Fussing. Quietly at first and then louder. Erilena bit back a soft groan as the sound woke her and then carefully disentangled herself from the now stirring Dmitri. “I’ve got her. Go back to sleep.” She murmured to the harper as she blinked to try and clear her head in the darkness. “Shhh. I’m coming. I’m coming.” The greenrider soothed. Dileina this time. Normally it was Emitre. Grabbing Dmitri’s shirt from the floor she slipped it over her head and made her way quickly to the bassinet to lift her tiny daughter out of it. “Shhh don’t wake Daddy or your brother.” Erilena whispered before glancing at Emitre to make sure he was still asleep. Confident that he was still sleeping soundly she tiptoed out of the room with the baby held to her chest.
Half shutting the door behind her, she uncovered the glow on the table in the main room and murmured to Dileina. “You can’t be hungry love. You’re not wet either. Just fussing to fuss?” They had been sick about a week ago but they should be fine now. Content that her daughter didn’t feel overly warm and was probably just randomly fussing she poked the fire back to life and rocked her on the couch for awhile before yawning. Shards she was never going to ever get uninterrupted sleep again was she?
“Mommy needs something to keep her awake. She’ll be just a minute.” Erilena murmured to her daughter laying the cooing baby on the rug in front of the small fire. For a moment she hesitated. She’d be just across the room though? And Harper was right there on the couch as well. The canine was remarkably good with the little ones. The greenrider trusted him at least. With one last backwards glance the woman moved to the counter and fiddled with the hot plate so she could warm some old klah. As she was adding sweetener to it she became aware of a small pulse in her mind. Shadow. Hmm. That was rather odd for this time of night.
Her brown flit was akin to having a stray dog. He distrusted her and everyone else and only really came around every once and awhile to be lightly oiled and fed that was it. Normally around sunset. She barely noted he was even attached to her most of the time really. Somehow tonight though the feeling he exuded was different. Faint and muddled, there was confusion and an underlying disquiet to it was well. Frowning she moved away from the hotplate. “Shadow?” The words were quiet, in that soothing tone she often used on the almost feral flit to soothe him a little. As she approached the couch she heard a low growl and she stepped around it in concern. It sounded like Harper was….The sight that met her eyes froze her in her tracks and caused fear to claw it’s icy way down her spine and constrict her chest. Oh Faranth, no.
Shadow was posed over Dileina, his eyes whirling in shades of vibrant crimson and yellow. Thick drool and mucus dripped from his maw as he looked down at the slightly squirming baby his head swaying back and forth over her like some demented cobra. Harper upon the couch had his fangs bared, his muscles tense as every fiber of him focused on the brown that was hovering over Dileina. This family. They were under his protection. The canine didn’t twitch though, beyond the snarling and low growl, instinctively realizing that any movement from him might cause the firelizard to react negatively towards the very baby he wanted to defend.
Erilena fought back the scream that wanted to emerge from her throat, afraid that the noise would cause the firelizard to attack as well. Instead she moved not a muscle and almost hesitantly focused on the conscious that was her brown. It was hard to find and even harder to understand. Flashes of intense emotion met her and they were only clear for a moment before they disappeared is if in a fog. She got one clear thought though and almost as soon as it came to her Shadow moved, a small shriek emerging from his jaws as his head shot for Dileina’s flailing arm. Erilena did scream then, even as a flash of vibrant gold hit the firelizard like an arrow. Dementia. As the two pets rolled across the floor in a ball of fury the greenrider quickly scooped up her baby and backed away, half crushing the screaming little girl against her breast, as she watched the tussle through her tears. Oh please. Don’t let Dementia get hurt…Please. Oh Faranth what was wrong with Shadow...
Harper leapt off the couch to stand by his mistress, his hair still raised and teeth still bared. Sometime during the battle she heard the bedroom door fly open but Erilena was already moving again. Aiming carefully as the brown and gold briefly disengaged she kicked her firelizard as hard as she could, biting back the sob that threatened to leave her throat as the action sent the flit tumbling. In the next moment Harper was upon Shadow and it was over. The greenrider felt the snap of the flits death against her mind like a slap. All over. Backing away as the canine shook the dead flit like a rag doll the silently crying woman crouched and outstretched a trembling hand for the gold to climb onto. “Mensy. Oh Mensy. Are you okay? Did he hurt you? Thank you. Thank you.” She murmured over and over to the small gold on her wrist even as Dmitri finally reached them and Erilena all but broke down into sobs.
