.
"I don't much like our position either but if it keeps us alive I'll take a chance." he told his younger brother. Their footsteps echoed sharply down the seemingly empty hall.

It wasn't unusual to hear voices or footsteps in the candidate barracks and yet for Maya, who had been living here for the past couple of turns, new voices were easily recognizable. Two new voices were even more so. The Journeyman Dragonhealer slash candidate had been particularly anxious about the clutch on the sands. She had really been pondering how many turns she had left to stand for a dragon. She knew she was being paranoid and that she still had a few good turns left before she was considered too old to stand. Still the fact that every single person who had been in the barracks since her arrival had long since Impressed made her feel a little downtrodden. Distractions from her musings on this were always a welcome thing.
Her own footsteps were lighter than those of the two boys who were heading in the opposite direction from her and so headed towards her. She could see them in the light of the brightly lit glows. She could easily confirm even from this distance that she'd seen neither of them before. That meant they were new. New faces were a welcome sight. She never knew if the candidates that came into the barracks would be Weyrlings alongside her; or maybe if they would Impress and she would still be staying in the barracks. The pessimism was not her style and she wondered why it had begun to trouble her so much since Jingth had laid her clutch. She really needed a confidence boost. She had it pretty good here at Selenitas Weyr, dragon or no dragon.
She gradually drew nearer the pair and finally was in polite view and speaking range. She had nothing better to do and had been ambling back towards the barracks simply to gather up a couple of scrolls and bring them to one of her favorite spots out in the Weyr bowl. Really it couldn't hurt to stop and welcome the newcomers. Maybe they would even chat a while. The days were often long and boring and she had most of her social interaction while working in the Infirmary--not outside of that.
"Hello there," she greeted them with a polite smile and incline of her head, before asking, "are you two new candidates here?" A simple question. Simple was often best upon new meetings. No thought was required to answer a question like that. Very straightforward and simple questions were a good way to get people to converse. She noted they both had blue eyes and pale complexions. As a healer, even of dragons, she spent so much time noting details about people. Obvious details like this were noted without much preamble or thought. Were they related, then? Their hair colors were very different but genetics could have simply made that difference easily. The eyes and the complexion as well as some notable features were similar enough that they might have been cousins or brothers. She wondered which it was as she didn't think their similarities were mere coincidence.

Light footsteps approaching the two boys made them look up and temporarily forget their argument. The footsteps belonged to a girl who looked to be around their age. Her walk was confident enough that the boys guessed she had been here a while and knew her way around. Connor gave the girl a friendly smile.
"Hello, and yes me and my brother are new candidates. I'm guessing you've been here a while." he replied. The girl seemed nice. A welcome change from their adventures on the road here. "I'm Connor and this is Yukiro." Connor introduced himself and his younger brother.
"Nice to meet you." Yukiro said politely though he wasn't too happy to be here. Well maybe he could try to be a bit more flexible, if only for his brother's sake. And perhaps this girl could show them around a bit. They were still learning their way around and with a clutch on the sands they needed to learn their way around sooner rather than later.

It wasn't too often that she saw a sibling couple who were both candidates. She imagined that it must have been nice for them to have each other there. Yet another part of her realized that there was a chance one brother might Impress and the other be left standing. She wasn't sure anyone would enjoy being that one left standing while their sibling Impressed. Not only would it cause a rift in the relationship because a dragon would require all of the new Weyrling's time, but it couldn't possibly feel nice to the one left behind in the barracks--and she would know; only on a lesser level though.
"It's a pleasure to meet you both, Connor, Yukiro. I'm Maya. Also a candidate." And have been for two turns now, her mind said, feeling a touch bitter. It was hard when new candidates came in and Impressed on their first go when you were left standing several times. Still, she forced herself to simply not think about that. These two looked a little out of place. New locations could do that and she wondered if they even knew their way to the important places in the Weyr at all. It wasn't like she was doing anything...
"Have you unpacked yet? Seen any of the Weyr?" As a Journeywoman Dragonhealer who might someday be a Master, she wanted to still try and make a good impression on others. Even if she never Impressed she had decided to stay at her post here. She had been here for two turns or more. It was starting to feel like home. She inspected the pair in an subtle mannerism. They looked close enough to her age and yet sometimes it was hard to tell. At eighteen turns she looked like her age could range from sixteen to nineteen turns or so. Yet her behavior made some guess her to be even older still. There were plenty of candidates like this. With what was going on around Pern it was no wonder.
She noted that they both had blue eyes and yet one had black hair and one blond. Plus, the dark haired boy looked a little older. They were both fair in comparison to her, and yet the younger one was so pale she wondered if he might be unwell. Well, perhaps they were from the North. Many pale skinned individuals hailed from there. It would make sense that these two might have as well. Usually people around here were at least moderate of complexion. There were not many extremes. Even if her own skin coloration was always tanned due to genetics of her parents; it was unusual to see many people as fair as the younger one.

Connor rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly embarrasment flickering through his blue eyes. "We've gotten unpacked but we just go here yesterday. So we haven't had much of a chance to look around." he replied. And unfortunately Yukiro wasn't too happy about being here. Connor was still trying to convince his younger brother that this was a good idea for both of them. It gave both boys a roof over their heads and food as well as a place to sleep.
"But we would appreciate a guide." Yukiro said out of politeness. He was trying to be open about living in Selenitas but it was no secret that people from Benden were not trusted here. Personally he was just glad to not be traveling.
((Sorry its so short XO my muse is being a pain...))

They had just gotten here yesterday, had they? Well, that was good they'd had a chance to unpack and get settled in a bit. Still it was hard not knowing anyone as she figured they might not. Especially not if they needed someone to show them around the Weyr. If they had known anyone likely it would have been offered by that person already to do so. Her next question was one that was probably anticipated but given the boy's circumstances they might not have been happy to answer. Of course it would have likely been the first many asked.
"So where did you two come here from?"
Maya looked from one to the other curiously. They were nice enough looking lads and she had certainly never seen either of them before. She ran over in her mind briefly all the main places they would likely wish to be shown to, from the dining hall to the hatching sands. Of course they could not enter, but she could at least show them the entrance. They would in all likelihood be going there soon enough to touch Jingth's eggs, as was she. She was trying quite hard not to think about that, though. The more she thought about the upcoming hatching the more her stomach turned. It wasn't a nice feeling. Suddenly, a creature darted out from behind her hair and seemed to be searching the boy's faces for a moment before it spoke.
Who be you? You be Mayafriends? You be Mayafriends or I eat'chu![/color] The bronze 'mandyr hissed at the brother's in agitation. He had been sleeping and now he was not. They had better be answering him, and quickly, too! Maya frowned and plucked the creature from her shoulder, holding him up in front of her. He protested, frill coming half-way out before he went limp.
"Be nice, Zex. They're new here and you'd best not be trying to eat anyone," she chided him. He twisted around to glare at the boys again, tongue flickering out and in again. She deposited him back on her shoulder and he dug his claws in purposely, causing her to wince a little. Stubborn critter. He was her best friend but also a little pest at times. Especially when meeting new people. He was quite demanding and often tried to intimidate them by measure of his 'large frill' and 'mighty size'. He was undoubtedly big for a 'mandyr, and yet that wasn't really saying much. She looked apologetically at the boys and explained, "this is Zexion. He's a Salamandyr and he will not be eating anyone," she said with an amused smile. Obvious statement, that was. Zex hissed his protest and muttered something unintelligible in her mind. He was not pleased with her going against what he'd said, after all.

"We're from Benden." Connor replied a bit hesitantly. Yukiro shot his brother a look that asked, 'Why are you telling her /that/?' Well Connor figured it would be better if it was out in the open. Connor and Yukiro blinked in surprise at the appearance of a bronze 'mandyr. He didn't appear to be too happy with them being around his human. Connor smiled at the mandyr.
"Hey don't worry, we won't hurt her." he told the mandyr. Yukiro nodded.
"With you around she doesn't have to worry about that, Zexion." the blonde said amusement flashing in his eyes. Bronzes had big personalities whether they were dragon sized or not.
"How long have you had Zexion?" Connor asked Maya. It looked as if she'd had him a while. Zex looked full grown to Connor anyway.
