UPDATED: May 31 2011
Physical Appearance: His eyes are a withdrawn darkness set into a face that approaches gaunt, the angles of jaw and cheeks, of brows, prominent. It is a long face, unruly black hair hanging down past his eyebrows in unkempt coils. A bit long on his neck to be considered truly short, it's still not longe enough to put up, and with the grey peppered scruff that often dusts cheeks and upper lip, he looks nothing if not shaggy. Thin lips are often set even thinner. At his hardest, there is still a touch of sadness that lingers as a ghost might, never far behind his eyes.
Personality: Ur'h is a quiet man. If he once knew how to socialize, that skill has long since been lost. Nevertheless, when he does choose to speak there is something calming about his voice, as if he were speaking to a runner to quiet her or perhaps as he might speak to a child afraid of the dark. That quality never leaves, no matter what he says. He could tell a man he was going to gut his wife and rape his kids, and it would still sound like reassurance. This tends to make things a bit surreal, considering Ur'h doesn't have the courtesy to lie or sugarcoat anything. He is matter-of-fact and wholly beyond deception; the man has never been able to hide anything from anyone, not if they're paying any attention.
It would be wrong to say that the brownrider is immoral. He does, however, have a very unwavering sense of what is and what should be. This includes unquestioning loyalty to whoever happens to be commanding him. When acting on his own, Ur'h is a just man. This must not be confused with merciful. The concept is an eye for an eye, and few better exemplify it. Take a child from someone and lose a child. Steal and return what was stolen to include what you own in equal value, and if you don't have enough, well, it can be taken out of your person. Truly just men are never well-loved. Expect everything you say to be taken literally, no matter how far-fetched, and don't expect to see him laughing anytime soon.
History:
Childhood - 2969 - 2977
The turn was 2969 when Uzbek and Mariah had their third son, Uriah. They worked a small patch of farmland as shareholders to a much wealthier farmer, a man who was nearly a lordling due to his close friendship with the Lordholder's son. Two sons and, at long last, a daughter later, it became apparent that Uriah was the runt of the family. Not unnaturally small, no, but he didn't measure up to his muleish siblings, and certainly not his father. Nevertheless, he worked just as hard as any boy his age might have. With so many mouths to feed, though, and so little land to work on, Uzbek arranged for the weakest of his sons to be sent to Vintner Hall in sprawling Benden Hold. Uriah left his family at the age of eight, riding into the Hold on the back of a drover's cart.
Vintner Hall - 2977-2989
Working as an apprentice vintner was hardly any less physically exhausting than working on a farm had been. He had no connections, and so he kept his head down and worked diligently for eight seemingly unending turns. Life got better upon walking the tables as a journeyman; he was finally free to make his own vintages. Uriah was decidedly uncreative, sticking with the more traditional tastes, but he did have a knack for flavoring the wines and was doing well enough for himself to request the hand of a wealthy merchant's daughter. She was just 12, and he only 16. Her dowry fed his family well. Uriah treated her much like a dumb pet, a runner, if you will. Though he was at least nice enough to hold off on breeding her for another two turns.
Weyrling? - 2989-2991
He'd only gone to present his wine, as was customary for those vintners who'd produced the top picks that turn. When Ykkith addressed him from the Sands, Ur'h was less than pleased; he didn't go down to claim his hatchling until it became clear the brown wouldn't do the sensible thing and pick someone else. Thus it was that, at the age of twenty, though he was already soundly established in his craft and joined, the father of a son not yet two, Ur'h began his turns of weyrlinghood at Benden Weyr. All of the other weyrlings were weyrbred, most of them a good deal younger than Ur'h. The man worked just as dilligently as he always had, and, if nothing else, it served to bring Ykkith and Ur'h closer together. The brown was his only friend in this odd world of loose morals and dragons. When the pair graduated in 2991, there was no war or threadfall to hold the attention of the dragonriders.
Tragedy - 2991-2994
It was a simple matter to get himself assigned to Benden Hold as a courier, and being part of Vintner Hall helped ease the matter of tithing to the Weyr. For three turns, Ur'h led a quiet life as a vintner, raising his sons, which now numbered two. At the end of the third turn, Ur'h received a guest into his home. His eldest brother 'gifted' him Zaria, writing of the death of Uzbek at the hands of Mariah. His sister was a beautiful woman with a strong spirit. He sensed the darkness in her, but the vintner found her company enjoyable, and never pressed for any details. His wife was far less receptive. The woman became jealous of this sister who spent hours conversing with her husband, imagining all manner of things that simply were not true. In a fit of anger at Ur'h, she killed his beloved sons, drowning them. The woman died at his hands, beaten to death. He would have claimed it was a crime of passion, but no, it was the cold extermination of a beast no longer fit to be owned. Zaria was terrified of him. With a heavy heart, Ur'h arranged for his sister to be joined to a friend of his, then left the Hall and the Hold for Benden Weyr.
A War's Beginning - 2996-3001
Two turns after leaving behind his craft with his dead family, Fort pitched both Weyrs into war. Ur'h and Ykkith marshalled with the rest of Benden to defend their lands and their riders. It was soon clear, however, that Fort's leadership was much stronger than Benden's. Ruatha was destroyed and scattered to the four winds. With each gutted cothold, each body of a young rider no more than a child, Ur'h's heart hardened against Fort until he hated them with a cold ferocity that would have made a wild wher seem like a kitten. Though he and Ykkith fought well, there was little hope. Until C'leon. Ur'h barely knew the young rider - was 31 himself when the bronzerider became Weyrleader - but C'leon kept Fort at bay.
C'leon's Regime - 3001-3012
The holdborn brownrider barely even noticed the changes coming over Benden Weyr. In all truth, it really was just becoming more like Benden Hold, which was home to him anyway. Further, whatever the man was doing, it was working. Thus it was that, even when C'leon closed off Baith's Flights to all but Morsrath and began the drug battery for the junior golds, Ur'h viewed him as something of a hero. It was understandable, really; without C'leon, Fort would have long since won the war and slaughtered or enslaved the Benden riders. The horror stories of the dragonless slave trade and Fort interrogations were only surpassed by the truth.
Wasteland - 3012-3015
As with everything, though, C'leon's time eventually came to an end. Ur'h and Ykkith returned from the siege on Selenitas, only to find a slaughter underway at Benden. The brownpair were not known to be radicals, so they were spared, and Ur'h kept his overwhelming hatred for the Fort usurpers and the disgust for the dragonriders who had sold out to the enemy close to his chest. He endured under the chafing rule of their new Fortian Weyrleader until, at long last, someone offered him another alternative. Ur'h and Ykkith headed south, where they were employed to conduct raids on food stores, the Benden refugees biding their time until they could make a definitive strike at the Weyr that had betrayed them all.
Selenitas - 3015-present
The invasion of Selenitas Weyr was merely the first step in the campaign against Benden. Ur'h and Ykkith accepted their role as one of the wingleaders for one of the less...conventional...wings created after the takeover. Apart from training and the Impression of one rather strange blue flit, however, life has remained uneventful. And even Ur'h is beginning to grow restless...
Dragons/Whers/Fire Lizards/Salamandyrs:
Name: Ykkith
Color: Brown
Age: 26
Physical Appearance: If a dragon could be carved, perfectly proportioned, from hardwood and then breathed into life, that would be Ykkith. Not only does he have that dark wood coloring, but his hide even has the appearance of wood grains mottling it. He is a picture in perfect averages, from size, to limb length and tail length, to wingspan. The brown's scars are numerous but mostly light, fading into his natural coloring but for one rather nasty one slashing down his left foreleg. No other marks or scars mar his hide.
Personality: Ykkith is an inherently matter-of-fact creature, employing that ever-interesting dragon logic to make sense of the world around him. He loves observing, and spends a good deal of his time simply watching and analyzing everything going on. Of most interest to him are people. Dragons he understands, but these odd bipeds to which all his brethren are married never cease to amuse - and confuse - him.
To further his studies into the ever-fascinating world of the human, Ykkith uses his own rider as a guinea pig and personal source of near limitless data. (It would probably be a good deal more effective if Ur'h had any sense of the inner workings of human beings, though.) These social experiments that Ykkith conducts can sometimes end rather interestingly, to be sure, and usually very much at Ur'h's expense. Ykkith also finds it immensely amusing that His doesn't seem to get his humor, and will spend hours on end confusing the man just to relieve boredom.
In work, he is as dilligent and exacting as his rider. A mistake or miscalculation from Ykkith is a rare thing indeed. He is courteous to other dragons, if somewhat cold to the males and the females that don't interest him, and for the most part seems to be content to spend his time alone people watching.
Name: Scatter
Species: Fire Lizard
Color: Blue CCCCFF 5A4FCF
Appearance: A small fire lizard, he'll only ever be the size of a large green at the most. His form is slim and delicate and decidedly feminine despite his color. Long, skinny limbs and a long, whip-like tail add to this appearance. His wings are narrow, leaving him with little endurance, but great speed and agility. One might think he would be graceful in the air, yet his nature leaves him quite unsteady, even clumsy in his movements.
In color, this blue is beautiful. Pale blue that appears nearly white from a distance covers him from nose to tail. A darker, purple blue runs from his chin, down his belly, to end between his hind legs. The two colors contrast sharply, but both are soft and pleasing to the eye.
Personality: Calm will never be a word to describe this blue. Ditzy and flaky more commonly come to mind. He finds it hard to focus on one thing for any length of time and can be easily distracted by anything new or interesting. He will try his best to help and obey his bonded in all things, but may often make mistakes for which he will apologize profusely. A bit insecure of his own abilities, he will look for approval and acceptance from others.
One odd thing about this fire lizard, is his skills at betweening. Or rather, his inability to stay in one location for very long. This blue loves to travel between and uses it as much as possible, even if it's just to go across the room. He'll even use it during Flights. Sometimes, however, his forgetfulness gets the better of him and he'll end up somewhere he didn't mean too, such as another room or even inside a jar! He has also been known to betweem by accident when he sneezes. Lucky for him, his instincts are good enough that he never ends up inside a wall!
