The 'leaning post' flicked a glance toward Darya, feigning a 'shocked' and 'hurt' look. "Did you just threaten my genitalia? I think you actually did." He shook his head sadly. "Ms Weyrlingmaster, I'm afraid you should probably go talk to Raebeli about this obsession with sex. It's beginning to get out of hand." Whatever further comments he might have had for the other bluerider, however, were lost in how quickly X'rx opened the door. Flicking a glance between the two, he quickly determined that Darya was suitably distracted and - slipped away. Most enjoyable duty discharged. Time to scram before the drama set in. He flashed a smile at X'rx, a small wave over Darya's shoulder, and made his exit.
"Inocenth mentioned to Eveyth that both of you were on your way. I said Dy was a good example, not that he lives in this area," X'rx added, with a touch of amusement. Didn't she know where her weyrlings lived? "You were closer to the Main Hall, by the way. Kids. And of course the occasional holdbred dragonrider. Weyrlings." A flicker of a wry smile as he moved to take the boiling water from the hearth. Yes, he'd already been making klah. The greenweyrling fought the desire to find a shirt to cover up the one scar on his arm, even though she was unlikely to notice something like that; insignificant to her, no doubt.
Coming back with two cups of klah, he handed one off to Darya. "You make it sound dirty or something. I'm nineteen. Weyrbred. You think you're the first I've ever mothed for? Eveyth's admittedly a lot more curious now than she was before, but she sifted through my memories and asked her questions within two months of her Hatching," he finished with some amusement. Rape would definitely be too strong a word for what had happened not so long before. Though he hadn't planned it, he had chosen to intercept her...X'rx had a lot more faith in himself and Eveyth than half the people Darya could have jumped.
The green in question had fallen asleep, as evidenced by her deep breathing echoing from the weyrledge. Had anyone thought to take a good look at her hide they would have noticed no lack in color. X'rx sat on the center of his coffee table, tucking his legs beneath him neatly - in order to give Darya room. "Apart from klah and peace of mind, was there anything else you needed, Weyrlingmaster?"

With one thing and another Darya never answered F’ur, or even noticed he’d slipped off until she was inside. Perversely she was slightly annoyed by this, mostly because that left no one to hide behind. Of course she was also relived that she wouldn’t have to put up with being heckled constantly, and mildly amused as well, just because F’ur was quite infuriating. Maybe she’d put tunnelsnakes in his underwear on general principles.
Without F’ur to be irritating and distracting Darya focused on X’rx, watching him move around with a peculiar half smile for the grace with which everything was done, or at least until she realised what her expression was and wiped it off her face, a rather pointless effort since the weyrling’s comment set her face into a worried frown. ‘You can bet if I’d known how close Bit was to Flying again I’d have locked myself in somewhere.’ A convulsive shudder ran over Darya’s body at the very thought, she’d really have liked to think herself above jumping children at least, but there were more and more youngsters with firelizards these days and Imp did make her very unpredictable. At least when Azrath chased there was a single, focused, target, made easier to deal with by Flightlust from their own dragon, and frankly Azrath wasn’t nearly as pushy as Imp.
Darya allowed her mouth to curve in wry smile as she accepted the cup. ‘I’m sorry to tell you this, but you look younger than you really are. Especially from my point of view.’ Darya tried to look honestly regretful but that ironic smile kept hovering around the edges of her expression. ‘And I forgot how curious young dragons are about what’s in your mind, it’s been a long while since there was anything in mine that Azrath doesn’t know as a matter of course. He treats my brains as his personal reference system.’ In the face of X’rx’s perfect calm and reason Darya was having a hard time sustaining her unease, and the small sounds of a sleeping dragon, so familiar to the bluerider that she didn’t consciously register them, were slowly chasing away her remaining doubts.
‘Mostly a little peace of mind.’ Darya admitted with a genuine smile. ‘I’m glad Eveyth’s not bothered, even if she did proposition Azrath, and that I don’t seem to have damaged you.’ To reinforce her words Darya wrapped her left hand around one of X’rx’s forearms in light grip, not that the damaged hand would sustain a better one. ‘I’m also glad someone was there to make sure I didn’t leap on one of those children or younger weyrlings. The holdbred riders should learn to deal with incidentals like that.’ Darya gave an inelegant snort to emphasise that point, then shook her head and looked X’rx in the eye. ‘No, seriously. Thank you for looking out them, and for looking out for me when my judgement’s impaired like that.’ The moment Darya could hold the weyrling’s gaze for passed, and both her eyes and her hand dropped back to her cup, which she looked into as if there might be answers contained within it, rather than a hot liquid.

X'rx had little doubt that Darya hadn't planned on...her flitter Rising? He'd known Imp was involved, but not that it was Darya's firelizard. It was pretty easy to distinguish between a rider in Flightlust and a rider under the influence of a salamandyr, at least to someone who had seen enough of both at Selenitas. In X'rx's opinion, the salamandyrs caused a lot more trouble. It didn't help that they seemed to like chasing or being caught by firelizards, or that the people bonded to Running ones tended to run around themselves. Lots of points of failure there. At any rate, X'rx didn't think anyone really wanted to think they'd hurt someone while out of control of themselves.
His nose wrinkled up into a boyish expression that did nothing whatsoever to help his case at Darya's comment on his age, the teenager lifting his own mug. "Hear that way too often," he murmured. Some of it was how he acted, but a lot of it was looks; he knew that. There were people who acted younger than him but couldn't believe how old he was...Erilena, for example. Cr'oph treated him like a kid brother. X'rx was so used to it by now he didn't even notice most of the time, but that didn't mean he liked to be reminded. A slow smile was returned to her, the dark eyes meeting hers again, just a touch of wryness twisting his lips. "Wish I could say I didn't know what you mean; couldn't keep anything from Eveyth if I tried. She just goes rooting like it's her own personal playground."
The greenweyrling's smile faded slightly at seeing a real smile on his Weyrlingmaster's face, and slipped away completely once the hand found his arm. He glanced down at it for a moment before meeting her eyes again, a flicker of confusion passing behind his gaze that only strengthened when she proceeded...to thank him. Strangely, even though he would acknowledge it as his own decision to anyone who asked (and it was, Darya certainly hadn't forced him into anything, even if she was definitely enthusiastic) X'rx had never really considered another option. It was the part of himself his father had hated so much, the way he didn't really even think about not going out onto the rocks to help a kid he didn't know from going over the falls, or intercepting someone in mandyr-lust so they didn't end up hurting someone else. He did it without thought and always had.
A light flush crept over the southern-tanned skin, his eyes skirting away just before Darya released his arm. "Don't thank me just yet," he responded quietly, and yes, a little awkwardly. "I've probably still gotten you in trouble, if anyone but that other bluerider saw." Which...he had little doubt they had. He hadn't quite been able to get her out of the public eye. Darya had been very enthusiastic. Darya so rarely said anything, well, nice. She was a harsh, blunt sort of person, which made something like this even more surreal. He brushed his hair behind an ear, looking at her contemplatively. "It's definitely not your fault; salamandyrs and dragons seem to always be catching people off-guard," he offered, hoping that would help. Seeing her looking that lost was perhaps stranger than the smile and thanks. Though not by much.
Then, in an attempt to draw a laugh or another smile, he snorted softly. "Besides, it wasn't that bad," he added playfully, tossing his head slightly. "I've had much worse. The gibberish is a little off-putting, though. You'll have to work on that for next time." Then, yes, he stuck his tongue out at her childishly, just to be certain she didn't take him too seriously.

‘Ah, you wait until you hit thirty lad, believe me looking a few turns younger than you are will seem like a great thing then.’ Darya gave a small smile in response to X’rx’s obvious dismay, it probably wasn’t great being nineteen and looking all of, oh maybe fifteen, but that meant it could only get better as he got older. Darya had to smile at the next comment too. Dragons could be very annoying indeed when they put their minds to it and of course it was impossible to think anything they didn’t at least vaguely pick up on when they were awake.
A shrug. ‘Well you may have done, but is it worse trouble than I might have gotten myselfand someone unwilling into? I doubt it.’ Darya considered the matter for a moment, her memories of the events leading up to her being sprawled naked by the river weren’t exactly the clearest, and she didn’t really want to examine them right now anyway. However one thing she was certain of was that she hadn’t been interested in being discreet at all, even without the added impetus of ‘mandyr Runlust she wasn’t the most subtle of people. ‘If I thought it was just F’ur I’d ask him to keep his mouth shut, but since I was bound to be far more interested in pinning you somewhere and getting your pants off than being circumspect abut it… well I’ll be surprised if some of that breeze isn’t from all the flapping tongues.’
For a moment Darya fell silent, looking into the bottom of her cup with a frown on her face. ‘Don’t take this as any kind of judgement on you, but this has got me thinking of giving up the weyrlingmaster’s position. If something like this happens again, especially while I’m teaching, I could end up mauling someone who’s entirely too young or traumatising a young dragon. It might be time to quit while I’m still ahead.’ Most of Darya’s rambling was her tying to order her own thoughts rather than really being directed at X’rx.
Darya both burst out laughing and blushed furiously. ‘Oh well thank you very much.’ She answered indignantly when she could speak again. ‘I’ll remember that next time I’m running around looking for someone to jump; don’t let Imp make you babble nonsense, it’s distracting.’ The bluerider shook her head, truly amused at the ridiculousness of the advice, even though the idea that she’d been talking mandyr nonsense, which was probably true now that she thought of it, added a whole new level of curl up and die mortification to the while experience.

While Darya was undoubtedly right about that, to a teenager not yet twenty, thirty seemed quite a ways away. He stirred slightly uneasily on the tabletop as the subject remained on Darya's mini-rampage and pinning him to various surfaces, X'rx's eyes drifting down to his klah, which he sipped at to prevent his giving into the urge to babble in a fit of nerves. She really didn't need a stream of details, or list of reasons, or anything that was likely to come out of his mouth just then. Besides...he was certain she'd tire of the topic on her own if he didn't - help it along. The greenweyrling wasn't particularly shy, per se, but Darya was still his Weyrlingmaster, which made the whole thing a touch more awkward than normal, that it did.
X'rx frowned slightly. He didn't find her words insulting at all, but...it seemed perhaps too dramatic a response to what had happened. "You're a good teacher. So is Azrath. And unless someone with power decides to ban people with salamandyrs from teaching weyrling lessons...well, I don't see how it would change much. It would be nice to finish with the same person we started with. For me if no one else," he concluded quietly. He offered her a faint smile, feeling awkward again. "Though I don't think anyone would blame you." He wouldn't. There would definitely be an awkwardness for him in lessons, even if it wasn't enough to interfere. So...
The laughter brought a broad smile to his face, eyes dancing with his own laughter, though silent. Oh, was she going red. The mischievous part of him was tempted to poke at her a little more, to see if that blush went any deeper, but he resisted. Barely. Or...sort of. He wasn't as bad as he could have been, anyway. "Seriously, you should," he responded, nodding with a very grave expression that didn't - quite - reach his eyes. "Nothing like toddler-level grammar coming from an adult mouth to make people want to run the other direction. Though, on second thought, that might actually be something you want to keep," he teased lightly.
The boy stood abruptly, going out onto his weyrledge and returning with a basket filled with still-warm twistbreads, left over from a late-morning breakfast he and his eldest sister had made together earlier. "I forgot...help me get rid of some of these? Bread just isn't any good once it cools off, and my sister and I were just a little too enthusiastic with the dough this morning," he commented warmly, the fondness for his sister clear in his voice. He should probably find a shirt here shortly, too. It made him uncomfortable, being in a state of undress where his scar was visible. A touch vain, the greenweyrling, but everyone had their faults, no?

‘I rather think someone just knew I have a hard time saying no to a direct question.’ Darya replied with a twisted smile, never content to just take a compliment politely. ‘I do remind you that half your classmates nearly passed out during the first lesson we had.’ Darya’s smile turned just a bit wicked at recalling the various reactions of her class when they’d been presented with piles of animal matter as part of their lesson. She did probably enjoy shocking people a little more than she should at times. ‘Azrath would miss teaching, he loves it, fool dragon.’ Mostly because he got a whole bunch of greens to play with, Darya thought cynically, though unfairly, Azrath did like his greens, but he also unfailing paid attention to the male dragons in the class (Chakraith was treated as large, blue, green). ‘Well I’m not going to rush off and quit this second, I’ll think it through, but right now I can see more reasons why I should than why I shouldn’t.’
Darya pressed her free hand to her eyes, as if she could shield herself from the idea that way. Unfortunately examples of Imp’s terrible grammar and the kind of nonsensical compliments he loved to bestow on any female nearby made their insidious way through her mind and made her blush even harder. ‘I’ll try and work on that. I wouldn’t want to completely horrify everyone.’ She managed to respond without sounding too horribly mortified.
Darya sipped at her klah and watched X’rx wander out to his weyrledge with mild curiosity. As the weyrling re-entered the room the scent of fresh bread pervaded the room, answering the question of why he’d gone out there in the first place, but raising the whole new question of why he was keeping food out there anyway. However Darya’s stomach, which seemed to be hotwired to her nose, decided it didn’t care where food came from and reminded her forcefully of how long it had been since she’d last eaten. Darya raised an eyebrow as she took a twist and nibbled on it, she hadn’t even know X’rx had any siblings, not that she’d made any kind of effort to find out much about her class.
‘Those are good, nothing like the ones I used to make with my sibs. We always used to burn ours.’ Darya commented, cooking did not run strong in her family either as a result of genetics or environment, and to this day she was almost incapable of cooking anything edible. Temporarily unable to think of anything else to say, or at least anything useful, Darya just nibbled the bread and kept quiet, grateful to have an excuse not to speak.

X'rx shook his head slightly at her demur, but otherwise didn't pursue that topic of conversation either. Darya may not have been chosen because they thought she was the best Selenitas could offer their weyrlings, and she may not have the most conventional methods of teaching, but X'rx thought that having something interesting and different was better, anyway. Besides, if the weyrlings couldn't handle a little bloody meat and entrails, they definitely wouldn't have been able to handle going with their dragons those first few live feedings. (Eveyth still preferred him to come with her instead of go alone.)
Having allowed himself an amused smile at Darya's expense out on the weyrledge at her deepening blush - rather than make her more uncomfortable by revealing it right then - X'rx was fully composed by the time he'd returned and she accepted the twistbread. Still smiling, yes, but this time in pleasure at the compliment and because she seemed to be enjoying the bread. The greenweyrling set the basket down, covering it, before moving off to find himself one of his handful of shirts, which he slipped over his slender shoulders, not bothering to lace up the neck. "I don't know how long my mom's been working the kitchens, but we all know how to bake, other than my youngest sister. My brother...he cooks well enough to rival most of the drudges who have been doing it for turns, but he chose to go into healing. He's at Southern now. I don't really cook. Was never good about staying in one spot all day, so they sent me out to work as often as not."
Sliding back onto his makeshift table seat, he fished out a twist, dunking it in the klah before taking a bite. "Your siblings. Did any of them Impress too? Only my youngest sister wants to, but I think she's leaning toward whers...she's something of an odd duck. Cute, but odd." Actually, X'rx was fairly certain he knew why Ximera was so odd, given she'd seen - if only briefly - the struggle that had ended with their father's death. Over three turns ago now. Some things just shouldn't be experienced too young, in X'rx's opinion. He continued to keep a close eye on her, just as their father had.
After a moment, he realized that Darya might just be sticking around out of...guilt or something similar, and he was making things more awkward by prolonging it. Even though the intention was to be reassuring (and he always thought food made people feel better), X'rx didn't want to make it any stranger than it already was. Actually, if she hadn't been the Weyrlingmaster, he probably would have just flirted with her shamelessly. But there were the rules, and she was technically supposed to enforce those, and much as he really wouldn't mind entertaining her when she was her and not a woman with the mind of a demanding salamandyr...not really an option. "I don't mean to be prying or boring you with needless chatter...feel free to stay or leave as you will. It's not a bother either way." A flash of a smile.
There. That should cover it.

Darya shrugged eloquently. ‘I don’t have the patience to stand around waiting for things to cook, I get distracted and only remember it when there’s smoke pouring out the oven, or the pan catches fire. Irrin wasn’t much better than me either, I think it was often only thanks to Foram that our baking even turned out edible at all.’ For a rarity Darya gave a smile with no hint of bitterness or mockery in it. ‘You know I think I was the only person ever to be banned from cooking on kitchen chores.’ She added.
Darya shook her head and wiped a few lingering crumbs of twistbread onto her trousers. ‘No, Foram went to train for a smith before I Impressed Azrath, used to hear from him occasionally when he was nearby but he went down to work at Lighttower Hold, and I haven’t heard much from him since. He doesn’t have a firelizard, he can’t stand the little beasties, so it’s letters only from him, and most of them read like he wrote them with a hammer too. Irrin, well she went off not long after Azrath hatched, fell in love with some cotholder, got married, and apparently got to the business of baby making with a vengeance.’ Darya’s voice had been affectionately tolerant of her brother’s faults when she described them but when it came to her sister’s choices Darya just sounded bewildered, she disliked children intensely and hated to have to depend on people, so Irrin’s life choices made no sense to her at all.
‘Whers is it?’ Darya mused. ‘Can’t say I know much about them, we didn’t really have much of a wher population until a few turns ago, so I can’t say I know much about them. I was totally dragon mad when I was the right age.’ Darya lifted one shoulder in an apologetic shrug. ‘I’m sorry I can’t be more help on that one.’ She doubted anyone could, people either Impressed or they didn’t, and although there were many theories on what influenced young dragons and what didn’t no one really knew what things drew two minds together, not even a dragon could explain it, Darya ought to know, she’d pressed Azrath about it enough times before giving up in disgust. Whatever it was, it was probably similar for whers too.
In the following moment of silence Darya leaned forward to snag another twist. ‘Now, don’t you think if you were boring or annoying me, I’d say so?’ Darya asked, somewhat rhetorically, with a raised eyebrow. ‘I’ll admit this conversation would be a good deal less strange if you weren’t one of my students,’ Darya displayed another twisted smile, if X’rx hadn’t been one of her students she’d have given him a little more to worry about than an awkward conversation, ‘but considering how disastrous it could have been, this hasn’t gone too badly. I could do with a bit of time alone to think things through though. So, you’re not boring me, but I am going to leave you in peace. Thank you for the Klah, the food, and the peace of mind.’ Darya suddenly chuckled as she stood to leave. ‘Azrath says to tell Eveyth she’s beautiful, but I’m sure you do that anyway.’ She added.
