His father was gone for a bit. And his father's weyrmate. Other children might have been given over to someone else to look after when they're 'parents' were gone, but not Miguel; the eight-turn-old was left to his own devices. Of course, Hoayamae still looked after him in the kitchens and he still worked at the infirmary, learning from E'rro, so it wasn't like he was all alone or anything. Mhir had been left with him until his father got back from buying things for Erilena's babies. Miguel wasn't sure what Erilena was to him. A cousin maybe? Dmitri was his cousin. And of course Father would go see Miguel's other cousin who lived in the Hold. Shei. Miguel remembered her. She wasn't very fun, even though he'd always been nice to her.
No, the little boy was more than happy to stay here, especially since Mhir was with him. He felt proud that his father trusted him enough to take care of the little salamandyr. (Mhir was very curious and often got himself into trouble. Miguel was still dripping wet from having to swim out to rescue him from his little leaf boat.) Fishing? Called fishing? the small thing was questioning him from his perch on top of Miguel's fishing rod. The boy had only just baited and cast. "Mhm," he half-hummed, bobbing his head in a clear yes. Fishing. Wrapping his tail about the rod, Mhir stretched down to wrap his forelegs around the fishing line, attempting to help guide it. Mhir help.
Miguel couldn't resist a small smile at the blue. So cute. He watched very carefully, too, just to make sure the creature didn't fall into the water again. At least, he watched very carefully until he heard someone approaching. The child looked up, eyes going to the nearby foliage and settling on the source of the noise warily. His hands tightened on the pole and he prepared to stand up. Then, before he could stop him, Mhir was suddenly flying on his overlarge wings for whatever was making the noise with a cheerful, Hiiiiii! Who there?

One never truly adapted in full to being nocturnal. In some ways, being a wherhandler was against human nature. People were simply not supposed to have their days backwards. That and the perpetual darkness of the Weyr had somehow messed up her sleeping schedule. Thus, she'd woken up early, risen Shrew and stepped out for a meal, leaving Emilisk in their room. The green still snoozed where she was, curled up quite comfortably. When she was done eating, Emiliah returned to her room but, unable to sleep, gently roused the drowsy wher. Emilisk was none too happy about it but understood the logic.
If one was awake while the other slept they'd run into the problems they'd had when the green was but a wherling. A pair did not work efficiently with one not functioning.
Unable to keep herself contained, Emiliah found a scarf to tie around Emilisk's eyes to protect them. She knew that the wher would be tempted to open them once they were outside. The light was fading and soon the woman could use the scarf for its intended purpose and not is McGuiver right now. Such was how Emi's thoughts were occupied until Shrew launched off of her shoulder. She'd been quiet until then, trilling as she flew. "Shrew?" the young woman asked after the lizard. Emilisk was confused but felt nothing wrong. Indeed, hers should calm down and relax. Take a deep breath? Emiliah did so. Following the flit she soon saw Miguel. "Hello," she greeted to him softly. Well, this was odd. Weren't children supposed to be watched? What was he doing all alone?
Emilisk, following Her's the way they'd been trained back at Selenitas walked out and sat down beside her. How silly she must look with her eyes covered but she couldn't see herself and could see anyone else so, as far as she knew, no one could see her. Perfect sense, clearly.

Phai... well, she wasn't exactly annoyed, but she was a little miffed. Auntie Mae had given her a basket full of dinner foods and sent her out to find Miguel. Phai didn't understand how this was her job - she wanted to stay in the kitchens with the other 'brats. She wasn't sure where Anna was (likely Mae had sent her on a similar mission, or the other girl had the evening off chores for lessons, who knew), and Phai really wanted to go find her friend and play with Xelos, but no. She had to find Miguel first and give him his dinner. Auntie Mae had even told Phaiden to stay and eat with Miguel... sometimes she suspected that Auntie Mae thought the quiet boy should talk more, and wanted Phai or Anna to fix that for her. Hmmph.
She'd hunted in all the places she and Anna would go to play before realizing that Miguel didn't spend time any of those places. Luckily, that was when she noticed a green Wher heading up towards the lake. Phai was a sucker for anything draconic, but Whers especially, and this green wasn't one she knew. Her father had introduced her to some of the whers, but he mostly knew the older ones. This one looked like it was probably younger, younger than Pidesk at least... but then again, Pidesk was one of the oldest Whers around, except for that old Brown.
By the time Phaiden reached the lake, the Wher and her handler had found... Miguel! "Oh," Phaiden said, hanging back a little, and hefting the basket up a bit, "Auntie Mae - Hoayamae - sent me to bring dinner for Miguel. Is some of it for you and your Wher, too?"

Chores were so dull. Annatolli skipped along the edge of the lake, basket in hand. She was supposed to visit the wherhandlers and bring them breakfast rolls, but it wasn't even dark yet. She loved seeing them, that wasn't the trouble. The wherhandlers were all lovely and a lot of them needed to smile more. It was just that handed out breakfast didn't give her more than a minute or two to be with them. No time for play or anything like that. Still, she would do it eventually, but surly she could take her time getting there when most of them were probably still sleeping.
It looked like she wouldn't be alone though! She could already see Phaiden and Miguel and was that one of the wherhandlers? Well now her job would be easy and she could have fun too! "Hello everyone!" Anna waved with a beaming smile. She ran over to meet them, nearly spilling the carefully packed rolls. "Oh are you having a picnic?" she asked excitedly. Phai did seem to have brought some food too. As long as she saved some for the other handlers, Anna didn't think Auntie Mae would mind if she shared some of the rolls as well. "Can I come too?"

It just so happened that the creature Mhir had launched himself for was Shrew. A firelizard. The baby 'mandyr turned neatly on his special wings (what, a 'mandyr capable of true flight?!) and clasped onto her back with a joyous croon to match hers. Lo, lo pretty, he greeted eagerly. Fly together? Fly high and fast! His tail coiled along her spine in a gesture that was very much like a carress.
Apparently Mhir's racket and the sound of the other voice had awoken Annabelle from her spot half-clinging to Miguel's collar. Her tail had been wrapped around his neck, a hind leg curled in his collar and she was dangling upside down. But now she awoke with a hiss and a flapping of wings, her tail tightening around his neck so as not to fall. How dare this human awaken her! "Shhh, she didn't mean to," Miguel commented softly, stroking beneath Annabelle's chin. The baby flit continued to glare with red-hued eyes at Emiliah, but she liked the attention of Hers enough to not launch an attack. At least right this moment.
He'd almost forgotten. "Hello," Miguel responded, a small, apologetic smile on his lips. "Belle is...cranky sometimes." The words were delivered quietly. He might have said something else, but at that moment Phai showed up. She looked a little nervous. She had dinner, though, and it was at that moment that he realized...well, he was pretty hungry too. "She can share mine," the boy offered, glancing a little uncertainly at Emiliah, but not wanting to be rude. Especially if that green turned out to be not so nice when Hers was upset.
Anna! Her Miguel was quite happy to see, that truth evident in the smile that brightened his face upon seeing her. She bounded up with all the exuberance of a puppy. Remembering that the firelizard had partially been named after her, he flushed a little, but he didn't let it stop him from greeting his friend properly. "Of course." He even gave her a quick little squeeze, releasing her a bit too quickly and sticking his hands in his pockets, the flush still high in his pale cheeks.
