It was early in the morning, Rukbat had barely risen a candle mark ago and the temperature had not yet started to climb. The grasses of the clearing were wet with a dew and only a few things dared disturb the silence of the early morning. One of those things was a green and brown clad woman with a braided mane of fiery red hair. The Senior Weyrwoman was busy with pulling a daypack down from the harness of her dragon, going about it as quietly as possible but knowing that the clink of buckles and rustle of straps were almost painfully loud in the area they were in. To be entirely honest, Kaegan was almost excited beyond measure. It had been many years since she'd gone hiking so when a sudden desire to do so appeared she had jumped on it almost immediately. As if she had been afraid that it would simply disappear and never return. Of course, there had been a few things the woman had to take care of before she was given permission to do so. First, Millieth insisted on coming with her. Saying she would wait in a tree covered meadow in case something happened and Hers needed a swift ride back to the Weyr. And the second, was an escort. Given the fact that: a) she was a Weyrwoman in war time and b) there were wild felines running about, she was forced to take someone along with her.
It had been a difficult decision as to who she would bring. Kaegan wasn't going to ask a Bronzerider, one metallic was hard enough to hide properly so two would have been impossible. She couldn't bring a Green or a Blue with her, she didn't know very many of the Riders and many of them were rather young. So, that left Browns. Easy to hide and she knew quite a few Riders who rode that particular color. The Weyrwoman had gone through the list of names before settling on a Wingsecond. Emphemeraes G'tor of Ruskeath. She'd met him a few times and exchanged a couple of short conversations, the guy seemed nice enough. Kaegan had cornered him one day in the Dining Hall near lunch time with her proposition. He didn't outright refuse, which had been good enough for her. She'd found him a few days later to remind him of what to bring, and make sure he was still up for the challenge. So here they were, getting ready for a day trip into the mountains.
Flipping open her pack the Goldrider made sure her skins of water were tightly sealed before climbing down with the canvas bag slung over her shoulder. With a brown and green streaked kerchief she tied her bangs back and hid her hair from view. Kaegan 'tsked' as she fiddled with a few hairpins. She wore a well fitting, sleeveless brown tunic that was tucked into forest green trousers and boots of the same brown as her shirt. Kaegan also had a thin jacket that was dyed in a random pattern of greens and browns, though she doubted that it would ever be needed. Not with it being the very beginning of summer, therefore it was tied to the top of her pack. Still, it would help her if she needed to hide. Precautions, precautions. Shifting her pack so it was hanging off both of her shoulders, the Weyrwoman clipped herself in by buckling the strap that ran across her stomach and above her chest. Now she didn't have to worry about it accidentally coming off if she tripped. Double checking herself, including the two knives she had brought along (one was strapped to her thigh and the other tucked inside her right boot), Kaegan made sure she was satisfied before crossing the tree covered clearing to her hiking partner.
"All set to go then G'tor?" She planted a hand on her hip with a smile that betrayed her excitement. "I hope its not to early for you! But we have to get started before the heat starts to pick up, else we'll be stuck in the less forested areas with Rukbat beating down on us. I hope to be under some good cover before then." And although her real purpose to be out here was to have fun, she also had an alternate reason as well. Kaegan was on the hunt for Caves. She had been thinking about the War and the sorely lacking plans of evacuation. If there were caves in the mountain side, she'd mark them for further exploration. It would be a great if the Weyr could find a cave system big enough to house some of her people and the supplies they'll need in case of a mass exodus. So along with her water skins she carried some maps and mapping equipment.
Azaran, who had until that point been dozing with Dash in a harness bag, fluted and fluttered over to perch on His human's shoulder. He'd accompany them on their trip, while her Salamandyr stayed with Millieth. Dash could communicate with Azaran better than the Queen could, so they'd serve as a line of communication if for some reason neither of the humans could call their Dragons. Plus, the Firelizard just wanted to come with them. It wasn't every day he got to go exploring with his Human.
"Oh, also, did bring the food right?" All she had in her already packed bag, were nuts and dried fruits that were chalked with protein and calories. As well as a few small oranges. These were to be snacks for before and after lunch.
