Humans:
Name: Deirdre
Age: 17 (Born April 3000)
Gender: Female
Sexual Orientation: Identifies as Het but has secret crush on childhood friend
Location: Blossom Hold
Rank: Fieldhand/Future Candidate?
Mother: Deslenor (33)
Father: Risden (40)
Sibling(s): Reldis (Born 2999, Died 3005)
UPDATED: 6 November 2011
Physical Appearance: Delicate. Small at 5'2". Really, she looks something like a doll. Her face is cute rather than womanly and vaguely heart-shaped, her eyes a medium blue/green. Deirdre has straight blonde hair further bleached by sunlight that she wears at a length just past her shoulders...just long enough to put up intricately on the rare occasions when it's appropriate to. The teenager has modest but noticeable curves, even when she's wearing her more formless working clothes. Boots, gloves, pants and longsleeved shirts are worn in the vineyard, along with a wide-brimmed straw hat to keep the sun off her face. She burns and freckles terribly otherwise. Deirdre prefers dresses, skirts and cute tops, though, and loves Gathers so that she can get the chance to wear them. Most of the time, she doesn't.
Personality: If ever there was a quiet, sweet little girl, Deirdre personifies it. She tends to stick to the background and do whatever work that seems to need doing. Even with her friends that she's known the longest she isn't the most talkative of people, but she listens really well and has a gentle sort of humor when she feels comfortable with her present company. Deirdre tends to conform to whatever she feels others expect of her, which is why she is working in the vineyard right now and why she knows that soon she will be betrothed and joined to some nice hold boy. To those who don't possess her secrets, they think she wants that and is perfectly happy with the direction her life is going. Certainly, she never complains, and she isn't much of a dreamer, either. Dreams should be left for the nighttime.
That doesn't mean that she never saw her life going differently. She never really wanted to work out in the vineyard like a man underneath the beating sun. In her mind she'd be trained as a weaver, spinning delicate silks that would grace the forms of lovely ladies even across the ocean. That dream died with her brother and the fact that her birth had ruined her mother for any further children. But trying to be a son for her father was hard, and sometimes she'd imagine dragonriders coming to take her away to that mythical Weyr. This desire was even stronger than the one she'd given up in the first place, and only her best friend, the dolphineer Minlara, knew about that. And even Minlara doesn't know Deirdre's darkest, dirtiest secret; when she imagines herself sharing herself and her life with someone, the role always goes to Minlara herself. Sometimes Deirdre just doesn't know what is wrong with her.
History:
Sunshine and Butterflies [3000-3005]
There's no more beautiful place in all the world to be born than Blossom Hold. Deirdre, at least, has always thought so. She and Minlara were born on the same beautiful spring day in April (actually, it was miserable and rainy) and they were friends right from the start (if you considered biting and hairpulling friendly). They lived in cotholds right on the edge of a vineyard located just outside the main Hold, and even if things didn't start off as well as Deirdre likes to 'remember' them, her early childhood was full of stealing berries, running through fields, collecting flowers and swimming in lakes and rivers...basically giving her mother a mild heart attack daily. In the end, though, it was her older brother Reldis who met with tragedy, drowning in Blossom Lake. The dolphins tried to rescue him and even brought him ashore, but it was too late for the little six-turn-old.
A Childhood of Dreams [3005-3010]
Resden's death effected her parents more than little Deirdre. If anything, it just caused her to stay out with Minlara more (and to develop a healthy sense of caution that likely annoyed her best friend). When she wasn't helping her mother with chores, she was out getting into mischief - oftentimes trying to keep Minlara out of mischief with little success. One thing she always liked to do, though, was go into the Hold and see the women working on the beautiful silks, and imagining what it would be like to make something so luxurious that it would be worn by the most important people on Pern someday. The girl never told Minnie that she didn't like Blossom Lake, even was a bit afraid of it, and went with her friend to swim in it anyway...but at night she would have nightmares about it. Other than that, life was beautiful for the little goldenhaired girl. Even Thread didn't scare her when it began falling again in 3006. Though it was something new, she was still young enough that the sight of the dragons flaming Thread in the distance in flashes of color and bright metallic hues were just...pretty. Almost entrancing. The dragonriders had always been kind to Blossom, and in the stories she made up with Minlara when they played, all dragonriders were gallant men and women of impeccable character.
A Son? [3010-3012]
Deirdre was just about old enough now to start getting ready to enter a craft. They had family in the Hold, and her approaching Weaver apprenticeship was making the girl positively giddy. She'd be much closer to Minlara this way. (Her best friend had wanted to become a dolphineer for as long as Deirdre could remember, even if the thought made her nervous.) But then her father brought up her going to the vineyard to help out and learn the trade. When she brought up going to live with her uncle, he got suddenly angry and left the table. Later he just seemed tired and sad when he talked to her, and the little girl decided that maybe the vineyard wasn't so bad, if it would make him smile again. Thus when Minlara left for the Hall at the age of twelve, Deirdre stayed behind to work in the fields.
Fieldhand [3012-3015]
Day after day she worked in the vineyards, planting and caring for the vines and other fruit that they grew to splice the wine with. She didn't actually make it. She was no vintner. But she harvested the fruit, and once the long day was over she would sometimes go to see her friend Minlara. More often, she would be too tired to do much other than eat, bathe, and go straight to bed. Sometimes, while working in the fields, she'd see dragons flying in the skies, and her mind would soar with them to a place where life wasn't dirt and fruit and the beating sun. She heard of all the terrible things, the attacks, the siege, the poisonings that went on, but they always seemed okay. And the dragons were still flying. Then, one day in 3015, they received the news that northerners had taken over Selenitas, and Deirdre stopped dreaming of Weyrs altogether.
Seismic Shifts [3015-present]
It first happened when she was sixteen. She'd gone to see Minlara and saw her swimming nude in the lake as she'd seen her many times before, but this time it was different. Heat spread throughout her body and Deirdre fled. When asked the next day why she hadn't shown, she lied about feeling ill...and ever since that day Minlara crowds her thoughts when she lets her mind wander. The crush confused her. Still does. And it was silly, anyway, because her father arranged a joining for her shortly before her seventeenth turnday. She still hasn't met the man. Ever since Selenitas became Selenitas again, though, hidden away somewhere on the southern continent, Deirdre can't help but wildly think that if dragons should choose her and Minlara...they could be together there. The joining will be soon now. Of course, it's just a silly thought, like all her other silly thoughts; Minnie would never leave her dolphins, and Deirdre would be even more miserable somewhere else without Minnie than leading a life she doesn't want here at Blossom.
