The target was a bale of straw. Eventually it would be taken over to a beast to be eaten. But not until it was utterly decimated by arrow after arrow. Which it pretty much was, at this point. It was something she'd been assigned, but had actually taken to. Isori found it quite exhilerating, her bow. She liked it a lot ... and with the determination she plied to everything else she had studied, she was working on getting very good at it.
She wore a sleeveless tunic, ensuring she had no random bits of cloth to foul her aim. It was belted above her waist, and from the belt hung her quiver, just behind her right hip. It was mostly empty due to all the arrows sticking out of her straw bale ... soon she'd have to walk down range and pick all her arrows back out of the bale. They seemed to spring from the strands at haphazard places, as if she was a particularly bad shot. But there was a method to the madness ... she didn't just aim for the middle of the bale and hope to hit it. Instead she picked places, aimed, and shot. Places that didn't already have an arrow, usually. Isori had figured out awhile back that clustering her arrows tended to tear the fletching off ... and she hated re-fletching arrows. Time consuming and tedious, it stole from her time that she could spend doing something else.
Her toes were bare, not out of any effort to devellop any kind of callous, but out of comfort. Normally she liked to wear shoes of some sort ... usually something that matched her outfit suitably. But of late she'd found shoes more and more to be confining and troublesome. For whatever reason they randomly didn't fit anymore. One day they'd be fine, the very next they'd be far too tight for comfort. Why, she couldn't figure. Today was one of those days, she so went without. Achey feet weren't any fun at all.
Aikelyth was sprawled out in a semi-circle behind her, watching in semi silence. Isori, as concetrated as she appeared to be, was not wholly concentrating on what she was doing. Instead her mind was on her recent conversation with M'kai. Isori felt she was thrumming with excited energy ... but there was a damper on the whole thing. She was still trying to figure out how to approach her master about it. She had to tell him ... preferably sooner rather than later. But how? She knew he wasn't going to be happy ... maybe even mad. Isori knew she'd busted a rather key rule for Weyrlings ... that didn't bother her too much. Breaking rules was something she did - albiet while usually masquerading around as Orena. But this one she was going to have to own up to and couldn't wiggle out of. Concequences were liable to be levied against her, and she had no idea what those concequences would be.
She could only hope that Sel'n wasn't going to force her through betweening lessons anyway. That was the last thing she wanted. Isori had certainly never looked to get pregnant. Never even dreamed of it. But it had happened ... at first she'd been terrified. Then she'd gotten terrified again, but for different reasons. Now that was all worked out, but even through it all ... she didn't want to give her baby up. It wasn't even born yet and she was attached to it. The prospect of it being born still scared her ... but yet she was excited for that day at the same time. The very last thing she wanted was to be forced into an activity that would gurantee an abortion.
So ... she found herself trying to debate how to approach Sel'n. How to kick this thing off to garner results that she wanted. How to manipulate the situation so it was minimally damaging. Given that she didn't know how he was going to react, it was a very difficult thing.
I could always take you and fly away. Aikelyth offered. We can come back in a few months after, when you are ready. It seemed a reasonable solution to her!
"I can't do that Aikelyth." Isori answered. "For one, where would we go?"
I don't know. You'll think of something. Aikelyth answered with confidence.
"I can't. I won't run away unless I absolutely have to. I am sure there are other options. I am positive." Besides that ... she not only had to feed Aikelyth, she had to feed herself ... and when the time came, she would need at least one Healer. Running away was not an option.

Ever since Vanity’s death Sel’n’s life had revolved around one thing and one thing only. His weyrlings. The man didn’t do much conversing or socializing anymore. (If he really ever had.) No his life revolved around these kids the their dragons. Them and Kaaoloth. You could call it obsessive. But that was the only way the rider found himself able to cope with the gaping hole left in his soul. If not for Kaaoloth, and the distance between him and Vanity (both physically and emotionally) for two turns, the man would have died. As it was even with that distance he had tried to crawl into that black void the mandyr had left. Kaaoloth had ripped him back, utterly refusing to let him go. At the time the dragon had been under the belief that having half of his bonded was better then no bonded at all. While Kaaoloth still stood by his decision, Sel’n’s recovery was a slow and painful thing to witness. But the older rider was getting better. One baby step at a time. The drinking was certainly worse but the brown put up with that because it was better then the man falling back into using fellis. Anything was better then that.
Sel’n was currently sprawled out on his dragon’s back jotting down some things on a piece of hide as his mind turned over what they would do at lessons the next day. He had given his weyrlings the rest of the afternoon off to do whatever it was they wanted. He was quite proud of them all except for T’ri. That one he still felt like he had personally failed. How could he bring the boy around? There had to be something he could do. Maybe he’d speak to Nephele about it. She lived with the boy’s brother currently after all. Hmm. Yes if could be said that Sel’n was a bit of a spy. He subtly dug into the lives of all his weyrlings. It helped when he had connections. M’ta, Nephele, and a few of his other older students would give him any info they knew when he asked for it. He had the sneaking suspicion that they were trying to help him the only way they knew how. Catering to an obsession that was better then his obsession with alcohol. His job.
At any rate it was that subtle digging that had first tipped him off that something was going on with Isori. Her physical performance on their runs and workouts was dropping dramatically, the clothes she insisted on wearing were ridiculous, and the Weyrlingmaster had a sneaking suspicion that he knew why. He just prayed he was wrong. Though, through discussion with Kaaoloth, he doubted he was. The weyrling’s green Aikelyth had always been a bit overly worried about her bonded. Even neurotic at times seemingly. It was all fitting together into some gruesome puzzle that he would rather not know the answer to. But the answer was coming and it was staring him in the face. Sel’n just had to decide what to do about it. How to go about it. There was no pussyfooting around the topic. If it was true the girl, and the other involved party or parties, would feel the full consequences of their actions. It was only right and it was his job, his duty. There was no room for emotional thought on the matter when what she had possibly done could have dire consequences for any weyrling after her. Especially if the brownrider was right.
With a grunt he shifted on Kaaoloth and rubbed the back of his neck, the brown lifting his head from the ground to look back at his bonded and nudge the man’s leg lightly. An overwhelming feeling of support and love coursed through the bond, the man smiling wearily as he stroked along his dragon’s muzzle. Besides those kids Kaaoloth was the only thing in his life that made it worth living anymore.
Would you like to speak to Aikelyth’s now? They are not far off. Her mental signature is strong. They are probably down in the training field. Sel’n snorted softly and shifted the scrolls he had been working on, laying them across his dragon’s back to let the ink dry before he bound them back up. “Sure. Might as well get it over with while it is all tangled in my head.” Indeed. Another light nuzzle was given his perched bonded before Kaaoloth craned his neck and reached out to lightly brush against his weyrling’s mind. Aikelyth my dear. If you and yours have a moment Sel’n and I would like to see you both? We are upon the gliding hill. No rush. Just whenever you are ready. Done with speaking to the green he turned back to his rider the man and dragon finding some small comfort in the look they shared. An embrace without touch or words.

She had been just about to let the next arrow fly when the sensation of speech behind her back caught her off guard. Dropping the bow and letting the tension off the string in one fell swoop, Isori half turned to look over her own shoulder at Aikelyth. Who ... was definitely talking to someone. Who, exactly, Isori couldn't tell. So she arched one eyebrow.
Most certainly! Mine is only practicing her archery again, we can be up their directly. Aikelyth answered, pushing to her feet with enthusiasm. She liked Kaaoloth, and by proxy, Sel'n. But definitely Kaaoloth. Sorimine, our teachers want to see us. I told them that we would be over directly. I am excited! I wonder if we are going to get to try out something new? She wondered excitedly as Isori slipped her arrow back into the quiver.
"Give me a moment then." Isori answered, trotting over to her target bale. It took her a moment to wiggle all the arrows back out of it and slip them safely into her quiver, but once she had that done, she trotted back to where Aikelyth was impatiently waiting. Slipping her bow over her head and one arm to rest crosswise of her chest, Isori bounced up onto Aikelyth's shoulders. Settling astride the green's neck, she took a hold of the ridge there. Mostly because she didn't have her harness along ... they'd walked out here and had intended to walk back. But she wasn't going to walk when Sel'n called... no risking irritating him when she could get there faster for sure.
Aikelyth bounced forward a pair of steps and then spread her wings as she leapt into the air. A few beats and she cruised just off the ground toward the gliding hill where Kaaoloth said he was waiting. When the Brown came in sight, Aikelyth warbled a greeting before backwinging into a gentle landing at the base of the hill. Isori slipped off and trotted up the hill toward the brownpair, Aikelyth following along right after.
"You called, Master Sel'n?" Isori asked, quite chipper. If there was anything Isori loved, it was learning. Lessons were always something she looked forward to, and if she could at all help it, she was usually on time. What he'd summoned her for was beyond her, but she was ready and willing to learn anything he had to offer.
Aikelyth crooned as she hurried the last few steps, wiggling and tucking her much smaller frame up under Kaaoloth's neck much like a happy puppy might for an older hound. Her tongue dashed out quickly toward the older brown's jaw, but she didn't actually lick him. We're here! she announced rather unnecessarily, but with plenty of enthusiasm. If no decor was so ever, as Isori did try to exercise.

Aikelyth says they come. Kaaoloth responded shortly nudging against his bonded’s hand when it rested once more on his muzzle. “Thank you Kaaoloth.” Giving a final stroke to the dragon’s muzzle the Weyrlingmaster quickly adjusted his shirt and then took a draw from the flask he kept strapped to his hip. Some people would call it liquid courage but at this point it was merely an addiction. Capping the flask the man pulled his legs up to sit cross-legged upon the brown’s back and wait for Isori and her dragon. Mentally the older rider went over what needed to be said. Didn’t necessarily mean it was going to be easy getting there. But Sel’n had been around for a long time. He knew things. Knew how to get what he wanted. Hell he had been a Wingleader at Fort. And a damn good one. Weyrlings were a bit different, but he was proud of his job. Thought he did a damn good job of it too. Heh. Even so he seemed to fail some of them. Her breaking the rules is not your fault at all. Do not think such things. Kaaoloth chided gently before he caught sight of the green on the horizon.
Directing a welcoming croon back to Aikelyth he arched his neck and waited for the female to approach. If anything could be said about the large dragon it was that he was quite fond of all the young ones under his care. He loved them all to almost distraction and wouldn’t hesitate to put himself in harms way to protect them either. He had done so once before. Thrown himself in front of dragon flame to protect Feyrianth and Trilaranth. He still bore the scars from that venture even if it had been turns ago. When the green ducked under his neck he rumbled affectionately and nuzzled along her back. The aborted lick to his muzzle was noted with amusement and the brown crooned gently to her. So I see my little one. Never mind that she wasn’t tiny anymore. She was still quite small in comparison to the near bronze sized brown. You seem quite chipper today. Any particular reason? Tilting his head he regarded her, eyes whirling in amused and placid shades.
For his part Sel’n looked down at Isori from his perch on Kaaoloth’s back. He gave her a small guarded smile and a nod. “Yes I did.” Turning back to his scrolls he wound them up tightly and banded them. “We need to have a talk my dear.” As he spoke the brownrider tucked the scrolls into his bag. After they were secured he slid off his dragon’s back and hit the grass with a small grunt. Walking over to Isori he gave her another smile. “I suppose before we begin I should ask you first.” His blue eyes searched hers for a moment. “Is there anything you would like to tell me Isori?” He’d give her a chance to spill first. It was only fair.

Aikelyth bounced a bit on her front end, wiggling all over before curling up against Kaaoloth's chest, flicking the end of her tail up over her own shoulders as she crooned happily. Do I need a reason to be chipper? I think today has been a good day! Nothing bad has happened, and that is good. she answered matter-of-factly.
Isori's smile faltered at Sel'n's manner. Something was up ... and it didn't look good. Surely she hadn't flunked a class! Her eyebrows started to creep upward a bit before she dragged them back downward again and just waited expectantly. Surely he'd say what he meant to say sooner or later. 'We need to have a talk's never went well, especially when that was said as an opener. Isori folded her hands together as he came down to her level and walked closer.
She met his gaze, but then blinked at the question. He needed to talk to her, but ... wanted to know if there was anything she wanted to say to him? That ... was odd. Unless maybe Aikelyth had alluded to them something about her need to talk to him? That would explain it.
I did no such thing. Aikelyth corrected. Which had Isori's stomach hitting her feet.
Fiddlesticks.
"Um ... actually ... I uh. I was hoping I could put off between classes?" Isori asked, uncertainly.

Shifting as she made herself comfortable Kaaoloth rumbled in amusement. Well when you put it that way I suppose no. You do not need so much of a reason. Right little positive thing wasn’t she? That was good. Hopefully she’d stay that way even after his had spoken to hers. Really Aikelyth didn’t seem like she had been mentally traumatized. But then sometimes things like that didn’t show so well all the time. And even if she herself had managed to escape any rift or perversion of the bond, that didn’t mean another dragon would. Yes Isori had to be punished. If only for the good of any other weyrling who came after her. Really you would think the threat of possible harm to your dragon would be off putting. What was one night of pleasure if it meant harming something that was bound mind, body, and soul to you? Neither Kaaoloth nor Sel’n understood this. Nor did they understand why even if Isori would risk her dragon the other party would allow it to happen either. It was frankly a bit upsetting. Kaaoloth nuzzled the green curled up near his chest. She was important to him, should not that same importance or even more be shown by her rider?
Sel’n’s expression simply stayed neutral as the emotions played across Isori’s face. Surely she was now wondering what was up and she sure seemed worried about it. As well she should be. The whole thing was a very serious matter. Nothing to joke around with or play at. Patient the Weyrlingmaster was as he waited for his student to get out what she wanted to say. She could have her moment to gather herself. The brownrider was a remarkably patient and easy going man when he had to be. Especially since he knew this particular topic couldn’t be easy for her. In fact her discomfort and pause with the issue only told him that she was avoiding it because she knew she was in the wrong. That would make this whole thing easier.
When Isori did finally speak Sel’n’s face remained impassive. Only one eyebrow twitched upwards slightly. “And why Isori would you hope to put off betweening lessons?” He knew why. There was no other reason. But he feigned ignorance, still giving her a chance to utter the words herself. More like practically forcing her too. “If you are afraid believe me everyone else is too and that’s not a suitable reason not to learn how to between.” Speak child. The real reason this time. His dark blue eyes fixed on hers. Waiting again for her to speak.

Aikelyth licked at Kaaloth's snout again, still missing the mark for actually licking the Brown. It was quite clear it was intentional however, and not a depth perception problem. But after that she fell still and silent, if leaning slightly against Kaaloth's chest with her shoulder as she watched the Riders talk. Clearly it was of great interest to her, enough so that she'd gone completely still. All of her wiggling had ceased completely as a rather serious looking expression settled on her young features.
Isori was concerned, but Aikelyth soothed her as well as she knew how. Everything would be okay. As long as they both survived to the next day, everything would be just fine. Even at the worst Sel'n might do, it was highly unlikely that they wouldn't survive it. So Aikelyth was perfectly okay with anything that might happen.
"Oh. Nonono. You misunderstand me, Master Sel'n. I'm not afraid, indeed I have looked forward to every lesson. I enjoy learning and ... and ... well." She trailed off, then sighed. "It's just that ... I have heard things. About what between does. And ... at the moment it's of enough concern to me that I don't wish to chance it. So I just ... I just want to put it off a bit. Not not do it, mind you. You see ..." Her gaze wandered off to the side, toward where Aikelyth's lovely green face was looking right back at her. After just a brief moment there, she looked up at Sel'n again. "I am pregnant, and I'd not like to take that risk."
And here was where he might get raging mad at her. A pregnant weyrling ... certainly not something she had looked to become. But she was, and she was aware that she had to own up to it. That or risk her own life, and possibly Aikelyth's too, on top of that of her babe should she attempt between in such a state. Given that certainty, she didn't really have much trouble in actually owning up to it. What did give her trouble was the unknown factor of how Sel'n would react.
Would he make her do the exercises anyway? Despite it? Isori hoped not.
Aikelyth crooned ever so softly before lowering her head to rest it on her own front feet as she, too, awaited the verdict of the request. She was highly aware of how important this was to Isori, and by proxy that made it important to her, too. Mine wants to keep her eggling. She told Kaaoloth.

Her continued aborted licking at his snout had the brown highly amused. Kaaoloth wasn’t sure what that gesture was supposed to be about but he didn’t mind it. Nor would he mind if she actually licked him but she didn’t seem to want to so he left it alone. Instead the brown just sprawled there as regally as one could with only three legs. He didn’t mind being all sprawled out like this really. It was the getting awkwardly to his feet that he hated. It was a good thing the male had such large wings and his tail to help him. They all helped to counterbalance him so he didn’t go crashing back to the earth. For now though he was quite content to lay there with his young charge.
Kaaoloth’s head turned so that he could watch the humans as well. He gave no comment to Aikelyth nor either of the two riders. Though he did wrap his mind gently around Sel’n’s buoying the inwardly drowning man constantly was a bit difficult lately but the fact that his was even up and moving around with the level of pain he was feeling was a small miracle in and of itself.
The Weyrlingmaster himself stayed impassively silent. His blue eyes fixed themselves on the face of the girl in front of him and nothing else. He waited patiently for Isori to speak from start to finish. Then she dropped what she probably thought was a huge and terrible revelation to him. When in all honesty he already knew and had indeed suspected. Still hearing the words come from the weyrling’s own mouth didn’t make him feel any better about the situation. When Isori finally went quiet Sel’n spoke up. Leaving just the smallest bit of a pause between them. “I see. I am quite disappointed in you Isori. You broke possibly the most important rule we have put in place for you weyrlings. Your actions and the actions of your partner could have well damaged your bond with your dragon, weakened it, caused it harm in ways you have not yet come across. There is a reason we bar you from activity like that. It has to do with the emotional strain you might put on the bond. You very well could have done irreparable harm to Aikelyth. Whether that happened or not with you does not mean that might not happen to another pair should they break the same rule. So I hope you understand that I have no choice but to punish you for your actions. There is a reason we do not allow pregnant women to stand and that is the same one. Extreme emotion to another person while your bond with your young dragon is still developing can have hazardous effect on the emotional health of your dragon and the bond in general.”
Whether Isori was following all of this or not he wasn’t certain. Nor did he know if she really gave two shits about it. If she didn’t well then Sel’n had serious doubts about her character. But that was neither here nor there. With a sigh he shook his head. “I’m not going to make you between. Nobody would. But you are hereby stripped of your weyrlinghood. You will not graduate with your class. You will not perform any of the activities or lessons that they do. In fact you will be given to the headwoman and you will do whatever work she asks for you until a time when you are too gravid to perform it. After the babe is born you may join the newest weyrling class and start all over again. Whether that will be Nitrath’s or Millieth’s next I do not know. But you are not to come to class anymore and I will inform Mae that she has another worker now.” Finishing the brownrider looked her in the eye. “Do you understand me? Are there any further questions about what I am telling you?” He wasn’t done with her yet. But he needed to know that she understood her punishment before he moved to the next topic.
When Aikelyth spoke again Kaaoloth’s head tilted and he looked down at the smaller green. With a soft croon he replied. Silly little one. Why would she not be allowed to keep it? No one would force her to get rid of it. Least of all mine. That was a silly thing for someone to think in the brown's opinion. He is however highly disappointed in her. Do you know who’s child it is? The sire of the baby? The brown was nothing if not curious. Plus it was information his wanted. So why not see if he could get it?

Isori had been afraid all along of what Sel'n might say. What Sel'n might do. But whatever she had expected, it wasn't this. Her features slowly fell as Sel'n spoke, but she managed to stay silent through the whole lecture and sentencing. Inwardly reeling, Isori wasn't sure what to do at all, or what to think. She was being relegated back to drudge status?! She wasn't going to be allowed any lessons at all? She had ... in effect ... flunked entirely??
It was not something she had been prepared for at all. She'd done everything in her power to excel in her studies and activities, and here he'd just taken it all away from her as if she'd never attended at all.
She was also pretty sure that trying to explain that it had been an accident ... probably wouldn't get her very far. So she held her tongue. She certainly hadn't had that planned, in mind, or intended when she'd gone to visit him, after all. It just... happened. But again ... Sel'n likely wouldn't understand that at all, she supposed. So she didn't even try to defend in that fashion. It wasn't worth the dignity.
She was pregnant, that was all there was to it apparently. The hows and whys didn't matter. Guilty, all she could do was stand there and not dissolve. Even if she wanted to. But even in this, she wasn't willing to give up the babe even if it would change anything. It was hers, and she would defend it.
"I understand." Isori answered levelly, glad she didn't have to say any more than that, lest her true roiling emotions burst through in her voice. That, was not something she wished to share with Sel'n.
Mine has feared it for a long time now, it seemed a valid concern. Aikelyth answered, wriggling unhappily for a moment as the punishment was leveled. It was upsetting ... she knew just how important excelling at lessons had been to hers ... and she, too, had worked quite hard to keep up with Isori's expectations. It was a blow to them both to have it all stripped away as pretty much wasted effort. She lifted her head and looked at Kaaoloth when he asked who the sire was, but she really only had one answer for the question; I was not awake at the time. Not that her memory went back that far anyway. The only reason Aikelyth remembered anything at all was because of the rather uncomfortable dreams she'd had that night before Futh had come and soothed her back to restful sleep.
Horrifying dreams.

Sel’n merely nodded as Isori clarified that she understood. Clearing his throat he then spoke again this time in a more gentle fashion. “I have one further question for you Isori. I would suggest you be honest about it? It will go far worse if you aren’t.” Trying to catch her gaze he paused before asking. “Who is the father of your baby? I’d like to know exactly who exactly is also responsible for this.” Because if it was the certain bluerider he was suspecting the man was in hot water. And in all reality if he was immature and untrustworthy enough that he couldn’t be trusted with young impressionable weyrlings he shouldn’t be teaching at all.
To be honest the brownrider wasn’t sure who else it could be anyway. From what he had seen at the few gatherings they had, M’kai had been the only one with her. And he had been quite close and touchy at times too. Sel’n hadn’t personally seen Isori hang around with anyone else, and the few riders he had questioned didn’t seem to have seen her spending a lot of her time with anyone else either. Would be nice to hear it for sure before he brought it to the council though.
Really? Kaaoloth questioned. Well then you can assure her that that was an extremely silly thing for her to think. No one at Selenitas would think of doing something like that. To the brown that just seemed ridiculous. The older dragon nuzzled the green cuddled up to him gently. Ah. I see. And yours has never spoken to you about who the sire is? Never thinks about him being a father to that baby? Kaaoloth found that hard to believe and he knew dragons couldn’t lie. (Except for that blue with the genetic abnormality.) So he was confident that if Aikelyth knew she would eventually have no choice but to tell him.

Isori sighed, and shifted her feet uncomfortably at the further questioning. "I ... I would really rather not divulge such information." She answered finally. "This is a rather personal matter to me, and I really ... don't like everyone getting all muddied up in my business. I realize everyone who rides thinks things like dragons are the be all and end all of our existences as Riders, but ... this is important to me." She certainly wasn't going to toss M'kai into hot water if she could help it, that was for sure. She loved him, and didn't want to cause him any additional troubles. He was already rather uncomfortable with the whole idea of her baby anyway.
Not that that was something she could help at all.
Aikelyth crooned softly and returned the nuzzling, but unhappy colors still swirled in her gaze as she watched the larger and older Brown. Mine does, but it is a secret. Mine made me swear to never tell. But Sorimine will be glad to know that her egg is safe. She adores it, you know. Talks to it sometimes. Aikelyth was very uncomfortable with being boxed into answers she had sworn to never utter. Answers that she sometimes forgot, sometimes remembered, but was always reminded to never breathe a word about. Always. It was important to remember that she was not to say something. The stress was starting to show in her colors, but for the moment she held still. Mine and I sometimes look forward to when we can see the hatchling. I wonder what color it will be? she mused, in that short attention span focus that she could still display despite being a very unusually intelligent and long-remembering green. She was, after all, still green.
