Nephele was beginning to dislike the night shift. It wouldn't be very good for when she actually gave birth. Or for when she started showing in earnest. A couple more months and she'd start looking a bit like the whale Erilena had been. Not that she'd probably get quite as big as her friend unless by freaky coincidence she had twins as well. Highly unlikely since she didn't think her side or K'sel's side of the family had any twin genes. But all that is beside the point, or so she thought as she labelled a jar and put it up on a shelf. Stock work was oh so not fun.
A startled squeal out in the main part of the infirmary had Nephele moving out that way gladly. Well, gladly until she noticed the urbulent emotions of Sweetheart who she'd told to stay out there. She never brought her pets into the stock room. It was a disaster waiting to happen, she was sure of it. The greenrider frowned in concern, wondering what could get Sweetheart to make that sound and be so afraid. When she got out there she noticed the shape of another firelizard pinning her green down. It was testament to how frayed the bond between her and Charming had gotten lately that she didn't immediately recognize him.
"Charming?" She called out hesitantly when she did realize it was him. "Easy boy, I know you're sick so you just have to calm down. Let me help now." The brown had begun avoiding her the moment his symptoms had started to worsen beyond that of a typical cold. She'd brought it up to E'rro but there was little anyone could do when the brown kept flitting off before anyone but another flit could get close. She'd told her own firelizards to avoid any direct contact with him if they could which just made it even harder to try and catch him unless he wanted to be caught.
Apparently he had decided to catch Sweetheart instead. Nephele approached slowly, noting the whirling red eyes and the snot and mucus-y drool smeared all over the brown's mouth. He was pretty much just skin and bones at that point so he clearly hadn't been eating very much on his own. The brown hissed at her approach and the greenrider paused. One of her flitters holding the other hostage...such was her life she supposed. She raised her hands placatingly and watched as he leaned down to nuzzle Sweetheart's neck, crooning in affection and confusion.
Sweetheart wiggled a bit and then everything came crashing down. Charming took extreme offense to the green's apparent desire to be away from him and snapped his jaws shut around her throat. Nephele sprang forward as the brown started suckling at the rapidly dying green's wound. She used one hand the grab the back of his head and the other to flatten his body to the table without hurting him too much. Nephele called for help from one of the other Healers before the tears choked her voice. Sweetheart was impossible to save, she knew that, but perhaps she could still help Charming.
